Hillary Wins
Damn, that's the best Hillary has sounded in a long time. The reason, she's adopted John Edwards populist message.

Don't look into her eyes.
She does NOT feel your pain.
Oh, and that crying farce.
Are the voters of NH really that gullible? She has no regret on her vote for the Iraq war. She doesn't regret her wardrumming against Iran. She serves the corporations.
The Mainstream media will play up this irrelevent victory in a very unrepresentative state at the expense of John Edwards and the American people. The media will ignore for now the profound dislike in the American people. Just let ANY republican candidate go against her. They will bring real tears to Hillary's eyes through their effective advertising and propaganda campaign. It is not enough that Hillary adopt the posture of a populist platform.
She will go down. We have to take her down.
I don't personally think the welling of tears was staged. Too risky; could have backfired. Even Clinton is a human. I'm not a fan, but even a broken clock is right twice a day. Or real.
But I do wish NH had taken her down. Even if she'd lost she wouldn't be out of the race: too much clout, too much backing. But I do wish Edwards would win one, or come consistently in second to either Clinton or Obama, to keep his candidacy viable. Winning South Carolina is not a given, but even if he wins there, it will be easy to dismiss it as Southern candidate wins Southern state: doesn't count.
Miles to go. I'm with you, Norm: let the battle continue.
I watched both her and Obama, and I still cannot feel enthusiasm for her. She kept looking at her notes, it was distracting.
They both received 9 delegates tonight. Good. A longer primary season can only benefit the voters.
Hillary will not win any more states than Gore or Kerry. Obama has greater upside potential.
It used to be that it was only people with money who could be the President of the United States. If Hillary wins this year (and gets a second term) the White House will have been the personal property of two families for 28 years - now would THAT be a dynasty! And in 2016 - who's for Jeb Bush?
This is, by a wide margin, the most exciting campaign of my lifetime. Clearly, it is still anyones game.
I was happy to see BOTH Obama and Edwards trump Clinton in Iowa. Considering the polls (Obama + >10%), I was VERY surprised to see Clinton win tonight.
Super Tuesday can't come soon enough!
Not sure what she means by "found her own voice." Was there some transformation in her campaigning style that I missed? With all her vaunted experience, is she saying she hadn't found her voice until now when the chips were down?
In any case, winning NH must be a huge relief and confidence booster, and I'm sure we'll hear that in her voice. It'll be interesting, that's for sure.
Living up to one's god-given potential? I got what I have from my parents, not some old man in the sky. Why does everything have to be god-laced?
That says alot about how bad bush is when people will support this bitch.
voted for iraq war...check voted for patriot act....check voted to go to war with iran....check
arent those three things enough to turn almost any liberal or even real conservative off of her? depending on which party you consider the nation building party.
Anyone who refers to Hillary "crying" has completely discredited themselves and shown that they are misogynists.
BTW, today, January 9th is the 100th anniversary of Simone de Beauvoir.
Of course that doesn't mean much to most Americans, especially the wingnuts. But they might just look up "The Second Sex" to be less clueless.
I'm shocked at the misogynistic comments coming from a supposedly progressive blog. "Bitch"? Are you kidding me? That is an oppressive term used to marginalize any woman who dares seek power or control or success. Please don't use it, it's on par with nigger these days. She faked the brief moment where she appeared to (slightly) choke up? Again, where do you all come up with this stuff? Clinton and Obama's voting record are the same 90% of the time. Why not the irrational hatred and venom towards him? You should ask yourselves that.
Well said Mamba.
This speech made me look forward to the future of America, not dread it. (platitudes I know, but it's been a long time since america didn't feel like in a economic/human rights freefall.)
Any Democrat (besides Richardson) is the right direction. None are perfect, it's the nature of the game. I'm happy these are our choices, as opposed to 2004, when every democratic hopeful was pretty weak.
Clinton couldn't have possibly won in NH because the media told me the election was over and Obama won everything and is now our President. Headlines screamed that the Clinton legacy is over and people rejected her for being the status quo Democrat. So clearly any news story that suggests that there is still candidates other than Obama and Huckabee are all lies.
LOL
OMG Somebody said bitch, sound the alarms. Not everybody is as pc obsessed as you, but a lot of liberals are. I wouldnt vote for that douchebag obama either(happy now?), but I will give him the credit for atleast having the few firing brain cells it would take to know iraq would be a quagmire, even though he wasnt in the position to vote for it, I dont think.
But im pretty sure he voted for the patriot act as well. Some version if not the original. I think he voted against the iran war build up though. So you say they vote the same 90% of the time, maybe that is an important 10%.
I'm not sure obama isnt corrupt but I know for damn sure that Bitch hillary clinton is.
Face it. Hillary has bigger cojones than her opponents!
This isn't about whether you would vote for Clinton or Obama or whoever. It's about your misogynism. Bitch. It's an expression of pure sexism -- and it expresses a hope that you can shut up not only one woman but every woman who dares to be assertive. Simply put: If you don't like Clinton's stance on say, Iraq, there are plenty of ways to say so without invoking her gender. TIA.
