- SPIEGEL Interview with Author Philip Roth: 'Bush Is Too Horrendous to Be Forgotten' -
SPIEGEL talks to American author Philip Roth about growing old, why George W. Bush is the worst American president ever and why he never gives out his cell phone number.

I have perhaps greatly misunderestimated the Bush administration.
.It's true. I have, lo these past 7.3 miserable and karmically bitch-slapped years, perhaps not clearly appreciated their ruthless and demeaning but perhaps rather insanely effective (well, sort of) economic plan for America. Or rather, 'Murka

Clinton working to have Michigan, Florida delegates seated and voting at convention.
But I'm an idiot for suggesting she is dishonest...
Roth's political comments were a disappointment. He's going to vote for Barack Obama because he's black and because we have a bigger problem in the US than we have with gender?
His reasons for why Bush is the worst president ever were not so bad, but don't go to the root of the matter. Bush represents the triumph of mediocrity, cynicism, mendacity, and theocracy in government. The Iraq war is just the worst symptom of his terrible presidency. He spits on the process of legitimate government. He spits on the Constitution. He spits on science. He makes me embarrassed to be an American citizen.
I don't know why that 8 year old Galluop Poll is going around.

Re: Sexist language "You challenge the status quo and suddenly the claws come out," Obama said.
Oh come on. This is just getting r.i.d.i.c.u.l.o.u.s.
If you Google:
"Her claws came out" You get 900 Google search results
"His claws came out" You get 1050 Google search results
Most of these entries, however, pertain to some bear or cat or eagle or some such animal.
Someone's claws coming out pertains to both men and women. There is example after example, but here a few:
The claws came out Tuesday night when Democratic presidential candidates debated in Philadelphia
Vast army of 'Hillary haters' has claws out
To reiterate - she will do or say anything she needs to do or say to win political points, no matter how cheap and ridiculous they may be.
Can anyone imagine 4 years of dealing with this kinda piddly shit?
I am a woman and, as such, okay, sure it would be cool to have a female president. But, please-oh-please, NOT one of these humourless old-wave feminists with sand in their vaginas.
Seriously? Now saying that someone is "feeling down" is sexist? Wow. I detest sexist comments such as those made by Calligraph, so I guess that I should feel offended by this statement, but I still don't get it. I think that for a woman to run for office, she can't complain about every little perceived nuance of sexism. I also think that for an African American to run for office, he/she can't complain about every little perceived nuance of racism. I thought that all of the talk of Bill Clinton's so-called racist comment was ridiculous. He was simply pointing out that Obama would naturally have more votes amongst African Americans/Blacks. I just didn't see that comment as being racist. I've also stated on this blog that I don't see Bill Clinton supporting his wife as making her look weak as all candídates' spouses support their spouse.
Does everyone have to walk on eggshells?
Here's an article about Ron Paul not doing too well: Feeling Down About Iowa? Read this!
Chirac is feeling down, a political ally confides
I was really hoping that we could all get beyond the race/gender issues in this campaign.
Anyway, Obama's just playing the same kind of game that Hillary was playing when she said, “I think what we saw last night was that he’s very frustrated – Sen. Obama is very frustrated. The events of the last 10 or so days, particularly the outcomes in New Hampshire and Nevada, have apparently convinced him to adopt a different strategy,”
And some people thought that Hillary Clinton was being patronizing when she said that Barack was a "talented" and "young African-American man."
I just think that their claws are coming out, which is only natural in a race which is neck and neck.
Again, all of this kind of bickering back and forth is just ridiculous.
Furthermore, and I hate to even bring this up, but I noticed in the comments that some women were assuming that "feeling down" and "periodically" (LOL!, seriously, that was funny) referred to her menstrual period perhaps, which is ridiculous because she's 60 years old! Or perhaps it might refer to being menopausal, which is also ridiculous because she's well past that age.
Sheesh!
And even if she was not past that age.... oh, nevermind! What a silly discussion! Oh...
yawn.
