I think Colbert is getting a little too good at what he does. Thomas Frank is an intelligent guy, and we all know Stephen's whole show is meant to be one big, ironic joke, but he's so clever that he takes the usual conservative retorts to liberals and, while attempting to mock conservative pundits, he makes them sound more intelligent. This "should" have been a slam dunk for Frank - Stephen is in the act of pitching softballs to his liberal guests - but Frank just seemed befuddled by Stephen's retorts, and, in the end, looked a little foolish.