I also find it funny that you use something originally associated with women (douchebag) to insult Obama. You just can't help it, can you?
but but... the bitch cried and got all girly and so all the women came out of the kitchen and voted.
(i'm sorry, I couldn't help myself)
Sorry Mamba, it just wouldn't sound right to call her a prick. Acknowledging the sex of the person you are insulting does not make you sexist.
Come to think of it, calling her a prick would not only be insulting her generally, but also use phallic symbolism to deny her femininity.
Nearly all insulting terms have some gender association. Many languages like French and Spanish actually assign gender to words. The only way to avoid the label of sexist from overly sensitive activists would be to avoid all name calling. That would be good. Fantasy, but good.
I don't consider terms like prick or dick halfway as loaded as the terms bitch or the C-word. Until we hear terms like prick-slapped, son of a prick, riding prick, etc. I will not believe that bitch is not supposed to be a term of female subordination. And if you think using a term like bitch to insult her is OK because it retains her femininity then I don't think you understand the meaning of the word to women.
An op/ed in regards to the gauntlet of anonymous misogynism Hillary Clinton is facing on the web:
"No woman has run quite the same gantlet. And of course, no man.
Thanks to several thousand years of phallocentric history, there is no comparable vocabulary of degradation for men, no equivalently rich trove of synonyms for a sexually sullied male. As for the word beginning with C? No single term for a man reduces him to his genitals to such devastating effect."
People who use such words as bitch, slut, c_nt to describe Clinton sound equally as ignorant as those who accuse Obama of being Muslim because of his middle name.
My only intention here was to register my disgust, not turn this into a women's studies class. In the end, the term says more about the person who used it than it does about the person they were intending to insult.
I can see your points Mamba, and even agree with you to some extent. What I think you may be missing is how those words are used by different cultures. In my lilly-white world, the word bitch usually only means a woman who has behaved in ways that piss off others.
Right.
Except the majority of insults used in american culture have to do with women or femininity (as brian showed above). The fact that women are being denegrated/objectified as animals (fox, bitch, bunny), their female body parts are used as insults (disproportionately to male parts), or turned into objects altogether (meat) makes this an issue.
Can you still speak this way? Yes. Is it going to affect how people see you? Absolutely.
Thanks BlackMamba. I'm a lily-white Canadian woman who views OGM and reads these comments because I feel as if they give me a perspective on American politics and society that I just don't get from the mainstream media. I have never commented before but I'd like to add my voice to yours. You are spot on in your analysis of the misogynistic intent of the term 'bitch' as well as 'douche bag' even though it was applied to a male. (And by the way, my whole world may not be lily-white, but it certainly is the lighter shade of beige, Syngas.)
Easily offended people offend me.
Wow.. this is a complex topic..
I don't have a problem with using words such as "cunt" and "prick" and "scum bag" per se.. I will admit to using them all myself at one time or another and at times telling someone "fuck you" is just irresistible.
However, wearing my feminist hat, I have noticed that when a man is promiscuous, he's a stud, while a woman is a slut. If a man is aggressive, he has balls, while if a woman is aggressive, she's a bitch.
However, that said, most of the men I've ever met are not sexist and pretty cool. But that is most men, not all men...
And, even more puzzling that the terms used as pertains to men's or women's sexuality is the fact that we use our sexuality as put down... that's what befuddles me more than anything. Why do we use something so natural and something that we all derive pleasure from to put each other down? Why do we use our sexuality as an insult? I think it derives from our puritan tendancies..
Well I didnt invent the english language and create more feminine puts downs that male puts down so dont get mad at me. Nor have I held women back, for thuosands of years. To think i would be the slightest offended if one person called another person a prick, dick or cock is insane. you must have some inferiority complex, or just have something stuck up your ass. Im sorry if some guy screwed you over so now anytime somebody says the word bitch you go on a tirade about the history of humans and how women have been held back all these years. But hey i cuss all the time, get used to it. I use fag homo queer gay all the time, and it doesnt have anything to do with actually being gay. Bitch is just the one I happened to use, it coulda been anything, but i was trying to keep it remotely clean.
Just to make you happy Ill call her a dickhead. Is that acceptable? Or a lying corrupt scumbag piece of shit? A two faced corporate sellout? A deceitful evil robotic alien ?
hmmmmmm... that's weird... I don't get it. But then there's a lot about humans that I don't understand. I wonder how many people care to delve into the psychological aspects of what we say and how we act...
So, here's to continuing the 3rd decade of the same 2 families in charge.
"Im sorry if some guy screwed you over so now anytime somebody says the word bitch you go on a tirade about the history of humans and how women have been held back all these years."
Because any woman with a feminist thought in her head must be some hairy armpit man-hater? You have some serious stereotypes to work through dude. I won't even get into the other words you deem acceptable. Judging from your posts I calculate a very low probability of getting through to you. Lesson learned.
