  • In Health Bill, Obama Attacks Wealth Inequality
For all the political and economic uncertainties about health reform, at least one thing seems clear: The bill that President Obama signed on Tuesday is the federal government’s biggest attack on economic inequality since inequality began rising more than three decades ago.

  • Placebo Effects Revisited
    Conclusion:

Existing evidence strongly suggests that placebo effects are mostly comprised of bias in reporting and observation and non-specific effects. There is no measurable physiological benefit from placebo interventions for any objective outcome. There is a measured benefit for some subjective outcomes (mostly pain, nausea, asthma, and phobias), but the wide variation in effect size suggests this is due to trial design (and therefore bias) rather than a real effect.

Comments

The PHARMA lobby is trying to use this lame placebo effect as a way to justify the fact that their drug testing in no way actually tests the drugs they are pedaling to us.

Placebos do not work, and drugs are not tested against other drugs, they are tested against placebos. This needs to change. Drugs need to show that they work for what they are prescribed for, and that they work better than drugs already on the market.

In this case, placebos are used for the control group (the portion of the test population that does not receive actual medication). This is exactly how they test drugs, to see how they are different from 'doing nothing'. So bob, I guess I'm saying I think you are wrong.

I don't think there is a better way, although I would say in the case of willing terminal patients, placebos are bad karma and perhaps a waste of time.

Placebos do not work, and drugs are not tested against other drugs, they are tested against placebos. This needs to change.

I don't think you fully understand what placebo is and/or why they use it.

Drugs need to show that they work for what they are prescribed for,

That's what properly done double blind trials (of which a placebo group is essential) do.

and that they work better than drugs already on the market.

What makes you think they don't do other tests for this?
