McCain, A Foreign Policy Expert

A McCain Gaffe in Jordan

Pressed to elaborate, McCain said it was "common knowledge and has been reported in the media that al-Qaeda is going back into Iran and receiving training and are coming back into Iraq from Iran, that's well known. And it's unfortunate." A few moments later, Sen. Joseph Lieberman, standing just behind McCain, stepped forward and whispered in the presidential candidate's ear. McCain then said: "I'm sorry, the Iranians are training extremists, not al-Qaeda." The mistake threatened to undermine McCain's argument that his decades of foreign policy experience make him the natural choice to lead a country at war with terrorists. In recent days, McCain has repeatedly said his intimate knowledge of foreign policy make him the best equipped to answer a phone ringing in the White House late at night.

It's still a gaffe. Iraqi Sunnis have no reasons to befriend Iran, to say the least. McCain's remark is simply typically, in my view, of the appalling ignorance in this country of the basic facts and dynamics of that country, as though all Muslims were the same, or all Iraqi can be lumped together, and as though the latter were not in the midst of a bitter sectarian civil war.

I'm relieved that there's finally a post here being critical of John McCain instead of the steady flow of posts being critical of Barack Obama.

What most concerns me is that supporters of HIllary Clinton are busy attacking Barack Obama, and supporters of Barack Obama are busy attacking Hillary Clinton. What the hell is wrong with Democrats and progressives? Don't they realize that all of this infighting is destroying the Democratic party and paving the way for a John McCain victory? Seriously, I am dismayed and disheartened by this kind of behavior.

And yes, I realize that some think that destroying the Democratic party is a good thing in that it paves the way for a third party. So many progressives feel that if their candidate of choise loses, then it would be better for John McCain to win, and then they will wait for the next election.

Well, this is precisely why we had George Bush for eight years instead of Al Gore or John Kerry.

candidate of choise

correction:

That should have been "candidate of choice"

And there are those who feel that John Kerry or Al Gore would have been no different than George Bush. I am still wondering why anyone would think this way.

John Kerry and Al Gore had to campaign in a very conservative country in which ultra right-wingers have taken over the consciousness and it can't be easy to be a progressive campaigning in such times as we now live in where Americans quiver in their shoes at the thought of terrorism and when whether or not one wears a fucking flag pin on one's lapel is seriously an issue..

And now many progressives are saying that there is little difference between John McCain, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, and this is why the conservatives will end up having the upper hand in the general election, and this is what the answer is to the question that will no doubt be asked by some European newspapers:

"How can 150 million Americans be so stupid?

JoAnn, once again I agree with you. That's twice in one week!!1! Dumbass McCain is just sitting there like a big, fat, slow-moving target and all Obama & Clinton (and their supporters) can do is snipe at each other. They should end the bickering & stomp McCain and then stomp him some more and then some more.

When the British newspaper, the Independant, asked the question, "–”HOW CAN 95000000 AMERICANS BE SO STUPID?”, the answer is that so many Americans felt that there was little difference between the Democrat and the Republican. The answer is that so many progressives felt that the Democrat wasn't leftist enough for them, so they either voted for Ralph Nader or they didn't vote at all.

And we're on the road to making the same fucking mistake again.

Dumbass McCain is just sitting there like a big, fat, slow-moving target and all Obama & Clinton (and their supporters) can do is snipe at each other. They should end the bickering & stomp McCain and then stomp him some more and then some more.

Yes, we agree once again. ;)

And I apologize for attacking Lemos so much. I understand that I have made my arguments too personal. And I don't like having to attack Hillary Clinton. The only reason that I did was to point out that both of them resort to right-wing talking points because they have to in order to swim the waters of our country where wearing a flag pin and demonstrating how they feel that we're the best country in the whole wide world is a must for winning an election.

Anyone who is not able to navigate these waters (Ron Paul, Gravel, and Kucinich, for example) have no chance whatsover of winning the election. It is only Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama who have figured out how to navigate this complex sea of nationalism and stupidity. We should be supporting either one of them and working our little asses off to defeat John McCain.

kum ba yah, JoAnn, kum ba ya ;)

Also, for all of those John Edwards supporters. He was ever bit as cautious and right-wingish in some ways as Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama now appear, and so he flip flopped and became more populist in his rhetoric and guess what? He's no longer a candidate.

Mitt Romney also flip flopped and attemped to temper his more left-wing idealogy, but it didn't work. People didn't accept the way that Romney's views changed when he became a presidential candidate anymore than they accepted how Edward's views has changed.

I have seen the speeches that John Edwards gave around 2003 and 2005 and he comes across as some warmonger neocon.

kum ba yah, JoAnn, kum ba ya ;)

Smart ass! ;)

And while here on this blog Obama's problem with pastor Wright has been highlighted, what about John McCain's endorsement of religious wackos who he has not denounced and rejected?

Contrast the Chimpromised MSM’s nonstop flagellation of Obama (who disavows the remarks) with the free pass John McCavein is getting in the media. McCavein has praised and embraced 2 of the most despicable Jesusistani elders in America today, without even a whisper from the lapdogs of our “fair” media.

Here’s what McCavein had to say about the endorsement of John Hagee…

Yesterday, Senator John McCain said he was “very honored by Pastor John Hagee’s endorsement.” The Republican presidential hopeful also called Hagee “the staunchest leader of our Christian evangelical movement,” citing the minister’s pro-Israel stance.

