Griffin's 'offensive' Emmy speech to be censored
In her speech, Griffin said that "a lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus."
She went on to hold up her Emmy, make an off-color remark about Christ and proclaim, "This award is my god now!" (tip to John)
What off color remark?
"Can you believe this shit? I guess hell froze over. ... a lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award.via Defamer (tip to thaddeusphoenix)
"I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus. So, all I can say is, 'suck it, Jesus.' This award is my god now."

Bravo for Griffin.
Of course what she said will be censored. This doesn't surprise me in the least.
Oh, for fvck's sake. More of the kid gloves and stepping on eggshells and "reverence" we're supposed to have for religion.
In the end, Kathy Griffin will probably benefit from the extra attention.
"The comedian's remarks were condemned Monday by Catholic League President Bill Donohue, who called them a 'vulgar, in-your-face brand of hate speech.'"
H-hate speech? Seriously? Wow, uh, I have absolutely nothing to say to that.
LOL -
Donohue is such a moron. If he'd ever watched the show, he'd probably be offended if she'd thanked Jesus forhelping her win an award.

Good on Griffin. Donohue is one of the most odious magic-peddlers you see in the media these days. Any form of criticism is labeled hate crime, whereas a perverted hypocrite like "mother" Theresa is held up like a saint, and child molesting priests are defended and protected -- ditto for priests who roam AIDS-ridden African villages, telling them that condoms actually cause the disease...
YO, HEY! I found a Do-It-Yourself Deity!
You can build your own god! How cool is the internet?

The 'off color remark' was "suck it, Jesus." lol
About censorship. Here's a trailer for a movie for U.S. viewers.
And here's the trailer uncensored for the Swiss audience.
Hope the tags work..
Upon winning this past Saturday, Kathy said, "Can you believe this shit? I guess hell froze over. ... a lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. "I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus. So, all I can say is, 'suck it, Jesus.' This award is my god now."
Check my name tag link for where I found this...
granted, the remark was tasteless (and for that reason, funny). But hate speech? That is utterly absurd, especially coming from a religious "league" who condemns homosexuals to an eternity in hell and want to refuse them basic civil liberties.
She'd better be careful...she needs work once her reality show is over. This may affect future employment. How else is she going to get those ten nose jobs she needs to put her nose into shape?
Hey Jo Ann thanks for the links, that looks like a great film.
And although I normally find Kathy Griffin abrasive and unfunny, I say good luck to her for the award and the speech made my day.
Where was the self-righteous condemnation when Jim Carrey accepted two awards and covered his bases by thanking god for one and the devil for the other?

