I don't think I've heard more than 15 minutes of Imus in the Morning but from what I did hear and what I've read, he's not all that different from most morning DJ hosts on rock stations all over the country. We used to have a guy called Mancow on a local station here in Kansas City and if we're gonna start getting rid of radio personalities because they offend people, he should have gone way before Imus.
I hate to agree with Rosie but I think the thought police are way more of a threat to society than Imus or Mancow ever will be. If we don't like it, change the channel.
Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me.

M.C. Rove, Mass-Manslaughterer/laughter-er, I'll concede that.

Imus is a bully. In a tolerant society we cannot use public arenas to shout down people we don't like. Our institutions must promote free expression -- and this is exactly what Imus DOESN'T do.
And btw, I am curious: is it sin-gas? synge-ass? sing-as? sine-gas? sigh-n-gas(p)?

Bill O'Reilly, Keith Olbermann, Rosie O'Donnell, Howard Stern, Michael Savage, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are all bullies in my opinion. Should we demand they all be fired too? Do you really want to live in a world where people are scared to share their opinions because someone may be offended? We don't have to like them but despotism is not the answer.

It can't believe I'm about to say this but I have to agree with Syngas on this.
Tolerance is a two way street as well as free speech. The people Imus made the comment about have had the opportunity to respond to his comments and have done so. Free speech applies to all speech not just what you agree with.
I don't listen to Imus and don't condone some of what he says but I also don't think people like Al Sharpton should be able to dictate what others can and can not say or hear.

It would interesting to know if there was anything in the contract Imus had with CBS that prohibited the kind of speech he apparently used on a daily basis.

That would be interesting to know. I do know Imus has had more than a few conflicts with management over the years and maybe this is the straw that broke the camel's back.

I second that Dar. I actually find O'Reilly more racist than Richards and Imus combined! Here where I live we have a station called KROQ where these two idiots (a couple of 60 yr olds who think they're 15) constantly bombard the airwaves with lame gay jokes and insults. Personally, I think that is so George Bush! ;)

I watched a clip of Sharpton on O'Reilly talking about this and it's was disturbing hearing them talk about who they will go after next now that they won this victory against Imus.
IMO Sharpton and O'Reilly are no different in this regard.

I agree with most here that the Imus thing is a farce. Until we start unilaterally removing other tv and radio personalities who cross the line, he should keep his job. I mean, seriously, he doesn't even come close to AC, RL and those other vile examples. Either they all get capped or we let them say the hell they want without consequence no matter how hateful it may be.
Leave it to the media to hang a lower rung "criminal" while letting the others master criminals saunter around.
It's such crap. Do they think we're stupid? It's just like a lynchmob - get the people all riled up and they follow suit. (I guess that answers my question..)
So f@#%in' pathetic.

this "farce" just shows you that the system is working fine.
a station hires an asshole who uses his freedom to make asshole comments. people get offended but say nothing for a while, then they get really upset and exercise their right to complain. the targets of his commentary speak out, people start thinking about it and agree that they don't want to listen to assholes making asshole comments. the station chief hears of this, decides he would rather have listeners than assholes and fires the asshole.
end of story.
if you want to stand up for people's right to assholy comments, then you should be more tolerant to hearing people's responses to it.

I think that's not quite right. Publicity hounds Sharpton and Jackson see this as an opportunity, publicize it, some listeners don't want to listen to racist comments so they join the bandwagon. Sponsors go oh no oh no, this might cost us money it's all over the media now. We better withdraw our advertising and see if it dies down. There are plenty of folks who either because they like racist comments or they like Imus in spite of his racist comments would continue to listen. Millions and millions of them. The owners say we don't give a damn what the listeners think only if the advertisers will continue to advertise and under their breath they bitch about Sharpton and Jackson. I don't give the coporate fucks any credit at all other than looking at the bottom line.

Sure, but in a free society, that's a consequence of racist, sexist speech. I'm not worried about Imus-- he's rich and will be fine; I'm not worried about the corporate fucks-- they've protected their bottom line; I'm not worried about Imus' listeners-- there are plenty of other assholes to listen to on the radio. The only ones hurt were these fantastic young athletes-- who should be able enjoy their moment in the sun without all this crap gunking it up. That's as much Sharpton's fault as Imus'-- but Imus started it.
