- Comment is free: Was Mother Teresa an atheist?
So many unanswered questions live within me afraid to uncover them ... because of the blasphemy ... If there be God ... please forgive me ... When I try to raise my thoughts to Heaven there is such convicting emptiness that those very thoughts return like sharp knives & hurt my very soul. I am told God loves me ... and yet the reality of darkness & coldness & emptiness is so great that nothing touches my soul.

For more than a century it has been cited as the quintessential example of Darwinism in action. It was the story of the peppered moth and how its two forms had struggled for supremacy in the polluted woodlands of industrial Britain.
Every biology textbook on evolution included the example of the black and peppered forms of the moth, Biston betularia. The relative numbers of these two forms were supposed to be affected by predatory birds being able to pick off selectively either the black or peppered variety, depending on whether they rested on polluted or unpolluted trees.
It became the most widely cited example of Darwinian natural selection and how it affected the balance between two competing genes controlling the coloration of an organism. Then the doubts began to emerge.

Great stuff...
Beautiful -- and funny. Well, perhaps it wasn't funny in the politically correct sense, but it certainly was funny in a political sense.I mean -- be honest here, which one of these political candidates would risk their hides for you? Which one of them would do anything at all for you? None. Yeah, I'm a cynic. Yeah, I agree that being a cynic is bad, but it's better than being naive.
I don't know exactly how to address that question. Okay -- fuck me, I'm an asshole -- here goes: I totally know how to address that question:
"Mother" "Theresa" was an atheist.
See? Get it?
Lemme do it again...
"Mother" "Theresa" was a cunt -- she was a cunt, cunt, cunt! She was a monster.
I wouldn't go so far as to label Mother Teresa an atheist. It must have been difficult to have one group telling her how wonderful a life in Christ is while seeing otherwise as she traveled to various countries. I can imagine that it created a duality in her mind that many religious people do not develop as extensively as she must have.
Mother Theresa was a cunt? She was horny? She enjoyed her sexuality?
*confused! :/ *
Please, enough with the ugly language. Norm has a classy site here.
I think the Mother Theresa revelation is fascinating. Seems like a lot of the deeply religious live with agonizing gaps between what they profess and believe.
Ted Haggard comes to mind.
I wonder how many others doubt, but feel trapped in their roles and dare not speak the truth.
I wonder if the new atheist movement ought to address this, somehow...is there some sort of way to provide a soft landing for ex-fundies?
MT was anything but saintly. Sadistic, authoritarian, and vain glorious yes, but saintly? Emphatically NO.
She worshipped suffering, especially the suffering of others, she intentionally went out of her way to make her hospitals for the dying as nasty and painful and lonely for the dying as was possible. She didn't deny that for those willing to leap blindly to the defense of this viscious dried up excuse for a human being.
I never believed her actions were based on faith but rather that her 'faith' was based on her own sick intentions and desires. Her so called faith was the covering and excuse.
No wonder she lost contact with her inner god figure. The one she espoused with her mouth and the one she worshiped with her terrible actions were two different gods. Conflicted yes but saintly? That is absurd, the woman wasn't even nominally good, just more self indulgent evil in papal livery.
Ya know, there ain't no word in this, or any language -- dead or alive -- ugly enough to describe "Mother" "Theresa," or what she did.
She explicitly demanded that not a single dime of the money that was donated to her "charity" (ie., her devious, demented, evil fucking monstrous organization) should ever be spent on any medical equipment -- yet, when she herself fell ill, she immediately acquired the best medical treatment money could afford her.
Yeah, she appeared in public as a poor person that kissed the ground underneath her pious sandals -- but only after having been transported to it in a jet that no poor, sandal-wearing person would ever travel in.
She was a depraved monster.
The Harper's cartoon. Can someone explain it?
Sarcasm, dude.
It mocks the candidates -- and does it damned well, too, I think (shovels in hand, and all).
They'd gladly hump the decaying bodies of the miners (minors too, of course) for their own political benefit.
How can you not get that? Where you from, motherfucker, Pleasantville?
Maybe he's from a culture where the humor is so unsubtle that its childish and feeble-minded denizens cannot construe any phrase as a joke unless it contains the words "penis", "fart", or "paris hilton".
"She was a depraved monster. "
Dzwonka: I've figured you out, you ARE Christopher Hitchens, saying such things to promote your book on the unsaintly mother.
nope, sorry, willey, can't agree with you there. no matter how much hitchens may identify with america, call himself american and even BE american technically, in terms of citizenship,he will never achieve the distinctly american speech patterns and form of irreverence that we know and love in our dzwonka. :)
and vice versa, of course. and i wouldn't have it any other way. big fan of british irreverance, too.
The British have made an art of irreverence.
Totally agree with Dzwonka' take on the M Terresa. A real monster.
The people in her hospices for the dying are restricted to their cots 24/7 and not allowed visitors even from their family members, they recieve no treatment, not even for pain and they are fed very little. She admitted that she wanted them to suffer because Christ's spirit was revealed in their agonized faces. The empty soul of a concentration camp 'doctor'.
