Evolution
May it not suffice for me to say . . . that, of course, like every other man of intelligence and education, I do believe in organic evolution. It surprises me that at this late date such questions should be raised.—Woodrow Wilson (1922)

Wow. That really puts things in perspective... I wonder how long the "jury has been out"
1922... i wonder what he'd say to today's religion vs. evolution fight?
I suspect he would be shocked and dismayed.
Of course this is the same Wilson who made just about every other world leader grind their teeth with his endless religious moralizing and pretty much shredded the U.S. constitution during the first world war. Nice to see he had some redeeming qualities.
Sometimes presidents do cool things. James Garfield came up with a new proof of the Pythagorean Theorem.
Peter G. has it right about Wilson. Wilson was a sleazebag.
Here are comments about him by Wisconsin Senator Robert Lafollette.

"Mr. President, I had supposed until recently that it was the duty of senators and representatives in Congress to vote and act according to their convictions on all public matters that came before them for consideration and decision. Quite another doctrine has recently been promulgated by certain newspapers, which unfortunately seems to have found considerable support elsewhere, and that is the doctrine of “standing back of the President” without inquiring whether the President is right or wrong.
For myself, I have never subscribed to that doctrine and never shall. I shall support the President in the measures he proposes when I believe them to be right. I shall oppose measures proposed by the President when I believe them to be wrong. The fact that the matter which the President submits for consideration is of the greatest importance is only an additional reason why we should be sure that we are right and not to be swerved from that conviction or intimidating in its expression by any influence of its power whatsoever."
Scroll down for many other comments by Lafollette. Nowadays Wisconsin has another fine Senator in Feingold.
Wilson hypocritically talked about preserving liberty and democracy while passing laws making it illegal to oppose the war and the draft and throwing opponents in jail, like Eugene Debs.

"It will involve the immediate addition to the armed forces of the United States already provided for by law in case of war at least 500,000 men, who should, in my opinion, be chosen upon the principle of universal liability to service, and also the authorization of subsequent additional increments of equal force so soon as they may be needed and can be handled in training."
John Steinbeck treated that "universal" liability in "East of Eden".
Though there is a difference between war-monger Wilson and war-monger Bush.
"It will involve also, of course, the granting of adequate credits to the government, sustained, I hope, so far as they can equitably be sustained by the present generation, by well-conceived taxation. I say sustained so far as may be equitable by taxation because it seems to me that it would be most unwise to base the credits which will now be necessary entirely on money borrowed. It is our duty, I most respectfully urge, to protect our people so far as we may against the very serious hardships and evils which would be likely to arise out of the inflation which would be produced by vast loans."
85 years later Presidents & candidates answer to the contrary or sweat bullets when the question is raised. These are very scary times.
Nice job patting yourselves on the back guys. Why does everyone focus on the idiots who represent creationists and never check the facts for themselves? I won't be a flaming retard and defend catholics, baptists, etc... but I will say that there is real scientific data out there that creates a damn good argument against evolution. Take, for example, the evolution of left and right handed RNA. The problem of oxygen in our atmosphere preventing the formation of nucleotides. Gaps in the fossil record. There's lots.
..I'm just sayin'...
but I will say there is real scientific data out there that creates a damn good argument against gravity. Take, for example, the fact of hot air balloons, birds, and airplanes. Gaps in the records of old people falling in the bathtub. There's lots. .. I'm just sayin'. . .
The problem of oxygen in our atmosphere preventing the formation of nucleotides.
Nucleotides had been around for millions, if not billions of years before there was much oxygen in the atmosphere. The first significant amounts of oxygen appeared after the evolution of water oxidation by photosynthetic bacteria.
Handedness in RNA is question that must be dealt with by origin-of-life researchers. The question does not constitute "a damn good argument against evolution."
Gaps in the fossil record are eliminated and smaller gaps appear as new fossils are found and analyzed.
You're just sayin' ..., and I'm sure you'll keep on sayin' ..., but you don't have to defend Baptists or Catholics to be a flaming retard.
