You're An Idiot

The BEAST 50 Most Loathsome People in America, 2007
9. You

Charges: You believe in freedom of speech, until someone says something that offends you. You suddenly give a damn about border integrity, because the automated voice system at your pharmacy asked you to press 9 for Spanish. You cling to every scrap of bullshit you can find to support your ludicrous belief system, and reject all empirical evidence to the contrary. You know the difference between patriotism and nationalism -- it's nationalism when foreigners do it. You hate anyone who seems smarter than you. You care more about zygotes than actual people. You love to blame people for their misfortunes, even if it means screwing yourself over. You still think Republicans favor limited government. Your knowledge of politics and government are dwarfed by your concern for Britney Spears' children. You think buying Chinese goods stimulates our economy. You think you're going to get universal health care. You tolerate the phrase "enhanced interrogation techniques." You think the government is actually trying to improve education. You think watching CNN makes you smarter. You think two parties is enough. You can't spell. You think $9 trillion in debt is manageable. You believe in an afterlife for the sole reason that you don't want to die. You think lowering taxes raises revenue. You think the economy's doing well. You're an idiot.

Exhibit A: You couldn't get enough Anna Nicole Smith coverage.

Sentence: A gradual decline into abject poverty as you continue to vote against your own self-interest. Death by an easily treated disorder that your health insurance doesn't cover. You deserve it, chump.

My goodness, but that was cathartic. Thanks, Norm! My favorite was probably this one, because somebody needed to say it:

32. The Founding Fathers

Charges: Lionized as moral pillars and demigods ad nauseum without the slightest hint of irony. Can't be judged by today's standards. Electoral College? Dumb fucking idea. Invoked by every asshole in the last two hundred years to support every stupid idea ever. The original liberal elite. Able to withstand lightning strikes and the British military; unable to fathom poor people voting.

Exhibit A: Owned wigs, Africans.

Sentence: Depicted as cartoons on rapidly devaluing currency; beaten at effective democracy by former monarchies.

Over the holidays I rented Idiocracy and Sicko for my family to watch. It was amazing how some members were put off by Sicko stricktly bcause it was made by Michael Moore and just assumed it was all lies. Idiocracy was a hit though... talk about irony.

I found the list, what I read of it, to be in poor taste: adolescent, shallow, and written with a disturbing fascination with sex and violence. While I might vote the same way the author does, and I might have chosen many of the villains he chose, he certainly doesn't speak for me. He sounds like a pompous, self-righteous 17-year-old who likes preaching to the lowest common denominator of the masses gathered on the Left. Another victim of testosterone poisoning. Spare me.

Wow. This comes as a shock. Even after you were Time's man of the year. How far you have fallen.

Maybe it's the cold medicine, but I love this post and the ocmments that follow. Especially the one about Time's man of the year! Must click away now and read the whole article you extracted this from.

heh heh - very good!

I'm with Phidippides on this. Being "edgy" (a stupid but suitable term) has so assimilated into every crevasse of popular culture that it's simply cliche and intellectually numbing. It's actually a retrograde trend because you can't do good parody against a backdrop of such popularized vitriol. It just melts down into a kind of routine mean-spirited exercise, delivering over and over to a low-level form of catharsis.

On Romney's sentence: "Strapped to the roof of his family car, which his dog attempts to drive across the country, but crashes horribly (because dogs can't drive, of course). Romney's flesh burns off in the ensuing fire, revealing him to be a standard protocol droid set to world domination mode". --Lame! I agree on the Carson Daly assessment though.

I predict a new level in edgy/irreverent entertainment around the bend... A Comedy Central show called "Coliseum", where Religious Right-Wingers are thrown to lions. It'll be protected under fair-use laws as parody. It will serve as more cathartic red meat for "edgy" hipsters nation-wide (aka: rationalists). Hilarious. Cue laugh track and fish-eye lens shots of grotesque guffawing audience.

Chuck Norris: Doesn't understand evolution, despite access to mirrors.

hah! Loads of good lines there

Here's #14 interviewing asshole atheist-libertarian Penn Jillette:

http://tinyurl.com/27dsnk

Those of you who worship at the stinky feet of pro-Bush atheist Chrissie Snitchens should absolutely love Penn Jillette.

I found the whole list to be quite entertaining however, I think Norm that you might add a warning to this particular link: Not suitable for humorless holier-than-thou types.

Not suitable for humorless holier-than-thou types.

Norm, you could add this right after "I thought these things might be clues", but we'd miss T4T/calligraph...

I agree with Phidippides in being that it reads like some 17 year old popped up hormones and angry about everything in life.

While I agree with some, I disagree with most. I am conservative and a constitutionalist. It really disappoints me when a liberal such as this man, make wide and random judgments based on the zombie republican movement, that all law-abiding conservatives are to be hated and killed off.

There are people in my life who understand my perspectives only because they chose not to pre-judge my position.

Then again, there are some people in life that are hypocrites of the same bs they preach against.

It really disappoints me when a liberal such as this man, make wide and random judgments based on the zombie republican movement, that all law-abiding conservatives are to be hated and killed off.

It really disappoints me when zombie Republicans seem to dominate the Republican party. The GOP candidates are falling all over each other to come off as the biggest, baddest torturers on the block. When the GOP nominated and an absolute jackass for president in 2000,the zombies trooped to the polls and put him in office. Then Mr. Bush put in four of the worst years in American presidential history. The GOP zombie movement didn't even run anyone against him in the 2004 primaries. (Contrast the flack that Democrats gave to Johnson in 1968 and to Carter in 1980,) Bush proved just how big a jackass he was for four years - and zombie Republicans trooped to the polls and reelected him. So, when law-abiding conservatives decide that the rule of law is worth defending again - even when the law-breakers are Republicans - then they'll deserve something better than the sophomoric assault you are complaining about. As long as Republicans allow sanctimonious phonies and fanatics to team up with thieves to run their party, you can expect more of the same.

