  • Reading the Godless Constitution

I'm a big fan of the Constitution and I'm all for reading it -- publicly or privately, silently or aloud. If almost anyone else were proposing this stunt, I'd say it couldn't hurt. But I pay attention, and after years of seeing this lot disrespecting national symbols and institutions by reducing them to tribalist slogans and playground taunts I don't relish the idea of these idiots doing the same to the Constitution. I don't want to see it distorted and disrespected the way the John Birchers of the tea party movement treat the American flag, the national anthem, the names and memories of the founders and every other symbol they can usurp for use as a culture-war weapon while failing utterly to comprehend its meaning.

  • Racists Totally Freak Out Over Idris Elba Playing Norse God in 'Thor'

Did you know that the totally made-up-by-medieval-drunks gods of Norse mythology were all white? Literally none of them were African. We didn't know that, but thanks to the prodigious efforts of the Council of Conservative Citizens and their friends at Boycott-Thor.com, the truth has been revealed: Heimdall, Sentry of Asgard, was white and Idris Elba, the English actor hired to portray Heimdall in Marvel Studios' Thor, is black! BLACK!

RE: Detroit in Ruins

In Spain you can't tear down a doghouse if it has any sort of historic value which is why it is so beautiful here. How can we allow our cultural heritage to crumble before our eyes as in these terrifying photos?

But taxes are low and that's all that fucking matters, right?

P.S. Norm, can you allow comments via blogger/Google? Typepad or whatever you have here sucks.

It is a travesty, but stopping it would be socialism and Americans won't stand for that.

Actually, Americans are more socialist than you might think. It's just that the supposedly liberal media doesn't want you to know it.

Our Country isn't governed by what people think, its governed by what people feel.

Love the links BTW

The Detroit photos are a bummer, but the city was pulled down by its focus on one industry when it became motor city. The odd thing about Detroit is that many people seem to inhabit it; people work there, but tend to live in Ann Arbor and drive in. (OK, so I missed some inhabitants last time I was there, but honestly, I didn't come across any downtown neighborhoods). I just hope King's bookstore is still around.

Those are the white people.

But I do believe that the populaiton loss has been something like 60% in the last 10 years.

Those are the white people.

I'm assuming you mean those who live in An Arbor. Arborites aren't connected by race but by income.

The article on fracking depresses me somewhat - very sad for Pennsylvania (where I have friends), but I'm also thinking of kith and kin who live in Maryland and Baltimore. Ugh.

And Marvel's declared war on Norse mythology! Stop the presses! Maybe this will supplant the was on Christmas - for, let's say, 10 months.

Npr's On Point had a decent show on the reading of the constitution.

I wonder how many Republicans will have stayed awake long enough to finally learn about the document?

Lets see if they read all the amendments.

Holding my breath - ready? Start counting!

"the totally made-up-by-medieval-drunks gods of Norse mythology" - not quite. they've been around a bit longer than that
