Stop War
there’s a song: tonight i’ve seen tomorrow, by dan. (2003)

The time has come to hear the truth about this tragic war.
It’s a dark day in our nation.

The warden led his prisoner from the classroom to his cell
He’s been down this path so many times before, he knows this briefing room so well
But nobody asks a question, since it’s something he can’t allow
And we pretend not to watch as the door clangs shut
And the light’s turned off for now.

Men do not easily assume the task of opposing their government’s policy.
We like war! We’re a warlike people!
Polls show Americans consistently oppose war.

I almost cried this morning when I read what some call news
That self-serving poetry could force this crowd to choose
To join us, we who seek to stop this violence in our name
The kids whose lives are ended are not people in this game.
I think that I need to act this time, I think that I’ve understood
Because tonight I’ve seen tomorrow
And tomorrow don’t look good.

Our only hope is to recapture that revolutionary spirit.
There comes a time when silence is betrayal.
The truth must be told.
Take a stand!

The liberals apologize and re-recite their lines
Then detain us without charges because idealism’s a crime.
These doves have grown so large and strong they’re blocking out the sun
These days the doves are those who kill for wealth instead of fun.
They’re edged on by the weapons men who own the news and form the minds
Tonight I’ve looked back from tomorrow
And we were crossing all the lines.

There are those who seek to equate dissent with disloyalty.
I’m not a good American because I like to form my own opinions.
Attrocities carried out... carried out with the support of George Bush
The press generally won’t tell us these things.

I’ve told you and I’ve told you that my will to fight’s still there
And I would bury myself at our victims’ feet to avoid their stare
But you look at me and I look at them and then I try the next locked door
And my head’s on the block, and my back’s to the wall
And my heart’s in pieces on the floor.
The bombs could fall tomorrow, can’t we find something more to do
Because tonight I’ve seen the enemy
And it’s the warden and me and you.

We’re moving down a one-way road that can lead to national disaster.
Just two hours ago, attacks began on targets in Baghdad.

Well you know I cringed when I heard jets roaring overhead last night
The saviours of the world were coming, I could sense that familiar fright
The anchor that’s dropped to save you should not be weighing you down with fear
Because this prison’s here, and the warden wants to take all that we hold dear.
They need to stop assaulting us, can’t they find a little less to give
Because tonight I’ve it coming
And we don’t have long to live.
Tonight I’ve seen them coming
And...

Now they languish under our bombs, and consider us the real enemy.
They see the children degraded by our soldiers as they beg for food.
We have destroyed their land and their crops.
This is the road our nation has taken.
It is time for all people of conscience to take a stand, to call upon America,
To come back home.
