Links With Your Coffee - Wednesday

Great posts today! Every one of them was a terrific read. I just forwarded Andrew Sullivan's article to every conservative I know in hopes it will enlighten their views a bit. And, of course, Mr. Hitchen's wins for best statement of the day:

"Those who despise science and learning are not anti-elitist. They are morally and intellectually slothful people who are secretly envious of the educated and the cultured. And those who prate of spiritual warfare and demons are not just "people of faith" but theocratic bullies. On Nov. 4, anyone who cares for the Constitution has a clear duty to repudiate this wickedness and stupidity."

I see you all have not lost your fight.

Good! Because we have a lot to do. We (the American people) are going to have to take back control of our elected government and set it on the right path of service to us and the greater good of the world. Obama and the Democrats are our best hope of doing that. Tell your family, friends, and everyone you know to support them as best they can. Because the Neocon machine of voter fraud, voter cheating, voter buying, and voter manipulation is already hard at work to cheat us again.

Beginning back in 2000, and before 9/11, it was mostly Republican governors, Republican legislatures, and county-elected Republican officials who conspired with the corrupt Bush administration to raise college and university tuitions by the fastest and highest rate in American history. Some state tuitions went up by as much as a whopping 30% in one year. The reason the Bush administration did this was to force struggling working class kids into the military to pay for the sudden jump in price.

Bush ideology had plans to get us into all these immoral, foolish, and unnecessary wars from the start so that they could use them to seize and keep power. But, for their plan to work, they needed even more volunteer soldiers whose blood they could spill. (Remember Bush's "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED" theatrics.) The exploitation and lost lives of these finest Americans is despicable, disgusting, and criminal. And it makes me SICK, and ANGRY.

We will have to vote for Obama in overwhelming numbers to overcome the Bush-McCain fraud machine. Vote early if you can. Then help your fellow Americans cast their votes now and on through election day. Vote for Obama as though your life (and the lives of your loved ones) depends on it. Because truly, it does: we will not survive 4 more years of the "Let Them Eat Cake" leadership of Bush, McCain, and their corrupt Republican allies.

Just look at the mess we have already. We can fix it with your vote. And REMEMBER, no matter which of us may stumble, the rest of us must continue to surge forward for Obama and the Democrats, and for ourselves most of all. Our children and the world are counting on us.

It's in our hands now. And I know we will get it done.

Japanese-style beef bowl had 1,090 calories. They decided to head down the street for a salad.

here's a trick: just don't eat it all

I agree - great round-up. With Hitchens though, gotta say, I think he belongs in Stephen Colbert's "It's Alive!" group.

Thanks again, Norm, for a wonderful round up of great articles! Forwarded the George Monblot ("numbskulls") article to our local school board. There seems to be a recent trend to authorize whatever charter school that happens along. Charter schools are permitted to have non-credentialed teachers. The mantra, echoed by Bill Gates, is to replace reading, writing and arithmatic with "rigor, relevance, and relationship." So much for a great liberal arts educaiton that gets one thinking creatively and out of the box.

The Hitchens article was right on...forwarded that one to another group of folks I know.

On making a virtue of ignorance:

Polls here suggest 10% of Americans still think Obama is a Muslim.

"I really don't care what Obama says because I don't want someone with a Muslim background running our country. He'll be letting them all come over here and he'll be buddy buddy with them all. We'll be giving them nuclear arms. Next thing you know they'll be attacking us again."

  • on the flip side -

In the mosque, Anoushka prays for peace. She thumbs her prayer beads and tells me that a Barack Obama victory would make the world a better place. She said: "He seems like a truthful person and he has good policies." She also happens to think, wrongly, that he's a Muslim.

I agree, also, that the links were especially good today.

Nonetheless, re: Gibbering Numbskulls:

only 26% accept that evolution takes place by means of natural selection; two-thirds of young adults are unable to find Iraq on a map; two-thirds of US voters cannot name the three branches of government;

Some actual data and sources on these figures would be nice, because they sound to me pretty damn implausible. I thought around 50 % of U.S. citizens believed in evolution (although, that it happens by natural selection may result in smaller figures). But truly: 2/3 of U.S. voter's cannot name the three branches of Government?

Norm, thanks for the great posts and the New Yorker cartoon link.
