Bush commutes Libby prison sentence
President Bush spared former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby from a 2 1/2-year prison term in the CIA leak investigation Monday, delivering a political thunderbolt in the highly charged criminal case. Bush said the sentence was just too harsh.
Bush's move came just five hours after a federal appeals panel ruled that Libby could not delay his prison term. That meant Libby was likely to have to report soon, and it put new pressure on the president, who had been sidestepping calls by Libby's allies to pardon Vice President Dick Cheney's former chief of staff.
"I respect the jury's verdict," Bush said in a statement. "But I have concluded that the prison sentence given to Mr. Libby is excessive. Therefore, I am commuting the portion of Mr. Libby's sentence that required him to spend thirty months in prison."

Surely no-one could have foreseen this turn of events. The usually transparent and totally accountable Bush administration pardoning a criminal convicted for treason & perjury.
I'll bet they had a good reason.

Why wouldn't Bush pardon Libby? What was there that was discouraging him from doing it?
If he was going to be impeached, it would be happening already.

Imagine if a Democrat did the same crime, even if it didn't involve damaging national security. Why, the Republicans would demand the impeachment of that Democrat. However Republicans have always been weak on crime (for old, rich white guys) and they think they are above the law.
For a compromise how about cut Libby's prison term to just five days in Cheney's giant safe?

Bush appointed each of the judges who imposed and confirmed the sentence, and he STILL didn't like the outcome. Tells us what will happen if the Supreme Court decides the Executive Branch (and Cheney) have to obey the subpoena for info on the firing of US attorneys: not a damned thing. The White House will ignore it if they don't like it.
