Ed Begley

A final sendoff for Fox's "Half-Wit News Hour". Ed Begley was the unifying theme for one of the least funny comedy shows I've ever seen. The four clips compiled in this video took place throughout the program. Bash Hollywood, the environment, insert a little toilet humor, contrive a totally unbelievable rational for Ed ending up in jail and then finish it up with the overused and stupid reference to jail-house rape. Yuk.

This is the only thing on Fox News that isn't funny.

I don't get it, where's the jokes? Ed has an electric car and drives it all over town without a problem. Is he having car problems? Is that considered funny now? If I have a flat tire I don't ever see people driving by laughing and I drive a hybrid and live in Kansas where there's no shortage of conservatives.

If I need the jokes explained to me I guess they just aren't funny.

This show is like watching the show within a show on Studio 60. It's interesting (sometimes) but so incredibly far from funny.

My god, I've seen enough. My eyes are bleeding. Please stop torturing us with this...

why ed begley? and none of those electric car jokes were remotely funny. ok, strike that, none of those jokes were remotely funny.

yeah, and the laugh track's still bothering the shit out of me.

Agreed, except: stop posting this unfunny crap!

The point of this sketch being that hybrid cars don't work? Jesus, have they been holding on to these jokes for 15 years or something? Next up, have you heard about this new celebrity? Max Headroom? What's HIS deal?! Har Har Har.

A scene from Annie Hall came to mind watching this..

       ALVY

Do you realize how immoral this all is?

                ROB
Max, I've got a hit series.

                ALVY
Yeah, I know; but you're adding fake
        laughs.

Technicians turn the monitors back on, showing Rob on the screen with another character, Arnie.

                ARNIE
        Oh, I'm sorry.

                ROB ON TV SCREEN
        Arnie.

                ARNIE
        Yeah.

                ROB
            (Turning to the technician)
Give me a tremendous laugh here, Charlie.

                ALVY
        Look, uh ...

Loud laughter from the TV monitors.

                ROB
            (To Alvy)
We do the show live in front of an
        audience.

                ALVY
Great, but nobody laughs at it 'cause
        your jokes aren't funny.

                ROB
Yeah, well, that's why this machine
        is dynamite.

                ROB ON TV SCREEN
You better lie down. You've been in
        the sun too long.

                ROB
            (To the technician)
Yeah ... uh, now give me a like a
        medium-size chuckle here ... and
        then a big hand.

The sounds of laughter and applause are heard from the TV.

                ALVY
            (Removing his glasses and
            rubbing his face)
        Is there booing on there?

Eating out of a dumpster isn't illegal.

If they keep playing this Fox might lose it's standing as a reputable News organisation.

i love that kurt pointed out that eating out of a dumpster isn't illegal. it's also pretty impossible to get into an electric car and not realize you don't have a charge. also, ed rides his bike most places, and being "held over night" usually gets you a well supervised cell. not to mention that barack obama didn't "sometimes use cocaine" in his teenage years; he "tried" cocaine. also, he admitted to it. i can't think of a single slightly humorous bit on that entire show, and i sat through the entire first episode just a few minutes ago.

i foresee a cancellation. sadly, as the show's existance is funny.

These are the most dumb and depressing clips ever posted here

I guess after redefining truth it is now time to redefine funny.

Profoundly not funny.

next they'll just say, "THAT GUY'S A NIGGER!" for no apparent reason. Then they'll say "THAT NIGGER'S GETTING RAPED IN PRISON!" and we're supposed to laugh at these jokes. one thing very apparent is the laugh track, canned and shoved down our throats like everything else on Fox. This may be the face of American fascism. did i say nigger i meant environmentalist.

The "actors" on this show don't really sound like they are even trying to be funny. It really just sounds like they are trying to be insulting and derisory.

People like Jon Stewart, Kieth Olbermann, and even Stephen Colbert, seem a lot more good-natured and humble (even sometimes self-deprecating) when they do their toungue-in-cheek bits.