Isn't the phrase "suck it" just on its own offensive?
If I went up on stage and said "suck it, George W.", I'd bet I'd still get lambasted for it, even though only 29% of Americans still think he's doing a decent job...
I must be getting old for thinking that the phrase "suck it" is a bit off color. Isn't that a euphemism for "suck my d*ck"? Or am I way off base here?
I thought it was funny, btw, but then I like off color humour.
If Jim Carrey had said "I got this award by sucking Jesus's cck and this one by sucking Satan's cck", there might have been some displeasure shown for his choice of words. (It would've been way funnier though)!
Can I just say: I love America, but this, or what I take to be what will happen here, is the reason I could never live there.
I'm sure it will be censored, which is mad. If the first amendment, which guarantees freedom of speech and the sepeateness of religions from the laws does not cover the right of someone to say something disparaging of religion in a public forum then it has ceased to mean anything and you've lost your country.
Right To Free Speech does not include the right to be broadcast.
If the network feels they should censor it it is their right to do so. Though if they were any sort of network they'd air it anyway on the news or something after making a big big deal out of it all and get the ratings that follow the "outrage".
It's offensive language, plain and simple.
Just substitute anything else for Jesus and it's pretty clear:
(that was just used as an example, btw) It's about having a certain amount of respect for people.
You'd never hear Richard Dawkins use the phrase. And I'd bet you'd never hear even Christopher Hitchens use the phrase and he's about as "disrespectful" to religion as you can be.
He wrote a whole book called "God is not Great", which is on the bestseller's list, btw (re: not banned), so "suck it", Duncan, if you think the US is censoring people who speak out against religion in general.
This isn't even about the USA anyway. It's about one network which is internally censoring this speech out of prudence or puritanical reasons or whatever. They could probably run the speech intact if they wanted to - I'm not sure how the FCC would rule on it though...
Good for her. I get really tired of listening to these idiots paraising Jesus for everything from TV awards to winning a fight or a football game.
The massive egocentricity involved is slightly mind blowing. "I am so special, the creator of the universe has given me this prize or this victory."
What kind of omnipotent being watches stupid TV award shows and actually cares who wins? Sounds like Douglas Adams territory to me.
Griffin's stand-up routine is called "Everybody Can Suck It." She was probably just invoking that title in her acceptance speech.
I'm more aghast that Kathy Griffin won any sort of Emmy. I find her tragically unfunny and one of those grating personalities that makes me want to change the channel immediately when she comes on. Hell, she nearly single-handedly ruined an entire episode of The X-Files.
I have even less of a love of religion than I do for KG. While I fully support her right to say anything she wants to say, she IS being offensive to people in a way that other winners who accept awards and thank Jesus/God/Allah/Whoever are not.
Most people accept awards and say "thank you, Jesus" as a personal comment about themselves. They don't make comments about how other winners do or don't thank Jesus.
KG, instead, accepts an award and lambastes other winners entirely. This moment should be about herself, not others.
Was it necessary for her to draw attention to who she WASN'T thanking than who she was?
What a baby nation we live in now. "Suck it" is offensive now, and can't be shown on television? Boo.
Ah, so all speech must be "respectful" scott? Nobody can say anything that isn't "double plus good"?
No Willey, and I have to modify my stance (a wider stance?) No, I just didn't realize her stand-up routine was called "Everybody Can Suck It" - in this context her comment is much less offensive.
All speech doesn't have to be "respectful", but still you don't want the President of the United states going around saying "we're kicking ass", now do you?
I'm just depressed about the debasement of the English language in general and in the USA specifically...
I still don't understand why the phrase "suck it" shouldn't be considered offensive in it's own right.
Have we really come so far as to not be offended by Carlin's 7 words? Because if this is the case, people are going to have to come up with ever more offensive phrases to use.
There's a crazy Hungarian one that comes to mind that involves the tip of Jesus's... well it's not his finger I'll say that much.
I think you're all wrong. She should have not only been allowed to say "Suck it, Jesus" but also forced to say the same to Jehova God Almighty, Allah (peace be unto him), and the Flying Spaghetti Monster (may I be touched by his noodley appendage).
How the hell does Kathy Griffin win an award for anything? The woman built a career out of caricaturizing her own complete lack of talent. It's like giving Pauly Shore an award.
You really think there's nothing wrong with going on a show that is broadcast to millions of people and purposely trying to offend the vast majority of those people?
Not all speech has to be respectful. But certainly one can expect that when watching a simple entertainment program broadcast during prime time, people would be expected to conduct themselves in a way that won't offend others or make them uncomfortable.
It used to be that common decency, courtesy, and manners would ensure such a thing. Not anymore. So the network handles removing such content. I see no problem with that. I imagine you wouldn't either if your irrational hatred of anybody who believes in something you don't weren't overriding your reasoning skills.
I wrote a post about this, because I recalled another comedian doing pretty much the same thing, years ago, and he was never censored:
I remember seeing a very funny comic named Bob Nelson at Caroline’s here in New York (this must have been at least ten years ago). He had a great stream of jokes on professional athletes, and he imagined himself in the losers’ locker room after the big game. He noted that you always hear the winners crediting Jesus with supporting the team’s victory–but what do the losers say? “We would have won, if Jesus hadn’t made me fumble in the fourth quarter…”
I can also recall seeing Nelson deliver the same monologue on an MTV or Comedy Central program, and I’m sure it wasn’t censored in the least. What was so different then about commercial television, that the same kind of humor as Griffin tried at the Emmys was not censored or even widely criticized?
I have to somewhat agree with TeaForTheTillerman about some people irrationally supporting anyone who associates themselves with the Atheists's "cause".
Good point Daily Rev!
I remember Bill Cosby had this joke about his father cursing so much that he thought his name was 'Jesus Christ' and his brother's name was 'God-damn-it'.
But then one day Bill was playing in the yard alone and his father called out: "God Dammit, quit making such a racket!", to which Bill replied, "But Dad, I'm Jesus Christ!"
or something like that...
OK, it misses the mark a little, but I'm sure you can insult Jesus all you want on TV in the USA as long as you word it right.
It was tastefully done.
