Guilty

Ted Stevens Guilty all Counts

And another crooked Republican bites the dust.

Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens has been convicted of lying about free home renovations and other gifts he received from a wealthy oil contractor.

The Senate's longest-serving Republican, Stevens was found guilty on all seven counts of making false statements on Senate financial documents.

The verdict throws the upcoming election into disarray. Stevens is fighting off a challenge from Democrat Mark Begich and must now either drop out or continue campaigning as a convicted felon.

Imagine he drops out and someone has to take his place and campaign with the endorsements of Ted Stevens, george bush, and Sara Palin.

might as well tie a rock around your neck and try to walk to Russia.

But Stevens is a Republican so that means he's innocent and this is all part of some liberal conspiracy (according to typical Republican thought). The only crime Republicans can commit is having sex with a gay man everything else is "living the American dream".

One Alaskan down, one more to go.

Except this is Alaska, where an 84-year old embarrassment on trial for corruption was polling almost even with his opponent as of yesterday. When they hear that the oil companies bought Stevens a new massage chair, your average oil dividend recipient in Alaska thinks, "Hey, they did for me too!"

I bet Stevens will still get 40% of the vote. This state's reputation this year has taken a real dive.

If he gets reelected, i'll join the Alaska Independance Party with Todd...

Not technically 'convicted', but adjudicated as guilty, however Republicans assume a probe or inquiry of Dems to be a conviction....

I realized that if he is removed from office, the Governor of Alaska (I think it's a Republican female last time I checked) probably gets to appoint someone to fill out the term!!!

Really? Maybe she could appoint Todd Palin. He is actually more experienced than many candidates because he practically has "executive experience" and I hear a lot of these Senators don't. I'm sure there's a case to be made that he has more experience than Obama...and he won't be affected by that old boy's network...I think he's pretty maverick-y himself.

Yeah, he can see the Governor's office from his front porch.

Bush is just gonna pardon him in Jan. Still won't take away me glee when he leaves though.

I bet he will be pardoned by Bush.

Watch her appoint herself after losing the election. She'll be able to haunt McCain for the rest of his days.

Smash has it, (nice name, maybe i need to change mine). Palin will appoint herself to the national stage, to support the rise of the new republican party. Sort of Reganlight..

I feel the earth starting to cool...

Stevens could only be expelled from the Senate with a 2/3 vote. He's not automatically out just by being a felon. If I were a senator I would be very afraid of the kind of knucklehead that Palin would appoint. On the other hand it would be fun to force the GOP to vote against their oldest member. Whether they stand together and defend him or not it's a punch in the nose to Senate Republicans.

"Maybe she could appoint Todd Palin."

I think typically GOP governors would appoint a Republican. But maybe Sarah, who's very nice and friendly to all political parties in Alaska (except the Democrats), would like to appoint the first AIP senator ever! It's the ultimate glass ceiling. If we have to have a corrupt ultra-right-wing nut in the Senate, I'd prefer it to be a champion snowmobiler who seems to be a pretty good dad.

I don't see what the problem is, it's Alaska, what is there really to do there? Your options are:

a) Enter scandelous behaviour.

b) Drink.

Ok, ok, but the race between Stevens and Begich was running even BEFORE the verdict. Presumably being convicted as a felon is not going to help the guy. In other words, this talk of Palin appointing some (other) right wing nutjob to replace Stevens is more than premature.
