Jeebus, how oblivious can Leakey get? Is it not abundantly clear that if someone is denying evolution by now (and even by most of last century), they're ignorant and either can already now get educated into accepting it, or will never want to accept it despite of any current or future evidence?

I see no reason why you shouldn't go through your life thinking if you're a good citizen, you'll get a better future in the afterlife.

I'm scared of where the "being a good citizen" rules come from!

OK Andyo, you beat me to it! It is clear to me that all the evidence I have seen (and experienced personally with various door-to-door religious salespersons) tells me that if a person is really religious then they are, ipso facto, capable of denying logic. More likely they are INcapable of seeing the logic of an argument against their view.

WEIT has had a few posts on Pentecostal snake handlers (e.g., see here and posts linked therein). Coincidentally, the first post was followed by the death of (another) snake handler (c.f. link above). Does Richard Leakey think that if we just knew a little bit more about rattlesnake poison, these loonies would stop handling snakes?

"If you tell me, well, people really need a faith ... I understand that," he said."

Holy, miss the point, batman.

Leakey obviously has no opinion research background.

Education and good storytelling are the only tools that really combat mythology. Accepting some mythology is counter productive and libraries full of evidence have never really educated the world on their own.

I am going to go look at my thermometer, I am sure that observation will tip the balance and Global warming skeptics will finally all believe Obama wasn't born in Kenya as part of the 9/11 plot to bring down building 7.
