NPR: Candidates' Prescriptions for Health Care Reform

This is an excellent, and I beleive balanced examination of the pluses and minuses of the various plans the candidates have presented. Highly recommended.

NPR: Candidates' Prescriptions for Health Care Reform:
“ If there's one thing the presidential primary candidates agree upon, it's that the American health-care system could use some treatment — if not a complete overhaul. Political scientist Jonathan Oberlander diagnoses the problems with the current system and examines the remedies offered by each candidate.”

Great review.

it's that the American health-care system could use some treatment — if not a complete overhaul

Absolutely. A complete overhaul. But a complete overhaul is very very difficult and I'm not holding my breath.

This was a fantastic and intriguing broadcast.

I wish they would have spelled out a little bit more some of the serious failings of the Republican proposals. Naturally, the idea is to de-regulate the industry even further to increase "competition" (the premise consisting in the theological fantasy that the market will sort it all out, some how, so that everything works out super duper, peachy-king, don't ask about the details). In one of the Republican debates, Russert was very direct when he asked about this. Specifically, he said, basically, look, the only way to move to the kind of de-regulated, single payer system you guys are proposing is (a.) cut spending on tech. (b.) cut payments to doctors and hospitals, or (c.) hike consumer cost.

That is but exactly right.
