Media Love

It's tough to satirize the media love of Obama, how do you exaggerate the fawning treatment he's been getting. To be fair it's as much an anti-Hillary bias as anything. A reader pointed out the other day how, I believe it was John King had referred to Mitt Romney as still a young man, and then made the astute observation that it was unlikely a similar reference to Clinton's age would be made though Romney was six months older.

I agree that there's a point to be made there about media love, but the unfunniness totally drowned it out. I couldn't even finish watching the bit. Again, flashbacks to the Fox News Daily Show wannabe came to my mind.

I thought so, too, unfortunately. Although I was more than ready to laugh about it, it was just too long. The "we are totally in the tank" speech at the beginning kind of killed the point.

A pity. Because I actually quite like the current line-out of SNL.

I think that SNL became too mainstream, oh, about twenty years ago. Imagine Monty Python still making new shows, with a Lorn-esque producer calling the shots. I swear those comedians fear that man so much they kill the funny week after week.

shrug if they had made it half as long, cut out her opening 'give away the punch-line' monologue ('kind of a stalker..' even) maybe it would be worth while.

maybe. shrug

It wasn't all that long ago that the MSM were reporting that the election in November would come down to Clinton v. Giuliani. Kinda makes you wonder what happened to all the media love that Clinton was getting, and how things started moving in Obama's favor. Oh I remember now, it was the primaries, when the people actually started voting.

Perhaps I am unaware of this supposed bias because I don't own a TV. I would say the NYT and other print media that I read has a pretty plain Clinton bias. Perhaps the TV media does have this bias, but if so, I find it hard to see in the debates.

Strange also that I saw no one complain when all the media, circa a few months ago, painted Hillary's success as "inevitable" and kept treating her like she had already won.

At any rate, unusual company when liberal blogs and William Kristol start towing the same line.

I'm actually in favor of Obama (voted for him here), but far from fanatical.

My girl friend, OTH, is a supporter of Clinton and came up with a cute play on his name a couple weeks ago. I thought you might like it, Norm.

She said, "But if Barack wins, it will be an Obama Nation."

(best if said out-loud)

Had lunch in my car yesterday and listened to AM talk radio. I dialed over to the Air America station, they were bitching about Hillary's tactics. I dialed over to the right-wing station, they were bitching about Hillary's tactics.

At this point, the Hillary apologists need to consider that maybe it's not the media - maybe it's just her.

Anthony: lol

I don't really buy the idea that the media is being too easy on Obama, esp with all the nonsense questioning his patriotism.

I they're fawning over anything, it's his ability to draw large crowds and fill stadiums.

ARE YOU SERIOUS NORM!?!?!

Yeah, Hillary has been treated unfairly by the media...give me a break! Imagine if Kucinich or John Edwards got the kind of coverage and favoritism by the media that she got, we wouldn't even be having this discussion right now would we? I can not possibly imagine that woman OR obama getting anymore airtime, it's ridiculous! Personally I'm at the point where I want to gouge my own eyes out if I have to see either one of them again, I reached my B.S. limit with them both a long time ago.

Does SNL even pretend to be about humor anymore or have they given that up to make not-very-astute political points? They should have buried that show years ago along with the rotting carcass of Larry King. It reminds me of that Fox News comedy program. Sorry but a shitty comedy show is still shitty even though they think of themselves as progressives.

"Obama Nation" I don't agree with the sentiment, but a very clever coinage.

Surely you jest! Six months ago, Clinton - and to a lesser extent Guiliani - were the the corporate-media appointed front-runners. The unfair treatment was that given to Dennis Kucinich most of all, but also to the other also-rans. Right up until Iowa, Hillary was the candidate to beat. But then a funny thing happened: Hillary never built on her lead, never broadened her appeal past her formidable base so she stayed flat in the polls. Guiliani sank in the polls everywhere he campaigned, and Hillary stayed where she was. The Republicans so thoroughly demonized the Clintons throughout the nineties that her negatives were high and have stayed high.

This is a good thing - not because she is less qualified than Obama, and not because she isn't bright and hard-working. Its a good thing because she would have a hard time beating McCain. She is not a great campaigner and as she has begun to go negative on Obama, she is looking weaker, not stronger.

Obama is the new thing - the media is being awfully nice to him. That will end soon and we'll se how he handles it. But Hillary - she has peaked and I don't think she has much potential of getting a bigger slice of the electorate than she already has.

Hillary was basically appointed the front runner early on (until people voted). Meanwhile, Obama was the Muslim, madrassa-attending.....etc To pretend the media has been fawning over Obama is ridiculous.

I'm a bit late in saying this, I realize, but jeeeezus... This makes the days of Cheri Oteri look hilarious. Which is really sad, because I couldn't stand that cast.

That dark haired gal's not too funny. The real gal she portrayed was definately not an Obamian. She tried a gotcha on him early on.

Awww boohoo poor poor hillary..... you gotta be fucking kidding me.

I've been reading this blog for a few months now. Since this Hillary / Obama thing started I've been really disturbed at how all these fairly reasonable personalities on the blog comments section have become insane idiots. No wonder you guys cannot vote a non idiot into office. It's really astounding.

The portrayal of Hillary was pretty funny, especially with the crap she's said lately, but the rest was not.

Agree with leftbanker. People have lamented the decline of snl for years and... to no avail, the show hasn't improved.

Remember when would do memorable, biting political satire? Send ups of Ford, Carter, even latterly, like Reagan; criticize the media (was the whole reason "weekend update" got started - it was a dig against established news shows), etc...?

I like the Daily Show and Bill Maher's skits, but they pale in comparison to old SNL stuff...

It's a shame. No edge, and even worse, not funny.

"It reminds me of that Fox News comedy program. Sorry but a shitty comedy show is still shitty"

Exactly... really ... NOT... Funny.

"Obama Nation" I don't agree with the sentiment, but a very clever coinage.

had to say it aloud before i got it. that is really clever.

Siriusly, Obama Nation is a great one, a great done, er deed, indeed, meme. A bright star in the galaxy of cultural viri, er, viruses.

The blackface (LOL) didn't quite have the O-riginal's bouncy rhythm down, but the tone, the bari-tone was, maybe a quarter tone sharp, pretty close.
