Links With Your Coffee - Thursday

And just when you thought you wouldn't see another link I return from Reno where Chris and I played in the Western States Chess Tournament. I played my mediocre best in the A section and only salvaged a disaster by winning my final game in good style. Chris on the other hand was on fire winning five of six in the B section and tying for first in his class and bringing home $600.00 for his efforts. Between rounds I took him birding, it was his first time. I also tortured him on the way to the tournament and the way home. He did seem to enjoy it and now has 37 species on his life list. We both enjoyed seeing the Steller's Jays at Oxbow Park in Reno. A wonderful spot to bird or just to take a nice stroll between rounds of a chess tournament. And on the way home at a picnic area near the Rye Patch Dam we saw a Juniper Titmouse. And now a few links with your coffee. Constipation Myths and Facts Houston: video of Dawkins award to Hitchens Cell Phones and Cancer - Update Research continues into the question of whether or not cell phone use is associated with an increased risk of brain cancer. The latest epidemiological study, a Danish study of 358 thousand cell phone subscribers, reassuringly shows no correlation. This man's reasoning is FAULTLESS...

Harlequin Duck

Gail and I along with Bryant Olsen were birding the Antelope Island Causeway when we spotted this Harlequin Duck. I immediately sent an email to the local birdlists. The Harlequin is extremely rare in Utah, and so the interest would be high. The twitchers would start arriving within an hour or two. Gail and I just couldn't resist going out for another look at the Harlequin. Here is some video of it preening. Here is a report from a local Utah birder who was probably the first to arrive at the causeway after I submitted the report....

Not a Backyard Bird Yet

But I hold out hope I'll soon get a visit from this beauty. This is the Western Tanager it was the the Great Salt Lake Festival bird this year, though during the festival it made itself rare, I believe no one had even seen one until the second day of the festival. Now they are everywhere, well not in my backyard yet, but most everywhere else. We birded the Provo Airport Dike over the holiday weekend and saw hundreds of them. Today Gail and I birded Goshen Canyon looking for a Yellow-breasted Chat, we found one and will now add it to our life bird list, but I got a photo of a Western Tanager that really highlights what a beautiful bird it is and wanted to share so here you go first the Chat, and then the Tanager....

Links With Your Coffee - Wednesday

Sorry about the lack of posts, fortunately Red has been keeping you occupied with some interesting items. I've been at the Great Salt Lake Bird Festival and spending my time birding events such as the Marathon Birding - A Mini Big Day. Hi! In three days you will all be dead Good news for you! All worries, over soon. All concerns laid to rest. Everything transformed in a white-hot eyeblink of OMG WTF into a lukewarm puddlepool of odious harp music, angel squeals and tepid moral pudding. I know, right? Finally! Mooney snatches victory from jaws of defeat Why Worry? It’s Good for You In Japan Reactor Failings, Danger Signs for the U.S. TOKYO — Emergency vents that American officials have said would prevent devastating hydrogen explosions at nuclear plants in the United States were put to the test in Japan — and failed to work, according to experts and officials with the company that operates the crippled Fukushima Daiichi plant. Weekly Ezine for Democrats Sexual Preference Chemical A new glimpse at the earliest Americans Peregrine Falcon - The Perfect Predator Speaking of birds I've been experimenting with digiscoping, that is taking pictures through a spotting scope with a point and shoot camera. Here is one of an Eurasian Wigeon I took yesterday at Farmington Bay WMA. Taking pictures this way is like using a super telephoto lens on a DSLR this one is equivalent to a 1500mm lens on a DSLR. Why digiscope, a 600mm lens for my Nikon 300S would cost nearly $10,000 a point and shoot camera and a scope considerably less than that. The bird was approximately 85 meters away....