'You' made the list, but 'I' didn't. I demand a partial recount.

When the GOP nominated and an absolute jackass for president in 2000,the zombies trooped to the polls and put him in office.

While I don't agree with all of his policies, he was more of what I wanted for president than a radical enviromentalist or a flip-flopper in 2004. Bush is the President of the United States and 167 million Americans put him there. No matter what he has done in your perspective to be bad or not, he deserves respect to not be called a jackass.

The rule of law is being protected. Surely in ways you disagree, but according to all federal and state laws, the President has not broken any laws.

No matter what he has done in your perspective to be bad or not, he deserves respect to not be called a jackass.

the President has not broken any laws.

Hey, look there! Did you see the zombie trudging by?

Bush is a jackass.

Yes, I saw a zombie walking by and leaving stupid comments all over the damned place

I agree with Phidippides in being that it reads like some 17 year old popped up hormones and angry about everything in life.

Right, and not anything like the comments from this wise intellectual with his own "Myspace"...

Hey, look there! Did you see the zombie trudging by?

You must understand how this must look to me. You all have the same generalized opinion. From my perspective, you all look like the dead fish floating down stream and going with the flow of thought.

Its mind-blowing how interested you are in free-speech and freedom of thought. Yet when someone completely disagrees with you, you seem to resort to belittling your opponent.

Can you not resort to reasoned thought? Can we not simply disagree without bickering?

Or is this impossible for the zombies following popular thought?

In America when the people think the president is a Jackass, they have the right to say so. You have the right to diwsagree and others have the right to disagree with you.

The belitteling travels on a two way street, quit complaining when it comes back your way.

If you still support this radical idiot in the WH, then you are not a conservative, you are much closer to the neo-cons and they are not even slightly conservative in the traditional sense.

The man has destroyed the economy, burdened several generations with unbelievable debt, all funneled into corporate pockets, proved himself utterly incompitent to run a war or a civilian government.

But you demand he be spoken of with respect? Respect is also a two way street. This president respects no one who isn't filthy rich so oddly most of us have no respect for this little compulsive liar.

How much respect did you show Clinton when he was in? None at I, I suspect.

Repugs only demand respect for the office when a Repug is in office.

I remember the Clinton years and the foul mouthed republicans very well. The man with smeared with lies and inuendo from day one and you demand we respect a man who has damaged this country more than possibly any other president.

Clinton got a blowjob, Bush has fucked the entire country.

Respect is earned, even for presidents.

Respect is earned, even for presidents. Exactly.

The President is merely the most important among a large number of public servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to the degree which is warranted by his good or bad conduct, his efficiency or inefficiency in rendering loyal, able, and disinterested service to the Nation as a whole. Therefore it is absolutely necessary that there should be full liberty to tell the truth about his acts, and this means that it is exactly as necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him when he does right. Any other attitude in an American citizen is both base and servile. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than any one else. Theodore Roosevelt, May 7, 1918

Vovenant,

'Jackass' is one of the most polite terms that George Bush deserves. The list of the outrages for which this administration is responsible is so prodigious (http://www.netrootsmass.net/Hugh/Bush_list.html) that if you are still defending him at this late date then, frankly, you are hopeless. The droppings you've been depositing on this blog for the past several days are such that you really aren't worth arguing with. You've compared faith in God with faith in the reliable functioning of a chair. You've dealt with the story of Noah's Ark as if it presents questions that are unsusceptible to logical analysis. You've claimed that you're a 'Constitutionalist' and proceeded to defend a president whose entire time in office has been spent assaulting the Constitution. Presidents must earn respect - and so do you. Because of the blatant shallowness and silliness of the comments you've offered so far, I couldn't care less whether from your 'perspective, we all look like the dead fish floating down stream and going with the flow of thought.'

Its mind-blowing how interested you are in free-speech and freedom of thought. Yet when someone completely disagrees with you, you seem to resort to belittling your opponent.

The tenets of free speech are such that I am free to belittle you and you are free to respond by belittling me or with any other kind of response.

Reasoned thought, eh? Anyone who attempts to limit my free speech by saying, "No matter what he has done in your perspective to be bad or not, he deserves respect to not be called a jackass.", is himself a jackass.

This man, GWB has so destroyed our rights, our economy, and our military that he deserves to be called no less than a jackass.

And what reasoned thought have you presented? That we all bow down and respect this man who has destroyed our economy, our civil rights and our country in general? Is that your idea of reasoned thought? That we be submissive to the "commander in chief" and have respect for this idiot? Is that it?

Or is this impossible for the zombies following popular thought?

Popular thought eh? Well, 90% of Americans believe in God... that's "popular thought". Are you a theist zombie?

Are you simply some sort of gadfly who has nothing to say other than to contradict?

And please regale us all with some "reasoned thought". You have yet to do so.

Can we not simply disagree without bickering?

Okay, then... Please present your 'reasoned thought' for why you feel that GWB is to be respected. If you respond with reasoned thought, people will respond to you with "reasoned thought". If you throw out some other emotionally-charged bullshit, people will respond in kind.

But cut out the "free speech" bullshit. If I went to a Christian/conservative website and responded in the manner as you have here, what type of responses do you suppose I would have received?
