Hey Norm, I know you like rarities; we just had an American Avocet in Jamaica Bay WIldlife Refuge in Queens, NYC. This ain't Antelope Island so it's a big deal here. Nice Grouse by the way....
I think the ranch on Antelope Island acts like a migrant trap much like our urban parks do, it is an island of green and fresh water in the salt lake basin. Our urban parks are under continuous threat from...
Thanks so much Norm. I started birding in Central Park in a series of morning walks sponsored by NYC Audubon, it blew my mind. Now I live near Brooklyn's Prospect Park, another Olmstead/Vauz park and another "migrant trap." We get...
I love the Antelope Island causeway, Phalaropes to the north, Eared Grebes, Black-necked Stilts and Avocets to the south! And now flocking starlings too. Birds are indeed considered to be descended from a branch of the dinosaurs....
We have twitter accounts that we use only for birding (we don't care what each other eats for breakfast) so the word gets out quickly in our urban enviornment. Also, imagine the heartbreak of returning home getting on your internet...
Great bird Norm! What a strange habitat for the Harlequin. We get a few in the winter near rock jetties along the east coast. I see them at Pt. Lookout on Long Island. Also, what great fun to find a...
Religeous penis reminds me of this great comic from Jesus and Mo comparing religion to horse porn. http://www.jesusandmo.net/?s=horse+porn&key=transcript...
It's nice to see birds you don't regularly get to see. We more often see Black-crowned Night Herons and Great Blue Herons. So many birds so little time....
We have a couple of these guys. Took forever to ID them. First I thought they were a new duck cuz they hung around the little pond. Then I figured it couldn't be a duck cuz it was flying up and sitting in the big oak tree, besides it didn't LOOK like a duck. Don't know about secretive tho - our's fav perch is on the roof of the bunkhouse right out there in front of God and everybody. Stunning picture. Who'd a thunk you'd turn out to be such an amazing photog....
I'd love to see a picture of your Bunkhouse Heron. While true that most ducks don't roost in trees there are exceptions both Wood Ducks and Buffleheads roost in trees....
American Avocets are really cool birds, they are here damn near year round. In fact you can find them almost any time of the year though in the winter they are mostly gone. It's funny how one area's common bird is a rarity somewhere else. Last year we got a Dickcissel probably the seventh or eighth ever reported in Utah. I was telling another birder how exciting it was to see such a rare visitor. He was from the midwest and so was having a hard time understanding the excitement....
