A Moral Person
I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in "A," "B," "C," and "D." Just who do they think they are? And from where do they presume to claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me? And I am even more angry as a legislator who must endure threats of every religious group who thinks It has some god-given right to control my every roll call in the Senate. I am warning them today: I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of " conservatism."—Barry Goldwater

How ironic that modern conservatism's founding father warned against the very "moralizing" religious wackos who now control his movement.
They'd swift boat, black baby, Dean scream his bum so fast.
I too am lost as to where this "connection" began with preachers and the religions they seem to be divine delegates of. They say they speak on behalf of the writs of morality of their gods, but they truly only speak on behalf of themselves. And the funny thing is, if they were to pipe down, we'd easily forget their religions were even worth considering in the first place.
Here a famous clip of Goldwater on liberty and Justice :

As you probably know, the connection with modern American conservatism was really cemented by Reagan - he thought he could use these bastards (particularly Falwell and Robertson) and as it turns out, they did an even more effective job of using him. Once Reagan let these shitheads in, the infection spread and has been rotting out the core of the GOP ever since. Gleen Greenwald does an outstanding and concise dissection of the manner in which Bush has been the vehicle with which conservatives have eviscerated their own supposed principles. (http://www.amazon.com/Tragic-Legacy-Mentality-Destroyed-Presidency/dp/0307354199). Kevin Phillips also rues having helped build the GOP Christofascist monstrosity (http://www.amazon.com/American-Theocracy-Politics-Religion-21stCentury/dp/0143038281).
What? Like there havent been people telling other people what to think and do since the dawn of civilization. this is nothing new, why get angry over it?
The weak willed and the lazy will always prefer others to do their thinking for them, and accept one pre-baked philosophy or another. Those who can think for themselves and are willing to accept the consequences of doing so will continue to think for themselves. The only difference from a fe hundred years ago is that free-thinkers were burned at he stake ass witches, now at least there is some grudging tolerance of those who think otherwise. But why get mad at the sheep? And why get mad at the people who preach a pre-baked philosophy? Do these preachers do evil? Sure, but so do politicians and even corporate bosses who tell their fellow citizens/employees what they should think or do.
