Some good news

Reversing a longstanding policy, the federal government said on Friday that human and other genes should not be eligible for patents. The new position could have a huge impact on medicine and on the biotechnology industry.

"human and other genes should not be eligible for patents."

Talk about restoring Sanity!!!

Wow!

(wizards of warning:)

Glad to hear that last spring's ruling on gene patents is having a ripple effect. I'm expecting appeal after appeal though. The argument that patenting human genes actually is a hindrance to research is valid; we'll see how strong future courts consider that argument.

The argument that patenting genes is a hindrance to research is a strong one. The idea that the genes are public domain but that patents should be issued on methods to manipulate them (for example, to create herbicide resistant crops or novel medical treatments) seems obvious.

Is there any hope remaining that the jurists will remove themselves from corporate influence and serve as truth seekers to help get the matter sorted out?

A little - probably as much or more as the judges on SCOTUS.
