Great clip, though I especially enjoyed Cornel West's reactions. Seeing that guy strut around campus in his 3-piece suits always made me chuckle a little.

John Kerry should've hired Bill Maher to spin his "flip-flopping" (remember how successful the repubs were in making Kerry's judgment a liability?) into something that intelligent people do all the time.

Mos Def was WAY TOO GODDAMN HIGH last night.

Most of that show was worthless blathering by Def or grand, slam-poetry proclamations by West.

I usually find Mahers Show amusing, though he keeps repeating himself, but this one did not make me smile :/ There have been waaay better "new rules" in the past.

... although, ofcourse, he is absolutely high about the missionaries. How much fcked up by faith must your common sense be if you try to convert people to christianity in a country dominated by people who do not only hate and try to kill foreign intruders and christians, but even hate and try to kill *everybody who is not a muslim... doesnt seem to be a good idea to me. They probably expected god to protect 'em, because of their righteous cause, divine mission or so...

Man, what a crazy world we live in.

"right", not high. I apologize for the triple-post. A possibility to edit your posts would be a great addition to this site Norm my friend :) Doesn't movable type allow that?

Rightly said, McRae.

I'd love to be able to edit out a double post. Though triple, quad, etc. posts are clearly for emphasis and should stay.

JonD, as a grad of the CSU system, I must say I'm envious of your college experience... " Seeing that guy strut around campus in his 3-piece suits",,, I hope you realize how lucky you are.

hey sorry for the triple post. the browser froze. damnit.

The best parts of the show is when there are guests who do respond to Bill's jokes-whether it be just facial expressions or body language. Great having Cornel West and Mos Def on there. And yes, I agree with ChasD that I hope you appreciate the good fortune of your hopefully excellent education.

Where T4T? Isn't he supposed to be telling us how the panning to the black guests was somehow sad and telling (of something that apparently flew over our heads)?

lol Erick. We also need to hear about how trendy that it is for all of these smug latté-drinking lefties to laugh at this.

The reaction to comedy is always personal but I thought this was the funniest Maher clip in a while, I was laughing as hard and long as West and Mos Def.

Haha - bill is great!

As a Christian (and fan of 1gm), I've never agreed more will Maher than when he said this:

"If you want to bring Jesus to the unbelievers, you can't be surprised if you get the same reception He did."

I wouldn't really call it a New Rule, though--I first began to discover it through the writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and also the book Resident Aliens: Life in the Christian Colony, and I suppose it goes back at least as far as the Anabaptist martyr Dirk Willem--as a member of the Anabaptist tradition myself, not a day goes by that I don't think of his example, and what it means (or could mean).

Anyway, I think I understand Bill's jibe--though I don't know if the Korean missionaries are the best target--that calling oneself a Christian shouldn't be like a country club membership, something that entails a sense of entitlement or group membership with the powerful. I'd like to see a return to the original meaning--where calling yourself a Christian was very likely an invitation to be killed.

Food for thought…or a punch line.

as usual bill is my hero. puts those other comedians to shame.

I ADORE WHEN MAHR LAUGHS AT HIS OWN JOKES

sometimes i cannot believe this guy has not "accidentally" disappeared... God Bless You Bill Mahr

Is there any possible way to get the section of Bill, Mos Def, and West going back and forth over Islam being a religion of violence (with Def's apologetics) and West's straw man of secular fundamentalists (or however he phrased it)? Bill did a good job defending against such blatherings, and REALLY pressed Mos Def on the issue of Islam. And nailed him, too.

This is the best Bill Maher clip ever. I'm so gonna digg it.

It has been a very long time since merely identifying yourself as a Christian was an invitation to a bullet. Usually the bullets are coming from those who proclaim gentle Jesus, meek and mild.

Now if modern evangelical Christians weren't such obvious political agents, if they stuck to separating the things of Ceaser to the things of the spirit, they would have considerably less problems.

There are places in the world where I would not choose to call myself Christian for fear of a negative response but I wouldn't want to be a Muslem in Utah either or Alabama or any place where Christian extremists hold sway.

Thomas (if I may call you that),

Are there any places in the world you would not choose to call yourself an atheist? (Not trying to be snide here, truly curious)

Are there any places in the world you would not choose to call yourself an atheist?

Perhaps in getting laid with a hot Christian babe. If you play your cards right you might even be lucky and get her to wear her actual Catholic school girl uniform.
