Oldskool New Atheism

Atheist Media Blog posted this gem. Reminds us that when Atheism is called "New" its not because we are saying anything different than countless others before us. It's that so many have wanted to delude themselves that dissent has not existed and when it has it was quiet and private.

"The word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weakness, the Bible a collection of honorable, but still purely primitive, legends which are nevertheless pretty childish."
  Albert Einstein

Great clip, Norm. Sometimes the dated quotes on a topic are the most astute ones. I wish we had more public intellectuals like Russell alive today.

Actually, this one is me. But thanks, it is refreshing to hear someone talk about their rejection of faith based thinking in such a matter of fact way.

He just looked at it, and saw that the claims had no basis in reality, so why worry about that any further.

Hmm. It would be nice if the name of the poster were more obvious...

Tis in the lower right hand corner. Tricky because Norm often posts on religion and philosophy which is Reed's orbit.

Thanks for this. What a human being, what a thinker. My first intellectual hero.

Good post, Reed.

It's funny, a friend of mine and i who are atheists were speaking with another friend who is Christian. We arrived at our philosophies from the opposite direction - I 1st mentioned friend were raised Christian and left the faith and the latter had to be brought up non-religious (in China) but his entire family became Christian after Mao died. He was so surprised that people would go the other direction, given his beliefs. I don't think this video would make him consider changing back, but it might help him understand why others would leave faith.

i continue to feel strongly that it's much more fun to be a heretic than an atheist. but russel keeps to the first commandment of heresy in spite of his somewhat boring atheism: be adorable. gotta love the guy.

nope, sorry, andyo. it's about fun, really. because the TRUTH is we all suck and deserve to die (which we will).

also, "it's not about fun, it's about the truth" is one of the fundies favorite arguments. it's almost a complete summation of the catholic faith, for instance.

just find a "truth" that's impossible to explain to your average joe (the trinity, say, or quantum mechanics or global warming) and you're on your way to religion. but even atheists can understand fun. or so they claim. :)

as far as your "house" clip, any house fan will tell you house only ever does anything for fun. he wants to solve the puzzle, he doesn't care who gets hurt even if it's him. that's fun. "solving the puzzle" doesn't have anything to do with "truth" because there are an infinite # of puzzles and their solutions are often contradictory. some people think it's fun to design puzzles, and some people like solving them. and others think puzzles distract them from the important things, like the big waves off the kona coast. that's just how it is. it's the "truth".

it's not my fault you never got to see a guy/gal surf a wave that was physically impossible to surf.

philosophy 101 is in the house.

Just got around to seeing this one. It's perfect. Reminds me a lot of one of my top favorite movies, Woody Allen's Crimes and Misdemeanors, where Allen's character shows clips of a similar guy.

Religious people, most of them think that it's a virtuous act to tell lies about the deathbeds of agnostics and such.

Oh these young people and their New Atheism fad.
