A couple months ago, my wife's medical clinic went to EMR. The initial changeover was problem prone and required enormous amounts of time to complete, but the hope was in the end the change would speed things up (no more hunting down patient files, or calling somebody halfway around the world to type what was done that day), but two months later, she still isn't done with documentation until 8pm (the office closes at 5, and her last appointment is 4:30. On top of that, she (along with all the docs in the group) are only seeing 10-12 patients a day instead of the 20-22 they used to see.
I thought they were just having a hard time adjusting, but then she showed me how it is done. Holy cow! This software could have been produced by a high school computer club over the summer!
If law is going to require all Medical facilities to make this change, please invite someone like Google, or Sun to design it. I really don't see how a doctor's office can stay in business only seeing 10-12 patients a day.
It's long, but here's a doctor's perspective
