Obama and the 2012 Presidential Run
...In light of that fact, ask yourself this: if you were a Democratic Party official, wouldn't you also ignore -- and, when desirable, step on -- the people who you know will support you no matter what you do to them? That's what a rational, calculating, self-interested, unprincipled Democratic politician should do: accommodate those factions which need accommodating (because their support is in question), while ignoring or scorning the ones whose support is not in question, either because they will never vote for them (the hard-core right) or will dutifully canvass, raise money, and vote for them no matter what (the Democratic base). Anyone who pledges unconditional, absolute fealty to a politician -- especially 18 months before an election -- is guaranteeing their own irrelevance.
• Thank you so much for your post.

  • Well, Every president does this. Obama is really just guilty of not throwing his base an effective bone in the way that bush handed out tax cuts.

Obama got us health-care, but did so half-heartedly he really hasn't gotten any credit.

Look at W Bush's Spending, Clinton's Free Trade, Bush Sr tax increases, Reagan's tax increases...

  • I have seen the future!

In 2012 Obama will run, and get reelected (barely) after the progressive base is convinced to vote despite a lackluster, right-of-center first term by threats of a Bachman Presidency.

During Obama's second term it will become obvious to even the dullest liberal that Obama's "appeal to the center" strategy is in fact nothing but the symptom of an ineffectual leader. His second term, like his first, will remain right of center, slowly killing the remaining idealism of the few aging hipsters who still have Obama stickers on their cars.

In 2016, a jaded progressive base will sit at home while the GOP defeats Hillary Clinton with another bland white man hailing from the monied classes.

Meanwhile, an aging Ron Paul will die alone and forgotten, while a slightly senile Ralph Nader wanders the streets muttering "I told you so" to himself again and again and again.

    You heard it here first!

  • most people blindly have loyalty and t is absolutely normal behavior . scientists have done studies where they took a group of people where all but one were in on the experiment . they asked a simple question like what is 5x5 and all of the participants who were in on it answered the same answer but it was wrong . the person who was not in on it answered correctly . after a few minutes of talking amoungst themselves 70% of the time the one correct person changed their answer to match the rest of the group .people by nature want to be the same as their peers and will do what their peers do . applied to politics , democrats will usually vote democrat , and republicans will usually vote republican no matter who the candidates are . the sad part about it is . no matter how bad the candidates are , or who people vote for , in the end who ever gets elected just does the same as their peers .
