In point of fact, Canada's head of state is a Hatian-born black woman, but it's kind of a moot point since she holds an appointed position.

Who invented the Internet? - no one person. But the World Wide Web, with its software, protocols, hypertext etc, is credited to Tim Berners-Lee, an Englishman working at the time in CERN (The European Organisation for Nuclear Research)

Just being a little pedantic.

Yeah, well, maybe so. We still filled it with porn!

This is one of the worst trivia questions ever, because there is no simple answer.

The DoD's ARPANET was technically the pre-cursor to the Internet. Lee came later, when the "web" became a standard protocol (http/https). Keep in mind, long before we had http we had telnet, connecting through a backbone put in place by the Feds as a Cold War defense.

And yeah- the pr0n is mostly us too. And Google. And eBay, Amazon and just about every other service that defined the 'net as we use it today.

you guys remember ASCII daisywheel porn? You'd print out a HUGE piece of paper where letters from the typewriter-like daisywheel represented grey values of pixels. You put the 5 feet long sheet on a wall, stood twenty feet away, and yep, there were titties. And were were GLAD to seem em.

(up hill, both ways)

A sample: http://www.asciipr0n.com/pr0n/pinups/pinup02.txt http://www.asciipr0n.com/pr0n/pinups/pinup23.txt

I still remember when we thought Netscape was the evil corporate browser, when Mosaic was king and long before MS thought "wow, HTML is a world wide standard. We can improve on that!" and changed it willy nilly.

I think your shenanigans caused the comment board to get aroused.

Back in my day, we called that "SCROLLING". I thought you were being funny. ;-)

While we're being pedantic... :)

... I'd like to begin by noting Tim Berners-Lee is awesome and played a vital in bringing the net home.

That said, I'm not sure that the invention of the www is the same quantum-leap that the Internet was. It was more an increment comparable in importance to the invention of the TCP/IP protocol. That is, www was a step of many in getting people online.

What actually popularized the Internet was Mosaic. Mosaic put it all in reach of the common man, making www more valuable. This led to it being pushed by corporations, who then extended it (content, https, flash, AJAX, social media) to what it is today.

Personally, I think the underlaying idea/philosophy of what the Internet COULD be was the real invention -- a true quantum-leap. That was envisaged by JCR Licklider and then built by ARPA (who also invented TCP/IP).

But regardless, it is a world wide construction. Yay humans!

In this video, Bill Maher bragged that the USA had elected a black head of state, a nubian warrior prince, and then went on to state that Canada's Head of State was Harper (boring white dude).

WRONG - our head of state, the Governor General, a black woman, our nubian princess, is Michaelle Jean.

Sorry Bill, our head of state is black and she came first.

Actually our head of state is Queen Elizabeth II. The Governor General is her representative. Furthermore, the head of state in Canada is merely symbolic. So having a representative of someone with no real power be black is hardly a break through in civil rights.

In fairness, Canada has a lower rate of visible minorities than the United States and a better history with them as well.

Stephen Harper is however a boring white dude.

Hi Ottawa Guy, I am an American that is not very familiar with Canada's Head of State,(the Governor General) so I had to look this one up. From what I have read it appears that you are right on the head of state part at least...But I think the more important word he was trying to drive home here was "elected", as in by the people. From what I have read on your head of state, the Governor General, she was appointed not elected. That's a huge difference. I mean please do correct me if I'm wrong.

"The Governor General of Canada is the vice-regal representative in Canada of the Queen of Canada, who is the head of state. Canada is one of sixteen Commonwealth realms, all of which share the same person as their respective sovereign. The monarch appoints the Governor General on the advice of the Canadian Prime Minister, after which the Governor General maintains direct contact with the monarch. There is no specific term. As with other appointments, the incumbent is said to serve at Her Majesty's pleasure, but by convention usually serves for approximately five years. Also by convention, the position tends to alternate between the anglophone and francophone communities."

Ottawa Guy, please...

It's for a laugh! And his point is right on!

If you're a protocol wonk in Rideau Hall, leave the job behind while surfing, and stay away from the porn while on a government machine.

Huh, and all this time I thought Queen Elizabeth was Canada's head of state. Well, I learn something new every day ;)

I've enjoyed some of Bil's recent New Rules because they were scathing - this one just made me laugh.

er- the commentary post-new rules, I mean.

I'm having problems viewing the quicktime videos. They play for 3 seconds stop for 1 second, play for three. This is even after I've let the entire video finish buffering the whole content. Is it possible to have other formats for the video?

Thanks again Norm,

He's funnier when he's happy, that was great!!

Oh thank you Norm. I was laughing so much that my stomach felt all wonderful and stuff.

U.S.A.! U.S.A.!

We're proud to be an American, where at least we know we're free...

A little patriotism is good for the soul. And for those without souls, its a fascinating psychological experiment.

Well, I'll let Americans bask in the Obama-glow for a while. I love the guy. But really, other countries have elected their minority communities to top leadership long before Barack Obama was elected. Canada elected its first French-Canadian Prime Minister 100 years ago. Peru elected a Japanese-Peruvian. And the French, British and, yes even Germans, elected Jewish PMs eons ago. Still I get why Americans are excited and proud. They should be. But just like health care, some of us have been doing it longer and better for a while now. We just don't make a big deal about it. :)

When were you planning on letting Americans bask?

Yeah Terry, we're trying to bask here! Stop ruining it! :P

Hey everyone. I was quite perplexed as to why Maher said, "Our majority white country just freely elected a black president, something no other democracy has ever done". Other democracies have elected black presidents. We can certainly debate about how free other elections are, for example notoriously suspicious ones in Africa, however they are as free in the technical sense as ours.

As Terry Levine mentions, electing minorities as the primary head of state is a phenomenon other countries have experienced. Not that I don't see Obama's election as significant for the US and the world, which I most certainly do, I only found the good man's comments on Real Time strange and a complete exaggeration.

"Other democracies have elected black presidents."

Yes I know, but were they majority white countries? If they are then it's news to me.

They are not majority white countries, but Maher had said that our election was "something no other democracy has ever done", not "something no other democracy with a white majority has ever done". Perhaps he meant to say that, but it's hard to tell from what he said.

Also, I must say defining "white" is tricky. European decent is almost always implied, as is African for "black".

Regardless, I feel that the this election was racially symbolic and ground breaking for the US in particular and the West to a great extent. As for the world, they welcome us aboard.

This is a truth full statement from Bill Maher, I don't know what all the ho-humming is about. Oh well, YAAAAEH FOR AMERICA!!!

These days, many people are on the brink of financial collapse due to the worsening economic situation. The unemployment rate is the highest it has been for almost thirty years and the numbers keep increasing. Many people wonder if they should get a payday loan if they just got a notice of lay off. Securing employment is the best thing to do right away. It is a much better idea to get money rolling in right now than to seek financing and additional debt. Relying on loans will never solve anything in the long run. If you find yourself facing a situation like this, it is better to find yourself another source of work and income to find a real solution to unemployment.