I have noticed that when a man is promiscuous, he's a stud, while a woman is a slut.
It just depends on ones attitude, I guess. As far as I'm concerned, this '72 virgins' reward in paradise is bullshit - who the hell wants virgins?
This dinasty thing is just bullshit. A red-herring to avoid discussion of issues. Conspiracy theory crap from people who somehow put the Bushs and the Clintons in the same family. Well, they're not.
It's not the Clintons' problem that the Reps don't have any presidential material outside the Bush family. The Democrats have plenty of that outside the Clinton family. As this race shows.
The left's hatred for Hillary is as irrational as the right's hatred for her. To paint her as some kind of right wing Democrat vis-a-vis the alleged progressives Obama and Edwards is ridiculous. On 90 percent of things they aggree with each other. I mean, Edwards voted for this dreadful Iraq resolution, too, remember? And before you get all worked up: I'm an Edwards supporter.
But Obama hadn't been there in 2002. Are you so sure he'd have voted against the resolution? I'm not.
Come on, folks, this is a great race! We have three brilliant candidates, as candidates go. Of course, they're not as good as the ones in West Wing. But this is the reality. And I didn't think I'd still live the day when Democrats would turn out 2:1 compared to Republicans, and would present three viable people who would wipe the Reps' asses?
What this race shows so far is: The. Republicans. Are. Toast. Period. That's fine with me.
In the mean time: Go, John!!
"Because any woman with a feminist thought in her head must be some hairy armpit man-hater?"
No but any woman offended by me calling another woman a bitch, which really was just a random insult, and starts complaining because more feminine insults exist has some issue with something.
"It just depends on ones attitude, I guess. As far as I'm concerned, this '72 virgins' reward in paradise is bullshit - who the hell wants virgins?"
are they hot?
Look i can see you being offended if you like her, just because I called her anything, but I didnt mean it to be anything against all women, so relax. Sorry for offending you.
But Obama hadn't been there in 2002. Are you so sure he'd have voted against the resolution? I'm not.
On the whole, I think the Democratic field is the best in many years - if Hillary is nominated, I'll vote for her, even if I lack enthusiasm. The failure of the Democrats has been in letting the right define their leaders. Howard Dean is routinely described in the media as 'far-left' - why? He was a very reasonable, level-headed governor. He mainstream guy who called Bush's war stupid when it counted. The FOX noise machine labeled him as a defeatocrat and and as a 'leftie' for no other reason that I can discern. And it has stuck - I don't even see Democrats contesting that characterization when it is applied even today.
Speaking of enthusiasm, this word comes from the Greek 'entheos', which means "God in us"..
Or according to this source
ORIGIN Greek enthousiasmos, from enthous ‘possessed by a god’
Or according to this source
Enthusiasm: An exaggerated state of religious fervor or reliance on divine inspiration. Enlightenment philosophers such as Locke and Leibniz decried manifestations of enthusiasm as incompatible with the proper employment of rational faculties.
Hillary and Obama are the same horrible candidate...John Edwards is our only hope right now it seems to getting someone in the white house who will try to change things. Hillary and Obama will do nothing to change what is happening in the middle-east. The arguments they make about how they are both so different from one another are beyond amusing, it's not even arguing semantics anymore, it's just comedy.
We need to stop supporting these two, because John Edwards needs all of our help if he's going to win!
I love the line she gives, "...Over the past months I have listened to you, and in the process I have found my own voice."
That is the biggest line of political bullshit I have ever heard, what that basically suggests here(with out knowing it) is that she listened to the people, and then decided that she needed to make her voice sound more like there's. In some cases it has a southern draw to it, sometimes it has a hint of ebonics to it as well, and at other times it speaks as though it has made no real decision on Iraq or the other important issues of the day at ALL! Both sides of every issue sound appealing to Hillary Clinton, because they both may get her elected...what a joke!
Please stop supporting this woman, once again John Edwards needs our help.
brian: It's not that you invented these words, it's the fact that you use them with no real connection to what you are really saying. Calling something you find dumb "gay" is you saying that gay=dumb (or at least that's what your language says).
Those are great, relevant insults.
Hey, I'm just trying to help you insult better, without looking like a total mysogynist asshole.
Hey! Women have assholes! Stop using women's body parts to denigrate people. Lest you be judged a mysogynist prick ;-)
"So, here's to continuing the 3rd decade of the same 2 families in charge."
Ahem apologies if that sounds like a conspiracy rant to those of you who are clearly reading too much into a statement of fact.
I am merely pointing out that it would be nice to see someone in the whitehouse who ISN'T a BUSH or a CLINTON.
boo fucking hoo/
Ill 2nd that no more clintons, or bushies
i'll 3rd the no more clintons or bushes. (hey, that's sexist!) :D
I'll 4th the no Jeb or Pierce Bush Ever Ever!!
Prez Chelsea Clinton, on the other hand...