And here’s what Hagee has to say about those Satan-worshiping Catholic murderers…

Adolf Hitler attended a Catholic school as a child and heard all the fiery anti-Semitic rantings from Chrysostom to Martin Luther. When Hitler became a global demonic monster, the Catholic Church and Pope Pius XII never, ever slightly criticized him. Pope Pius XII, called by historians ‘Hitler’s Pope,’ joined Hitler in the infamous Concordat of Collaboration, which turned the youth of the [sic] Germany over to Nazism, and the churches became the stage background for the bloodthirsty cry, ‘Pereat Judea’[19]…. In all of his [Hitler’s] years of absolute brutality, he was never denounced or even scolded by Pope Pius XII or any Catholic leader in the world. To those Christians who believe that Jewish hearts will be warmed by the sight of the cross, please be informed-to them it’s an electric chair. (pp. 79-81)

And then there's McCain's endorsement of Rod Parsley. Click on the link I provided to learn more.

So why are pastor Wright's comments being playing out on the MSM over and over and over again, and yet these comments from Hagee and Parsley, whom McCain endorses, not getting aired over and over and over again? hmmm..?

Also, for all of those John Edwards supporters. He was ever bit as cautious and right-wingish in some ways as Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama now appear, and so he flip flopped and became more populist in his rhetoric and guess what? He's no longer a candidate.

At last, at last, the open air admission that Edwards is not god, and would not magically save us from all our problems in a way which, somehow, the putatively more shilly Barack and Hill somehow can't muster but that's we on the left will just have to settle for!

Although, officially, I don't quite agree with the flip-flop part. Charles suggested on a different thread that perhaps we should prohibit current office holders from running for a different office. If Edwards is any indication of that would be like, it's probably a good idea. So far as I can tell, he spent years putting together detailed research and proposals that have now become center pieces of the democratic platform.

I wonder whether his populist rhetoric would have more resonance on the national (rather than just democratic) scene now that we are at the beginning of a recession that may turn out to be brutal. A very cynical part of me doubts this...

Listen here to what John Ewards had to say about all of this in 2003 at the California Democratic convention.

And listen here what John Edwards had to say in 2002.

Contrast this with what such senators as Russ Feingold had to say: Why I Oppose Bush's Iraq War Resolution

Still think that John Edwards was the Democratic dream come true?

"Chimpromised", "jesusisanti" LOL, that's perfect.

Joann: I meant to suggest that I too was annoyed by the Edwards worship, while trying to give the guy his due.

My own view is that the Kerry defeat perhaps taught Edwards something--that playing the game the Kerry way doesn't get you anywhere, and even if it did, it probably wouldn't be very worth it. He is not only responsible for a lot of the details we have on the Democratic platform on key issues such as health care. He was the one who was bold enough to put them on the table, forcing the other candidates to fall all over themselves trying to come up with matching and equally detailed proposals.

After reading McCain/McCavein's comments here and in the NYT, I may have to stand corrected from a prior post. Perhaps the Dems can win against if they put the war up front. Although, it doesn't hurt that both Obama and Clinton are back to the quick withdrawal of troops rhetoric. Time and election will tell if they'll actually end this mess.

This link provides a series of articles that are worth the read:

Baghdad Bureau - correspondents's outlook over the past 5 years

As for Edwards, his vote to give Bush the authority to send us to Iraq was one of the strikes against him. Publicly admitting his mistake helped me some in my eventual support. As for "flip-flopping," I can't say I agree. His populist message was something he arried on during the Kerry run for the presidency; it just didn't make headlines.

This Nation article from Feb. 2004 hits some highlights. I know from some tv footage that Edwards was out in rural southeast talking to folks about jobs, health care, and so on. This go round, he made it more central in his platform, which, as noted above, poked Obama and Clinton enough for them to put progressive social issues on a more front burner in their campaigns.

"Chimpromised", "jesusisanti" LOL, that's perfect.

You're welcome :)

I am sick to death of McCavein's multiple free MSM passes, while Obama has to answer for every damned thing his wife and his pastor say or do. The hell with that.

JoAnn: Still think that John Edwards was the Democratic dream come true?

Jeez JoAnn, he said it was a mistake.

What do you call a mistake that lasts for years while receiving enough knowledge to know its a mistake? Oh right, a character flaw.

Now that John is out we should focus on the current candidates.

Hillary calling for a bigger army and keeping up the fight in Iraq http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/05/23/senate.military/

Hillary being used against Howard Deans anti war Stance. http://dir.salon.com/story/news/feature/2003/12/20/clinton_dean/index.html

If those three articles don't Strike fear into your heart, then you are not for peace.

This seems the history we are asked to forget.

McCain said it was "common knowledge and has been reported in the media ...."

Hey Mr. McCain, is it possible that it's "common knowledge" BECAUSE it was reported in the media? And, is it possible that those that control the media create "common knowledge" to fit their own agendas as they decide what's to be the current reality? I'm just curious, could you work that into your next explanation of how things happen in this best of all possible worlds? http://boskolives.wordpress.com/

McCain's Age: Who's The President Of Germany Again?

When you're the oldest candidate in the field by something like 10+ years, these episodes of forgetfulness or confusion are going to resonate with people. In this instance, McCain confuses the name of the leaders of Germany and Russia.
