    46 chromosomes. Duh!

right on, i knew my b.s. degree in philosophy meant something!

    They've all sported memorable hair-dos.

The list of "what is philosophy?" includes some of the most boring and sundry philosophers (e.g. Lewis, snnnooooorreee!). Here are some ones I live better:

The aim of philosophy, abstractly formulated, is to understand how things in the broadest possible sense of the term hang together in the broadest possible sense of the term. Under “things in the broadest possible sense” I include such radically different items as not only “cabbages and kings,” but numbers and duties, possibilities and finger snaps, aesthetic experience and death. To achieve success in Philosophy would be, to use a contemporary turn of phrase, to “know one's way around” with respect to all these things, not in that unreflective way in which the centipede of the story knew its way around before it faced the question, “how do I walk?”, but in that reflective way which means that no intellectual holds are barred.

--Sellars, Philosophy and the Scientific Image of Man.

...The ultimate business of philosophy is to preserve the force of the most elementary words in which Dasein expresses itself from being flattened by the common understanding to the point of unintelligibility, which in turn functions as a source of pseudo- problems.

    --Heidegger, Sein und Zeit

A philosopher--is a human being who constantly experiences, sees, hears, suspects, hopes, and dreams extraordinary things; who is struck by his own thoughts as from outside, as from above and below, as by his [or 'her'] type of experiences...A philosopher--alas, a being that often runs away from itself, often is afraid of itself--but too inquisitive not to 'come to' again--always back to himself"

    --Nietzsche, BGE, #292.

The results of philosophy are the uncovering of one or another piece of nonsense and bumps that the understanding has got by running its head up against the limits of language. These bumps make us see the value of the discovery.

    --Wittgenstein, PI, #119

If one tried to advance theses in philosophy, it would never be possible to debate them, because everyone would agree

    --Ibid, #128

Problem: Bill Clinton was in the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown. As someone with several friends there, and who almost went to Georgetown, I can say with a high level of confidence that the SFS does not offer a Philosophy degree. Sorry.

so the next time someone gives me shit about my wasted liberal arts education i'll just say "hey, bruce fuckin lee was a philosophy major, so shut yer pie hole!"

I would say that the thing they have in common is that they are notorious for something other than philosophy. Especially the pope, not much philosophy going on there.

Have you ever actually read what John Paul II wrote, Andyo? You may not be a Catholic, or even a theist, but I urge you to read a bit of his work.

    Woody never graduated. Sorry.

Well, the link suggests that Woody Allen and Willie Clinton "majored" in philosophy. This doesn't neccessarily imply that they hold degrees in said discipline. One can easily major in something without it culminating in a degree.

notorious for something other than philosophy...

That may be true, but Susan Sarandon tends to put me in a philosophical mood...

philosophy n the process by which simple things are explained in needlessly complicated terms

    antonym:

budhism n the process by which complicated things are explained in needlessly simple terms

"What is mind? No matter. What is matter? Never mind"

    • often attrib. to either John Gotti, or Homer Simpson, two great philosophers of the modern age

    they're all southpaws.
