The wind ruffles the leaves of the date sapling in its planter, and Dr. Elaine Soloway quickly shields it. "There's only one plant like this in the world, and I'm still worried about it," she says.

When the creationists first took control of the school board here in Kansas the guy who drew up the anti-science standards said he didn't know if the sun revolved around the Earth or not. Gravity is just a theory you know.
The Hitchens review of Aayan Hirsi Ali is a good one. He carefully makes all the sensible points without going off the deep end as he sometimes does.
The problem which Ali is jumping into in America is that criticizing Muslim societies is a prelude to trying to get people to invade some country. And whatever her message is, it's being used by the right for that purpose. Left wing organizations like Human Rights Watch have been documenting the abuse of the women in the Muslim world for a long time. Now a Somali woman comes to tell us the same thing, but it's connected with an effort to bait us into either a war or a defense of radical Islam. I don't like that choice very much. That may or may not be her fault and doesn't necessarily say anything about the truth of her message. But I don't like being manipulated, so I don't keep it on C-SPAN if I ever see Aayan Hirsi Ali speaking at the AEI.
There may be left-wing people in Holland who argue that fundamentalist Islam is as good as liberal democracy, but I don't like being accused of thinking that way, just because I don't subscribe to the AEI view of the world.
Wait. What? What is that? Do the french scientists really believe the Sun revolves around the Earth?
No, Erick, just some waggish Frenchie making fun of the guy on WWTBAM...
:)
Well it is good to see that not all of the incredibly ignorant people in the world are from the USA.
Judging by the graph that popped up, fifty six percent of the studio audience thought the sun revolves around the earth.
