Edwards to Endorse Obama
Edwards to Endorse Obama - The Caucus - Politics - New York Times Blog
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — John Edwards, the former senator from North Carolina who bowed out of the presidential race in January, is expected to endorse Senator Barack Obama at a rally being held here tonight.
Officials announced the news shortly after Mr. Obama landed here late this afternoon. The campaign has timed the announcement to coincide with the start of the major evening newscasts, which would have otherwise focused on Senator Hillary Clinton

And, In another sign that the Democratic presidential primary has effectively ended in the minds of many, NARAL Pro-Choice America, the granddaddy of pro-choice political groups, endorsed Illinois Sen. Barack Obama today.
So, will he say I endorse "him" or I endorse 'em? hmmm... Nice timing though, wow!
Attorney General Edwards?
Brilliant tactical move from the Obama camp. I wonder how long they've been holding on to this and if they've been shooting for today from a ways out.
Head of Health and Human Services, perhaps...
Veep?
Edwards is still touting universal health care - in the Obama camp. I wonder what agreement, if any, they've reached.
Watchiung this clip was a little weird, but so 21st-C I guess. Here's the white man espousing Martin Luther King's message while the African American man/candidate looked on. I know each has his own style, but the turnaround was interesting for me. I know Obama wants the same kinds of things Edwards wants, but the delivery is decidely different. Edwards can definitely help round out Obama's campaign.
Watching... decidedly...
Edwards is a poor VP candidate.
He got creamed in the debate against Cheney in 2004 and I have no desire to see it happen against whoever McCain chooses for VP.
Obama should probably choose a VP with some executive experience, or someone who has strong foreign policy credentials.
But Edwards is obviously qualified for AG, and I would love to have him in the Cabinet!
He did do a poor job against Cheney but I don't think that would happen again. That said, what would he really buy Obama by having him as VP? I think it would just strengthen him with the people he's already got.
He needs to add more to his side because, as much as this should be a slam dunk, you know it won't be and that the Dems might even lose. The Republicans want their judges in and their tax cuts made permanent.
Maybe Webb?
This is too late for me. I think it was clear for some time that he would eventually endorse Obama even though he's really torn between the two candidates. But coming now it looks like "me too".
An Edwards endorsement would have had more strength coming at the height of the Wright controversy, for instance. Now, that even the Matthews' and Russerts declare this thing over, well, it's neither surprising nor game-changing.
Edwards is weak. He also lost when running with Kerry and lost his own state when seeking the nomination.
Now he's jounsing for a position.
Btw, ironic that they are holding the rally in Michigan and campaigning in Michigan, considering how obama blocked revotes in the state.
But good for him to take so much time praising Hillary Clinton. And what a shame that some people in these audiences just can't drop the booing – when it should be clear to them that a little courtesy would come over very well with the Clinton supporters.
A shame. It all just reminds me that I would have preferred Edwards, but oh well..
Has anyone seen this old video of '20 minutes on why I am 4Barack' ? Its by professor Lessig http://www.lessig.org/ and it was pointed out to me by a few former Clinton supporters who changed camps after they saw this.

Indeed. The people booing Hillary at the beginning of the clip really got on my nerves.
"That said, what would he really buy Obama by having him as VP? I think it would just strengthen him with the people he's already got."
Edwards was pretty awesome up there riffing on Obama's tunes. "Yes We Can" indeed. A fun speech. Who would have thought a year ago that Edwards would put the punctuation mark on the nomination where Bill Clinton, John Kerry and Ted Kennedy couldn't, and Gore and Carter wouldn't?
I think he would be fine as VP. He's stronger with the people that Obama didn't get. Edwards was getting those WV voters that Hillary cleaned up with yesterday. I'm not sure if history shows that the VP helps much in terms of region or demographics, but it seems he could be a great wingman and your #1 campaigner. Put Edwards up there and stick Michelle Obama in the audience a bit more.
On the other hand I'd be more worried about political style. Edwards did a wonderful job mixing together the 2 Americas stump speech with the 1 America message that Obama has, but the fact is that they're very different messages. People talk about race but we should also think about the cultural appeal of the Obama message. It's something that connects much more with post-materialist educated whites than it does with working class whites. One could say Edwards adds balance but I think it dilutes the message.
I am a sucker for Edwards. The Hilary booing was in poor taste. The thing is that Hillary supporters do the same thing when Obama's name gets dropped. Speeches like Edwards I think can bridge Hilary Obama divide so that the Democrats can concentrate on McCain instead of gutting the party.
Obama /Edwards look like a hand picked team . They looked great on stage togather I really like and believe in both.
They also believe in most everything they want to accomplish. Go Barack /Michell Obama / John /Elizabeth Edwards 08/12
You are the deal
The other day he slipped up and said "Obama doesn't need my support" when talking about the prospect of an endorsement. My guess is he went ahead and said okay, after that WV thumping lets whitewash the news and endorse.
Wow, did you see all the older white women crammed behind the podium? Product placement is not just for sitcoms anymore!
Lies. Due to my wanting to stay cordial, I'll leave it at that.
Edwards as AG would be great, but not as VP.
I think Edwards endorsed at the right time, when the party needs to start coming together, all sides, to really focus on winning in November.
I don't think his endorsement would have helped that much before now anyway. even if every single one of his 7% of the vote in WV voted for him, hillary still would have won by 2-1.
His speech was well written too, focusing so much on Democratic platforms rather than Obama specifically. A return to focus.
"there are people who believe.. that we can run our cars on something else than oil"
.. there are some who believe in santa claus as well.
The difference being that we've actually built cars that don't run on oil ; no one has seen Santa yet, so far as I know.
Ah, yes, Newton's fourth law, "Objects in motion are only in motion due to the burning of oil"
Isn't this a little odd? Isn't Hillary the lone advocate that Michigan should have a re-vote, legal or not?
A state never organized by Obama staff and before this week never visited by Obama.
Consider that by visiting now, making this large announcement in Michigan, it takes much of the steam out of the Clinton push that Obama does not care about the state, helping both the perception of Obama's interest in fairness and Obama's support in a general election.
So, in the end, about five birds with one stone. I hate the politics game, bu this was really well played.
