- Big Pharma Spends More On Advertising Than Research And Development, Study Finds
Thus, the study’s findings supports the position that the U.S. pharmaceutical industry is marketing-driven and challenges the perception of a research-driven, life-saving, pharmaceutical industry, while arguing in favour of a change in the industry’s priorities in the direction of less promotion, according to Gagnon and Lexchin.

- Pope calls for continuous prayer to rid priesthood of paedophilia -Times Online WTF they think praying after the fact will work any better than the prayers they offered before. How many times will they conduct this experiment and fail before they realize it will never work.
Pope Benedict XVI has instructed Roman Catholics to pray “in perpetuity” to cleanse the Church of paedophile clergy. All dioceses, parishes, monasteries, convents and seminaries will be expected to organise continuous daily prayers to express penitence and to purify the clergy.

Vatican officials said that every parish or institution should designate a person or group each day to conduct continuous prayers for the Church to rid itself of the scandal of sexual abuse by clergy. Alternatively, churches in the same diocese could share the duty. Prayer would take place in one parish for 24 hours, then move to another.
Vatican watchers said that there was no known precedent for global prayer on a specific issue of this kind. There are about one billion Roman Catholics worldwide.

Here we go again... Damn scientists and academics just don't understand that all those ad dollars are to help educate Ameircans on how to better their health. I mean, I trust my TV over some smarty-pants doctor any day.
And they just don't understand how prayer fixes everything. The environment, crime, teen pregnancy... well, it doesn't fix our ailments - that's what pharmaceuticals are for.
In all seriousness, great posts Norm. I've already forwarded on links to numerous friends and family.

The unadulterated version of the Lynch clip is off of his "Inland Empire" DVD, if anyone cares. It's worth checking out.

So instead of praying for an end to worldwide poverty and starvation, or a cure for cancer, they're organizing one billion people to pray for... sexually repressed church-perverts to stop groping little boys.
Funny, here I thought preventing child abuse was a matter of community awareness, but no, lets all just shut ourselves in our homes, close our eyes, and wish very very hard...

hahah david lynch thing was funny. The elephant man was a great movie. Gotta love the rudy video too. And jesus man, 47% of americans dont believe in evolution? What is the % in england like 1%? and theres not much to say about the pedophile thing, but I'm sure it is god just testing them with little boys. Who the hell could still be catholic after all this ? besides nambla? and my retarded family members?
As for the britain thing, I cannot believe the answer to our problems is socialized medicine and more welfare. Doesn't welfare keep people poor? Nobody besides Bush will try to argue with you that we don't have problems, I'm just not sure what the best route is to fix them. A big factor is the value of the dollar, and it has been dropping steadily. Prices will go up and the money in your savings account is disappearing.

To Brian:
"Despite all the intense media propaganda, and despite the fact that evolution has been taught in school biology to the exclusion of all other theories for decades in the UK’s government-run schools, apparently only 48% of the British public actually believe evolution, according to an Ipsos MORI poll conducted for the BBC, published on 26th January 2006.1 Conversely, 17% said they believed in intelligent design, with 22% saying they believed in creation. The remainder did not know."

I'll say it again: prohibit all kinds of advertising in all businesses.
Advertising is bad for business, since they are forced to pay for their own lies to keep up with their competitors' lies. And it's bad for consumers who in the end pay the bill, get more inferior products and don't even get to choose the best product that's available on the marked because they're blinded by advertising.
No-ads is good for everyone, except the advertising industry, but it needs to be administered top-down, because it's something the marked can choose on it's own. Why? Because the first company to stop advertising voluntarily will loose it's business. It's not a strategy that rewards pioneers. But if all companies stopped advertising at the same time, they'd all gain and so would we.

The 'Head On' commercial comes to mind. I don't even watch television, and I've seen it. NBC called it "simple, dopey and annoying". Hmmm, could they be talking about the commercial, or those that actually buy it.

Edwards yesterday was talking about how we need Science, and how the president has rejected any science that doesn't agree with his ideology. He's the first candidate i've heard openly talk about "science". Obama has mentioned Technology, but not science directly (that I know of).

cmflyer,
It's simple. Science allows you to know about the world in the classical sense of the word. Evidence, facts, that kind of thing. Religion allows you to know things that are obviously a complete load of crap, but never the less true, since they are written in a magic book, or possibly embroidered in the lining of your magic undies.

This whole praying thing strikes me as a little petulant. If this god being has a plan, as the church always states whenever something bad happens, then surely he wants these priests to be kiddy fiddlers. The terrible damage done to their victims is surely all part of his divine plan. God moves in monstrous ways.
More seriously, the senior management of the catholic church knew that some of its priests were paedophiles and sort to cover it up. Can someone explain to me why they aren't being prosecuted as accessories? I imagine extradition might be a little tricky, but that really isn't a good excuse.

I don't know, it seems pretty plausible to me that within a trillion years someone might invent a 10-foot phone that can play video. Especially since, you know, the earth won't be here for the most part of those trillion years, and if there were any survivors in space, the (lack of) gravity might allow it to even be portable.
By the way, Lynch is a Transcendental Meditation (a.k.a. "close your eyes and relax, and yeah, pay us money for the privilege") proponent, I don't know if he's a nut or if he's just in for the money. Not that it makes his video less funny, but still. Made me feel kinda good that I was the one that didn't "get" Mulholland Dr.. Though that was probably my fault for not paying attention past the lesbian scenes.

Well, that's what I was told by two of my female friends, which coincidentally were the only ones that "got" it. I was just too upset that they censored the dirty parts.
