Freedom of Speech
I confess, the United States Bridge Federation is out of its mind, and Jan Martel is an idiot. She would make a fine addition to the Bush Administration, she has all the right attributes, especially her old-testament god-like disposition.
Anti-Bush Sign Has Bridge World in an UproarThe controversy has gone global, with the French team offering support for its American counterparts. The Nation weighs in, and if you want to send Jan Martel or the United State Bridge Federation an email the links are there.
"By trying to address these issues in a nonviolent, nonthreatening and lighthearted manner,” the French team wrote in by e-mail to the federation’s board and others, “you were doing only what women of the world have always tried to do when opposing the folly of men who have lost their perspective of reality."

So glad you posted this, Norm. I wrote to the USBF's board and Ms. Martel (you can find e-mail addresses on their web site, http://tinyurl.com/2ctue2) yesterday after seeing this story in the Times, and received the following response from Ms. Martel (I have used tinyurl.com to shorten the URLs; sorry, I don't know html):
Thank you for your email.
The USBF Board appreciates everyone's input. I and the other USBF Board members are not participating in discussions of the incident because it is inappropriate for us to do so. But I assure you that we are listening to everyone.
You can read a Summary of Board Actions at http://tinyurl.com/28vay5 and a Statement regarding the Damage to USBF at http://tinyurl.com/ywwssw
The links she provides are worth viewing. I tried to find Olbermann's e-mail, or Countdown's, but failed. It's nice to know that they saw and responded to it this way. It's appalling what such a minor action on the part of these women has ignited within the organization.
To think that they believe they have the right to abridge their victors' right to free speech! I hope this thing blows up in their faces. I've seen enough of this jingoistic crap.
Deleting my comments is enough for me to see your position on freedom of speech. (practically speaking that is, for all of us have wonderfully beautiful ideals.)
Should social darwinism not be addressed?
Keith has a good candidate for worst person in the world with this McCarthyite bitch Jan Martel.
Bravo for the French team publicly supporting the American team.
What comment was that?
Do you also claim your right to free speech is abridged if your letter to the editor is not published? There are rules for commenting here if a comment of yours was deleted it was because you violated one of those rules.
Shades of John Carlos and Tommie Smith's salute during the '68 Olympics, which promptly got them kicked out and permanently banned from the Olympics (and loads of death threats against themselves, as well as their family -- and a helluva lot of other outrageous, cowardly, fascist shit). “Shining city upon a hill," my ass. Tragically, the bit that follows that passage, "The eyes of all people are upon us..." is correct -- Australia took a hint from the US, and similarly mistreated one of their own athletes for having showed support for the two.
Perhaps we should waterboard these bridge ladies to see who funded the sign.
Well, ok, Norm.
In response to your link of the religious fanatics killing their family member through a ritual, I posted a link of a nonreligous fanatic shooting up his school in the name of social darwinism.
I see it was displayed after much deliberation...
If you had taken the time to register your comment would have appeared when you posted it. I suggest you read the commenting guidelines before making spurious charges. I simply don't have the time to check every five minutes to see if you or any other non-registered users has made a comment. I work full time in addition to maintaining this blog. Your comment was born of ignorance, next time leave your snark in your pocket and drop me an Email if you have a comment about how I administer this blog.
So nobody has a problem with the sexist nature of the comment? Why doesn't that surprise me.
Yeah, coz you know those ESPN bridge sponsors must be calling for the heads of the star, um, bridge players. If we play bridge, the turrrrrrrists win. Geez, this is unbelie....well, not unbelievable, but it's bad.
Exactly what comment was sexist?
