Pulling bad science apart is the best teaching gimmick I know for explaining how good science works.

Re: I thought that was metaphorical.

catholics get out of it easily. To them everything is metaphorical. Except for the stuff with the big words which people don't usually bother trying to figure out (see: transubstantiation).

When my brothers and I were kids, the nuns never told us the crucifixion and the resurrection were metaphorical (they never talked about the resurrection of the rest of the zombies who Matthew says got up to celebrate the first Easter).

I could have said it better. Everything that's "obviously" stupid even for new testament standards is metaphorical. Of course, virgin births and resurrections are pretty well within those standards.

The best teaching gimmick I've seen in a long time is this one:

Black Death ("Hollaback Girl" by Gwen Stefani)

Fair warning. If you listen to it, you too will be singing "fleas on rats...fleas on rats..."
