  • 5 > 4, but 59 < 41
Fifty-nine senators, representing (as explained here) some 63 percent of the American public, accompanied by a large House majority and a president recently elected with 70 million votes, cannot enact changes in the nation's health-care system that have been debated for decades. A 59-41 margin is not enough for a change of this magnitude.

  • Suffering and the vain quest for significance
Question: Many have criticized Pat Robertson's suggestion that the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti was the work of the devil or a form of divine punishment. But if one believes God is good and intervenes in the world, why does God allow innocents to suffer? Why does God allow Haiti to suffer so much? What is the best scriptural text or explanation of that problem you've ever read?

Just two comments from across the pond:

  1. "In a Democracy, the people get the government they deserve" - Alexis de Tocqueville

  2. James Fallows (who went to Harvard and Oxford) says "Everyone on Earth would like to imitate America's universities."

I don't think so! I can't imagine Oxford, the Sorbonne, Trinity College, St Andrew's, Heidelberg, Zurich .... I don't think I need to go on.

that's funny i was thinking the same thing, but in reference to this article:

to wit: oppenheimer claims this west bank college doesn't deserve the name because of where it's situated- because he claims the academic tradition involves "liberalism, tolerance" and blah blah blah. i was just thinking he doesn't know much about the academic tradition or european universities, for that matter.
