I agree with this so much - mostly from the spiritual and philosophical standing. Too bad that Fry includes Mozart in the patronage ramble, though. Mozart never did have a steady gig with a royal patron like Joseph Haydn and those before them. Mozart wanted to work for the court in Mannheim, but Wolfie was somewhat of a flake (there have been guesses that he was a touretter). He had sponsors here and there, but nothing steady. To some degree Beethoven took that as a cue and avoided working for a single royal patron, but he gladly took commissions from dukes and the like. Now patrons are split among colleges and universities, symphony and opera companies, and grant givers.
