Coffee Cup

Here's another case where the Obama administration has taken an appalling position in front of the Supreme Court -- but this time, the entire court, including the conservatives, rejected their clearly unjust argument. The case is Carachuri-Rosendo v. Holder. The Obama administration argued that a permanent resident alien living in the US could be deported solely for being caught with a joint and an anxiety pill (yes, one of each).

For the last three years, I.B.M. scientists have been developing what they expect will be the world’s most advanced “question answering” machine, able to understand a question posed in everyday human elocution — “natural language,” as computer scientists call it — and respond with a precise, factual answer.

The remains of chess champion Bobby Fischer are to be exhumed in order to settle a paternity claim, an Icelandic court has ruled.

Three men who spent nearly a decade in prison on rape charges were freed after an acupuncturist determined that they were virgins, a police official says.

Sorry Norm, your first item has a broken link. Page not found - /1gm/Language%20sneaks%20up%20on%20you

Thanks for the heads up. When I added that link this morning I thought, I'll bet pedantsareus comments on this. I was right, but for the wrong reason.

Having had a (somewhat fitful) night's sleep I have returned to the link. Thanks Norm. I have to admit (but without pride) that I have read JEM's column several times recently, even taking the trouble to comment on occasion. My problem is that I find it concerning that someone will pontificate so seriously on the Use of English when he is, in fact, not a native English speaker.

Love the chess puzzle.. is there an 'official' answer to it? I would have to assume that White wins, though. I feel like giving this problem to Big Blue and seeing if it pulls a WarGames.

Sure it's checkmate.

I wonder how many Supreme Court Justices are going to show up at the State of the Union next January. That'd be a great betting pool. I'm betting 3.

So, the ones he appointed... plus?

I like that conservatives hatred Obama causes them to protect the rights of immigrants.

Hate is a great motivator.

You really think that's why the justices voted the way they did?
