Yeah it's George Bush Jr. who's getting the pass here...I can't believe were not going to impeach this man. It's mind blowing...
Someone please clue me in on why Bush hasn't long since been impeached, and apparently won't be.
All honesty here, I haven't a clue. It doesn't seem like anyone in the world could have a legitimate reason for his lack of impeachment.
Townhall.com - terrific site, eh? Your home for deep incisive analysis.
I think it's probably because the people who want to impeach are wondering why the hell don't they impeach this motherfucker? Mainly, spineless democrats won't take the plunge. But that's my opinion, I could be wrong.
Why no impeachment?
Few politicians in either party have much interest in the rule of law. For every Feingold or Dodd in the Democratic party willing to go to the mat in the interest in preserving something resembling a democratic republic , there are Pelosis and Reids who are operating on the basis of a political calculation that impeachment will backfire and the GOP will claim that the Democrats are 'playing politics' or are seeking to undermine our commander in chief as he protects us from the 'terrists'. The GOP is even worse - there are no Howard Bakers in the GOP any more and the Democrats know that. The Democrats think - and probably they're right - that no matter what they bring to light during impeachment hearings, no Republicans will ever vote to impeach or convict Bush or Cheney. The GOP values only power and a kind of sycophantic perversion of 'loyalty' that would demand the obliteration of any Republican who admitted that Bush or Cheney are guilty as sin. In other words, in the GOP loyalty to party transcends loyalty to the the Constitution. The media is now so corrupted that a big chunk of it - Murdoch outlets and his Moonie-owned pals at the Washington Times - will propagandize unashamedly for Bush. Most of the rest of the media will treat an impeachment like they treat an election - as a personality contest. This ensures that public outrage is unlikely to gain momentum during an impeachment trial - and even if it does, it will not be reported as a phenomenon that extends beyond the 'far-left'.
Look at McCain - the GOP considers him to be a 'maverick' and the GOP establishment hates him. And for what? A few minor heresies (McCain-Feingold, a relatively nonpartisan view of pork-barrel piggery, and a willingness to state that pharmaceutical lobbyists wrote Bush's drug plan). He can't even get back into the good graces of the Godbot faction of the GOP despite his long-standing anti-abortion stance and his groveling to Falwell.
To summarize: The Democrats think that impeachment won't work and that they'll pay a political price for trying. The GOP maintains the mindset that Bush is a monarch and it doesn't matter what he does as long as he's a GOP monarch - neither much care about the rule of law and the importance of reining in the imperial presidency run amok.
seeing as none of those people are worth commenting on can i just take this opportunity to say WJC is dead to me. call me Brutus if you will, but i feel better, let's move on.
"We had the internet, and it ran on Steam!"
I was wondering how we used to get information through the series of tubes, ya know, before dumptrucks.
A more relevant question: what impeachable offenses can be proven?
I hear an awful lot of left-wing rhetoric about 'impeachable offenses' and 'war crimes', yet when pushed nobody is able to define anything that fits those labels. And I'm not saying that to be contentious - I really want to know. What did I miss? Where is the impeachable offense?
i second calligraphs question.
ive heard a lot of "mass murderer" and "liar", but you could also loosely attribute those to many, say eg franklin roosevelt and pearl harbor/world war two.
of course im not trying to put the big D and dubya in the same league, but im saying you need something as populistically (if thats even a word) catchy as a cigar and an improper use of it on interns. does someone have some data or recollection of what other presidents were impeached and on what grounds?
Clinton was impeached for perjury. Disregarding whether or not you care that he was getting a BJ while sending our troops to war, or bombed a pharmaceutical plant to distract us from his lying, he did actually break a law.
Bush has done some shady things but as far as I know he's always managed to skirt illegality. But I could be wrong. He does use 'executive privilege' a lot, but I imagine if Clinton could have used that magic wand he'd have been all over it, too. Odd that it doesn't cover perjury, or that he didn't invoke it to avoid having to testify.
Regarding grounds for impeachment:

More on the specific manner in which Bush violated the law in ordering wiretaps in violation of the FISA law: Bush's impeachable offense
calligraph, of course he broke a law. but you're not telling me, he would have been impeached without the lewinsky scandal. my point is you need something as catchy as that, even if for many european countries laughable, to get the masses (population, politics and above all the media) behind something like that.
The reason why bush "skirts illegality" is because he keeps talking about how the president needs to be above the law.
I'm sorry, but warrantless wiretapping was illegal when it was implemented by the bush administration. Even "Let the Eagles Soar" Ashcroft knew this and why he wouldn't sign off on the program, while he was sick in the hospital. The FISA courts are there for a reason, not for decoration.
Also, international laws have been violated. The Geneva convention comes to mind. Go watch "taxi to the dark side", about a man beaten to death by soldiers while in captivity.
250+ lies about the iraq invasion seems to be a high crime to me.
