Countdown w/Keith Olbermann
Keith's latest book is Truth and Consequences: Special Comments on the Bush Administration's War on American Values

So... is Olbermann deriding the humour whilst simultaneously presenting it to me to laugh at and enjoy?

Good to see people are taking seriously the death and misery inflicted on millions by the Bush Administration. Nor would anyone think it good joke material that we now live with a nagging fear of getting sent to a secret prison for 10 years with no requirement for anyone to check and make sure it's not a mistake or an abuse of power.

...

No war crimes tribunal, no impeachment, no civilian mobilization, no protests in the mainstream media, nobody even paying attention.

So let's crack some jokes instead, you fucking whores.

Wow. I saw "George Bush declares Martial Law and I nearly flicked on the TV. I think I've become a bit too cynical.

Frenetic,

Do you hate the Daily Show too? I thik satire is a good thing. It's one of the greatest ways to educate folks about things they'd normally never listen to.

I agree the problems they make fun of are serious but since no one in the media seems to be saying much, it was good of the comedians to illustrate it the best way their talents can. And obviously it worked since it got the message of fixed elections, New Orleans flooding, greed and our Administration's corruption all a spot on MSNBC. Now if only the talking poodles of American "Journalism" would actually take these issues seriously we'd be getting somewhere.

Normally I'm pretty tolerant of satire but after so many years of this shit I'm losing my patience.

I think joking about this sort of thing while its still going on is taking it a bit far. And I know the fuckers who made this video are going to pat themselves on the back for such biting wit, go home, and sit back and watch fake heroes save fake people on TV... while in the meantime, the illicit war rages on, and people keep starving and dying.

There comes a point where you really wonder if people actually enjoy being gradually enslaved while their "elected leader" spills rivers of blood half a world away. That would explain why they find it so amusing, and sit back and do nothing. Some of these satirists probably don't even vote.

So so wrong but so so so so funny. Thanks Norm!

I'm with you, Frenetic. I didn't find this funny, but disgraceful. I feel ashamed to know that I am a part of it whether I like it or not.

Ever since Aristophanes political satire has been an invaluable tool in bringing about change.

Humor gets a message across that is often disregarded because it is too horrible or otherwise unthinkable,

I think it was Steve Martin who said it best…"Comedy isn't pretty".

Frenetic:

I feel your pain. Really, I do.

However, to borrow from Abe Lincoln, I laugh because I fear that should I stop laughing, I would cry.

Frenetic I'm sick of this shit too! I would have thought that by now we would have impeached this man, or at least ended this war and have Bush on trial for impeachment, or war crimes, or at LEAST under investigation...or SOMETHING!!!

I do believe that the Democrats that we reelected are very much to blame for the current state that we are now in...I do not agree with there strategy on how they are dealing with the War...I think they should have just flat out stopped funding it. That is what congress has the power to do, to control the purse strings, and unfortunately they are not doing their job. :(

Frenetic: fair enough. but I am glad Keith aired this, I had seen it before and was equally shocked. The second time I realised how sick it is, how provoking, how nauseating it is to laugh at... and then I realised what a work of art it is. You cannot be any more sarcastic in trying to shake the sleeping airheads out of their daze. I applaud the creators at blip.tv for a disgusting, yet very real experience.

I think what we all need to realize is that the problem isn't liberal or conservative. It is a government with nobody to answer to, that can do whatever it wants. Because one day I promise you we will see the same bs coming from a democrat, and whos to blame then?

satire |ˈsatʌɪə| noun - the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.

Why do the talking poodles of American "Journalism" NOT actually take these issues seriously? Because the majority of the country actually pay to listen to what they DO say - in newspapers, on TV and Talk Radio. That's what Democracy is all about - the will of the Majority! If the Majority are f*ckwits then.... Hard Luck, you live in a system that allows One Person One Vote (note the PC terminology).

I think what we all need to realize is that the problem isn't liberal or conservative.

Sorry to be so abrasive, but what was your first clue, Sherlock?

It is a government with nobody to answer to, that can do whatever it wants. Because one day I promise you we will see the same bs coming from a democrat...

Getting elected into Congress and then doing zilch to counteract any of the Bush Admin's damage pretty much counts as "the same BS" in my book. All that is required for evil to succeed, etc.

And doesn't anyone remember Lyndon Johnson? And Vietnam? And the "domino effect" propaganda? "If we allow Vietnam to fall, tomorrow we’ll be fighting in Hawaii, and next week in San Francisco." He even pushed government contracts to a company that would later merge with Halliburton!

Johnson was a Democrat.

I was saying early on after the Democrats got into Congress that it was evident that they were going to do shit all about Bush.

At that point I think I recall being told to stop being so cynical...

Someone once said

"It doesn't matter which party you vote for, the Government always gets elected."

This piece seems to neatly summarize what will be the Bush administration's legacy.

"Sorry to be so abrasive, but what was your first clue, Sherlock?"

hey fuck you asshole, i know it's common sense but most people just seem to be for democrats no matter what or for conservatives no matter what.

and yes johnson was a democrat but i was talking about in the future.

as for being cynical, can you really be too cynical about our government. or governments in general?

can you really be too cynical about our government. or governments in general?

Speaking as a fairly cynical guy, I'd say 'yes, you can be too cynical'. Anarchy is not an answer.

i know it's common sense but most people

...have no common sense. Yeah.

When I say "DUH" it means that I agree with you, but that the whole situation just pisses me off. It's nothing personal; I despise all humans equally. :)

Anarchy is not an answer.

Depends what you mean by "anarchy". IIRC, the literal meaning of the term just means "no ruler". Anarchy does not necessarily include removal of all social structures (indeed, this is impossible) it merely implies removal of the central ruling power of the State.

To put it provocatively, anarchy is to politics what atheism is to philsophy.
