God's Word

Great Cartoons from the Current Issue of The New Yorker

Or germ theory. Or the fact that the Earth is a sphere that orbits the Sun. Or the ideas that rape and child abuse are totally not cool.

What about the nuclear bomb and germ warfare? the two things that have come the closest to wiping humanity from the face of the earth.

Yeah, where's the "Thou shalt not purify large amounts of fissionable materials for the purpose of creating uncontrolled nuclear chain reactions"?

Levitius 13 covers germ theory pretty well.

Round earth Isiah 40:22 "He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in."

Earth is in space: Job 26:7 "He spreads out the northern [skies] over empty space; he suspends the earth over nothing."

Rape is bad: Exodus 20:14 "You shall not commit adultery"

Child abuse is bad: Exodus 22:22 "Do not take advantage of a widow or an orphan. 23 If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry. 24 My anger will be aroused, and I will kill you with the sword; your wives will become widows and your children fatherless."

Sometimes you come dangerously close to trolling, my friend. I mean, how do you expect me to respond to how far you're stretching those passages? You figure the obvious vagueness, and lack of specificity, and use of metaphor in those passages leaves you enough wiggle-room to argue semantics until I get bored? (I've never seen that before when scripture comes up in an argument.)

I hope you're just being contrarian for the sake of it.

And I have to say, maybe the definition of "adultery" has changed over the years but according to, it means "voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and someone other than his or her lawful spouse". Or let me guess: everyone has been translating that part of the Bible wrong for the past few hundred years.

And the "don't take advantage of widows and orphans" bit doesn't come close to dispelling the notion that the Bible speaks of women and children as property that men can treat however they wish.

Oh, and I looked up Leviticus 13, and all it basically says is "some skin diseases are infectious; see your local priest for more information". Uh huh. Because ostracizing lepers is totally the basis of modern medicine.

Give me a break.

Dangerously close? I thought I passed that threshold years ago.

Well, I was being charitable. ;)