The gallup poll article is from 1999. Many of the respondents don't know that the earth revolves around the sun because they are dead.
My guess is Americans would do slightly better in 2008.
Silly people trusting pseudo-science, what won't you believe in? (Hint: not God)
Anyway, to the main attraction...
Antfucking to play the gender/race card will make a mockery out of the Democratic party, especially in the eyes of the conservatives. But above all, it dumbs down the level of ideas in the party. Image and ignorance is what the Republican party thrives on, and it's the of progressives that actually want to see... progress.
Let's talk about marriage law, appropriate levels of taxation, protecting/granting religious freedom, an Equal Rights Amendment, funny/ironic consequences of various grand legislation (like the Civil Rights Act of 1964). Is it so hard to raise the discourse on politicial/social matters? Okay, maybe it is, but shouldn't we try anyway?
Or maybe I just need to suck it up and blog on them myself. You know, take personal responsibility for this sort of thing.
Now fucking ants is controversial? What next?
Yeah! Let's talk about this, because who other people marry has such a profound affect on my life.
Is there something I should be taking from the "Liberal Fascism" link today. If there is, I missed it.
Obama's sexual language is perhaps something to keep an eye on, but if one quote every other month or so when he is called to describe the negative attacks of a female candidate once a week, It shows he has been trying not to go there.
If that youtube video is how the clinton campaign is intending to reach out to young people, then they be in trouble. I am surprised square dancing didn't breakout in the middle of that.

More troubling then a ballot challenge in a state leg race?
Little Mickey- So it sounds like what female president you WOULD like would be a young, quick to laugh, new wave feminist with an active vagina! Gee - almost sounds like a female version of someone you want to have a beer with.
Perhaps just someone that is open minded enough that one person on their staff would know that "pimped" is a term used in pop culture to the extent that it is not considered offensive by most.
"Now fucking ants is controversial? What next?"
The word "antfucking" is slang for nitpicking. While obscure, I can't help but use it.
"Yeah! Let's talk about this, because who other people marry has such a profound affect on my life."
That's actually kind of the point. People can understandably get hung up on the abortion issue (gotta have them know people are looking to abort healthy ones at the eight-month mark), but there is no (good) excuse for meddling when mutual consent is in place. Although there was also an article a while ago proposing that, legally speaking, there should be no marriage and only civil unions, that marriage is what happens outside of the role of government, and that civil unions are how the government can establish the appropriate rights (such as parental and visitation).
.........
Finally, regarding "humourless old-wave feminists with sand in their vaginas," well, that's inappropriate and misleading. Most "old-wave feminists" are/were very reasonable in their ideology, just as were most in the Civil Rights movement with respect to race. Granted, there are some who take things a little too far (and sometimes it's just a matter of being human -- just as many people in an oppressing class underestimate the plight of subjugated, some of those who are subjugated tend to miss ways that the oppressing class can oppress their own), and there are a handful that go so far as to demand subjugation to themselves (Black Panthers). But demonizing a whole era of feminism (or civil rights) is absolutely off the mark.
As for Hillary Clinton, she did (wrongly) focus on trying to help appoint women specifically back in the '90s, but this bad article wasn't written by HRC's campaign, which is a little more than we can say for Obama's attention to Hillary's MLK/LBJ commentary (and while she was perhaps off the mark, is not important). Of course, Bill has said other things, so it's not like the Clinton campaign is clean either...
Regarding the last two comments, making effort to achieve understanding rather than rush to exploit "gaffs" seems to be the operative idea. Well, ultimately we more selfishly care whether what we say would be understood or misunderstood by our representatives, and that's how the GOP went with the "want to have a beer with the guy" idea for Bush II. When one of them demonstrates ignorance of (y)our domain, you/we show disapproval. If a candidate is to have broad approval, s/he will have to show the necessary caution in general, but these people tend to be crucified (even by us) for not being quick to put people who say ridiculous/terrible things in their place.
Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled programming.
Very true
I can't speak to wether Barack wrote the article or not, but when I heard the comment it sounded like she was saying this:
I am like LBJ and Obama is like MLK. LBJ passed the legislation that MLK advocated for, there fore LBJ was a better president then MLK would have been and I will be a better president then Barack Obama.
Sounded objectionable at the time.
I don't know that this is all that true although Joe Wilson seemed to be making that attack on Obama in his endorsement.
My point on "pimped", is that Clinton seems so out of touch with the younger generation, and even after seeing the generation gap become a voting gap in this election she still seems to have no one in her circle with any understanding of the under 50 crowd. Her lame music video is another fine example.
Don't get me wrong, the pimped comment was stupid, and worthy of an apology.
That's just nonsense, particularly when you consider how destructive the 'whole era of feminism' has been to our country.
There's a reason that feminist icons like Gloria Steinem are well-known frostyboxes. It's because the feminist movement - note FEMINIST, not EGALITARIAN, which means it's about empowering women, not about equality - has taken the identity of not only being pro-female, it's anti-male.
This display of retarded language parsing is just another example of the reality of feminism in action, along with an education system that has been completely skewed anti-male, a society that has been indoctrinated into worshiping mothers and dismissing fathers, and on and on.
Calligraph,
I don't like this women vs men battle. The over-the-top feminists who you speak of are one side of the coin. You and men like you are the other side of the coin.
I find this type of discussion to be exhausting and tiresome.
I'm also finding the Obama vs Clinton discussion to be exhausting and tiresome.
While I support Obama, and have been arguing for his nomination, I would be perfectly content with Hillary Clinton as president of the United States of America.
Sheesh.
I just want a Democrat to win and most of all because I'm very concerned about future Supreme Court appointments.
Please let our next president be either Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama, and not John McCain... Please!
Destructive? WTF are you talking about? Women in business, women getting close to equal pay, workplace intimidation and domestic abuse made public issues. Bra burning and free love was part of the same era. Perhaps not spoken from the same lips, but sexual equality was part of the politics of feminism
You apparently read the Rush Limbaugh revisionist history of feminism.
I think Feminism needs to rethink its public persona because young people just don't see the issue in the same way it was seen years back 30 years ago.
When men talk about feminism being anti-male, I am always amazed. I think it's a generational thing - how old is Rush? Or maybe it's cultural? The macho culture? Do they think feminists don't have husbands? Or sons? Maybe they are talking about gay women being anti-male but, if that is true, I have the feeling that is nothing to do with feminism. I don't know because the only gay woman friend I have loves men (as do almost all of my feminist girlfriends). I do have one friend, a feminist who has trouble with men but that's because she's a victim of incest - she does like gay men though... I supposed it's just a gut reaction to the word "feminism" because of the right wing calculated propaganda against words and concepts like feminism and liberalism.
jillbryant3000: So it sounds like what female president you WOULD like would be a young, quick to laugh, new wave feminist with an active vagina!
To be said to have sand in one's nether-region is not, as you seem to assume, a comment upon one's age (or activity level of said nether-region). It implies a penchant for whining and irritability.
(urbandictionary.com - for all your hip slang needs!)
And as for this: But demonizing a whole era of feminism (or civil rights) is absolutely off the mark.
Absolutely - and I did not do that. My comment reflected my opinion about the whiff of mustiness that Steinem et al. have CURRENTLY.
And 'mustiness', I hasten to add, is not a shot about their ages.
Yes, Cob webs would be a shot at their age.
The state of their vaginas aside, Feminism is indeed in need of some rebranding and some new missions. They should be fighting the oppression of women that is still very real, rather then complaining about how sexist it is not to support Hillary Clinton.
That said, sandy vaginas and their implications are the negative attack of the right, which is mostly perpetuated by highlighting the complaints of a few feminists rather then the work of the movement as a whole.
I have actually met a number of these feminist leaders and didn't smell a musty odor or anything.
