Hey, anyone else noticed that the last couple of eps (after the hiatus) are especially hilarious? I don't see this ep as being more "offensive" than some others though. (The kid preacher one, for example, Christians are I think, just a bit more easily offended than Jews.)

Hmm...
Funny, yeah. but in the land of reality I'd want a different doctor too.
How would I know? I just spent 6 weeks in the Childrens Hospital. Every night. My daughter had open heart surgery when she was 3 days old.
Trust me, you don't settle for abusive doctors (or nurses, or ocupational therapists, or nurse practitioners) in the real world. We went with the best instead. And he was kind, humble, and had an excellent record.
Of course, that doesn't make good TV.
I've noticed that athiests are like religious people, and right wingers, and I suppose all humans.
They like to get behind a guy that is an arrogant smartass with good one liners.
That is how Bush got elected.
Should I mention the cult of personality of Rush, O'Reilly, most Televangelists (they zing those sinners good). This kind of admiration for the zing-slinger is no better than the Religious that refuse to understand athiethism, homosexuality, etc.
Be intelligent instead? House is fun, but be careful not to be like the Bad People. K?

Any theories on why FOX features both of network TV's most prominent atheists (House and Bones), as well as shows which satirize religion regularly (The Simpsons, Family Guy), yet FOX News is home to such religious kooks? Could it be that Rupert Murdoch - most like an atheist, but obviously a fiscal conservative - is just playing at having it both ways?
I'm genuinely wondering. What do ya'll think?

Yeah, it isn't about those issues at all, really. It's about the ratings, which leads to revenue. People watch O'Reilly not because he says things they like, but because they like the way he says them. It's good theater. The Fox audience wants to be entertained. Would the average viewer get anything at all out of CSpan?

I'm not going to say that you are universally wrong, obviously you are not, but Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris and Dan Dennet really don't fall in this category. And Hitchens while beeing everything but mild is hardly a man of punchy oneliners.
Who are these men that atheists get behind?

Robert, there's a Simpsons clip that illustrates this perfectly ... except it was taken down from Youtube because of the copyright claims.
Kent Brockman is out of a job and is staying at the Simpson's home. Homer, Lisa and Kent are watching FOX TV; a new reality show is being released.
NEW ON FOX. See if fifteen strippers can fly their own aircraft in the new reality series: Landing Strip!
Hey Laaaadies! Look what i can do with the airbags (attached to her push-up bra)
Homer: wow, this is what TV is all about. Real people with real problems.
(Changes the channel to FOX Noise)
Today on FOX News with the latest LIBERAL OUTRAGE. In Washington today, LIBERALS want to CHANGE the rules to allow NASA astronauts to ABORT space missions whenever they feel like it!
Homer: ooh! Liberals ... I hate them so much.
Lisa: Kent, I've never understood why FOX can have such conservative views yet air such raunchy shows.
(Changes to Landing Strip)
Homer: Woo Hoo!
(Changes to FOX Noise)
LIBERALS HATE FAMILIES!
Homer: Liberals!
(Changes to Landing Strip)
Homer: Woo Hoo!
(Changes to FOX Noise)
Homer: Liberals!
... rinse and repeat ...

MD Prime,
I've often asked myself that very question that Robert posed.
"Rinse and repeat"... lol..
That explains it. More mindless controversy to entertain all of Mercans... sigh..

If House ever has a theological conversion, it will be the last episode I ever watch.
I was a little concerned earlier this season when they were treating the guy who just wanted to die to end his life-long illness so he could revel in the paradise of the afterlife. House almost killed himself trying to get to the edge of death and see what was "there." During the final scene with House in the morgue with the corpse, I thought we were going to get some sort of "there's something out there" mysticism. Thankfully, we got House, and none of the sappy palliative of a religious otherworld.

thanks, mdprime, for clearing that up. that explains, at least, what's going on in the minds of those viewers who watch both heads of foxs' schizoid beastie. but what about the board of directors, the money boys, foxs' "ministry of truth"- are we to understand their sole concern is RATINGS?
it really does boggle the mind that simpsons fans-i mean those who really appreciate both the layered, often subtle humor, and the perspective of the show, especially the political and cultural commentary aspects- and faux news fans- who must really be gullible and shallow- can be the same people.
maybe the fox overlords should be credited with the discovery- or, creepily- the creation of such a demographic.

then again, i wouldn't want to leave out a tribute to the simpsons writers, who, along with their brilliance and subtlety have managed to overlay a sheen of "bang!pow!yuk yuk yuk!" on their, um...cartoon... which is 100% acceptable entertainment to the mentally challanged and "three stooges" fans of all ages. and bang, pow, yuk yuk yuk isn't a bad description of faux news...

I hate to interject this, but the folks I've met who take FOZ noise seriously think The Simpsons is tripe.

Of course Fox and Fox news don't have the same viewers. I even think the Fox network itself has a great variety of viewers. People who watch the Simpsons, Family Guy (yeah, I said it), House, used to watch Futurama, Arrested Development, etc., are not the same people who watch the reality shows. Fox has had the most varied programming for years now, and as long as they keep bringing the truly good shows that nobody else would dare (AD, FG, House), I don't care if they bring the raunchy for others to watch.
What comes of it, though, is the cancellation of shows like Futurama and Family Guy because they keep moving the schedules, and arguably people have it hard to find their shows, and instead they get something completely different.

As usual, The Simpsons has all the answers. ;)
Still, I think FOX showing shows about skydiving strippers is different than having two shows with outspoken atheists. Why? Both Bones and House are always demanding empirical evidence for everything and scoffing at religion - yet their the shows ostensible heroes.

I'm pretty anti-religion and yet I have to say I don't think that clip was a shining example of athiesm at work.
If I had a doctor who's idea of the scientific method was to bluster and huff over how I live my life and use that as a method of diagnosis I'd ask for a new one just two seconds after hanging him by the nose on my IV hook.
The fact that he reached a diagnosis based upon a subjective interpretation of someones life decisions isn't negated because that person happened to be a religious wackjob. Let's face it, life decisions are nearly always more complex than what was protrayed. Using that as a diagnostic tool is not the shining example of medical reason.
So, in the end, the clip is whitty, funny, and a good jab at religion but comes up short because it fails to show what atheism really should be about, reason and logic. Instead it simply stoops to picking on religious people. It's fun to do, but it doesn't show why I think atheism is a superior worldview.
