  • 'Healthy' yogurt advert banned (tip to Pedantsareus
A TV advert which asserted that Actimel yogurt supported children's natural defences against disease has been banned by the advertising watchdog.
  • Bill Maher vs. the Flu Vaccine

Bill Maher continues to get excoriated in the press, and rightly so.

  • Abolish Women's Chess Titles
  • Duchamp as a Chess Player
After becoming an established and successful artist, Marcel Duchamp, one of the father’s of Dadaism, turned his focus to playing chess, a game that enthralled him. He once famously remarked that “while all artists are not chess players, all chess players are artists.”

Maher rejects scientific knowledge in favor of disproved faith healing. Looks like Maher has finally found religion alongside Christian Scientists, snake handling Pentecostals, and witch doctors.

They do have to go after Maher on this one.

As for yogurt, there need to be more studies done. I'm a big fan, as long as the yogurt is "real" by my definition: contains no gelatin to hold it together. Cultures are the benefit, not the milk product itself. I've had docs recommend it when prescribing antibiotics to help replace good bacteria wiped out by the meds. So does it really help?

I'd participate in a study, but obviously I'm biased.

The point of the item is that Actimel was making false claims of scientific proof of action. The ASA did not say that there was no affect, but that Actimel claimed scientific proof when they had none. My concern is the use of pseudo-scientific jargon and false statements by companies persuading people to buy their product.

    Look at Zeno's blog here

The ASA did not say that there was no affect,

aha, gotcha! shouldn't that be "effect"? :) i'm waiting for my prize and wondering what it might be, oh boy.

    Congratulations, Jonathan.

You win a one-day supply of self-satisfaction. Enjoy!!

BTW - my excuse is that I wrote it at getting on for midnight here in Europe, after a night of watching TV and drinking Pineau des Charentes. Yes, I accept this is an excuse, not a good reason.

i already have a lifetime supply of self-satisfaction (obviously). have you no blessing left for me, father? :)

Yah, gotcha. That's why I said studies needed to be done. It'd be better to have the actual low down rather than false claims - in other words, yogurt is or isn't quasi-medicinal.

Believe it or not, I did read the link, thus my response. I did not have oodles of time due to a hectic mid-term week (still going on), so I kept everything as curt as possible, leaving out probably essential parameters for my point. I certainly don't believe all the points that Actimel was boasting about, but yogurt does seem to help me when my ears start to hurt. (Yes, I know that consuming dairy in this situation is counter-intuitive, but the cultures seem to over-ride the dairy alert.)

how 'bout some 'o that Pineau des Charentes?

Send me your e-mail address, Jonathan, and I will do my best

    pedantsareus@mac.com

And, of course, you can have all the blessings that an atheist can bestow.

BTW - tonight it was round the pub and 3 pints of Courage Director's, thus this is a trifle tardy.

As for you, Gypsy sister, don't moan to me about mid-term weeks, just get old enough to retire like what I done!

pedantsrus, i almost have the feeling that's a serious offer. the email address kind of throws down the 'ol gauntlet. so i'm gonna shout out to the brits, who(m) you seem to represent here most admirably.

DIDJA HEAR THAT, THEN? THE FOOKIN' ENGLISHMAN IS READY WITH THE BLOODY PINEAU D'FUCKIN' CHARENTES! HE DON'T OWE ME A FUCKIN' THING AND HE MAKES ME THE OFFER! FOOKIN' SAINTS, THE ENGLISH, GENEROUS MEN OF THEIR WORD, EVEN UNPLEDGED- PLAYERS, AND MAY GOD BLESS 'EM!

you don't really have to send me any wine, dude, but i appreciate the thought. :)

:~) NOt moanin - just splainin my lack of content. And of course, the younger get older fast than the elders! So I'm working on that one.

    zzzzzzzzz

Now you have embarrassed me, Jonathan.

Not easy at my time of life!

    But thanks for the thought.

And, gypsy sister, good luck from a GOM.