I've laughed at funny presentations of ideas or criticism I disagree with (certain episodes of The Simpsons and Futurama for example), but the people on this show just strike me as revolting jerks.

"If they keep playing this Fox might lose it's standing as a reputable News organisation."

What, they haven't already?

This show is yet another data point in the clear correlation between republicans and mental retardation.

I have seen better jokes come out of a primary school's talent show.

To me this whole show clearly illustrates the point that FOX News is in fact not a news channel, but a "way of life" channel.

I think someone at FOX needs to sit down and watch the Crossfire episode Jon Stewart was a guest on.

more! more! I love failed comedy. Please keep posting this delightful crap. It's like when teenagers young teens taunt eachother and one of them makes a comeback that tries to sound funny but ends up just sounding hurtful. They've lost and they know it. You can see it in the hollow, broken looks the actors give on the show.

Incidently, they seem to also be trying to copy "Royal Canadian Air Farce" (a long time successful comedy show that often gets appearances from party leaders and even sitting prime ministers) and their name seems to be directly ripped off from another Canadian news/humor show called "This Hour has 22 Minutes". Their ACLU skit certainly reminds me of the kinds of skits Air Farce does. Unfortunately for them, the only kind of celebrity pull they have consists of failed pundits (Rush and Coulter). If they were actually funny as opposed to just shameful they might be able to get some bigger fish.

Having read the comments, I'm glad I skipped the clip. I know you don't go blind from masturbating but I'm not so sure about what might happen from watching this crappola.

So here's Fox's message: Only sissies are concerned about the environment. Only sissies drive hybrid cars. Hybrid cars can't drive up hills, which is very sissy-like. If your sissy car can't drive up a hill, you might get arrested, and raped in jail.

I'm thinking -- in the old days before 24-hour night and day TV, your idiot box would play the national anthem and maybe show some F-16s cruising around some beautiful hills and valleys -- and then they'd sign off.

And I'm thinking, Fox News should do the same. Except, it should feature Bill "Falaffel-Boy" O'Reily jumping onto the stage in a pink speedo, and yelling "The Aristocrats!"

At least that would make some sense.

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of a certain kind of people find this stuff funny. And by "a certain kind" I mean the people that thought it was hilarious to hand out flip-flops to the crowds at the Republican National Convention. "Flip-flop"! Get it? OH SNAP IN YOUR FACE!

Depressing is what it is.

I would like to third the motion: Please stop posting unfunny crap.

Well, if I had the sense of humour of someone who is faux-angry at people different to them, then this would be hilarious.

Dont worry, its just a watered-down version of dictatorships that would either own humour so that they dont recieve criticism - and get rid of suspicious types of people who live strangely out of the norm - or repress it.

Fox is trying to sabotage wit/satire in order to control it. This has failed - they need to invest in at least 40 shows in order to lever themselves into controlling the general sense of humour...which it sounds like they arent going to do.

So this is more of a up-yours to those who have kept/developed compassion & empathy. Well, as every failed dictatorship knows, their greatest failure was not in failing to own every soul as well as the body & mind of all their citizens, but that they lost the ability to be sensitive, compassionate and empathic.

I wouldnt worry too much about this schloss of a coverup for their real intentions.

And sadly for them, they will never be able to equalise The Daily Show. They have little ability to acquire the right tools to be better/equal than them.

btw if you want to see an East German version of Rush Limbaugh, check out The Life Of The Others & the Honecker joke...the Stasi men are the ones who find this show funny.....unbelievable but true

I can't even watch these videos. It literally makes me sick to my stomach to watch this crap.

Yes, hybreds do TERRIBLE on hills!! Simply AWEFUL!! No one in San Francisco drives a hybred cause they just can't get around!! They all drive big ol' honken' SUV's cause the hill is just too mighty! So if they don't drive them here, what's this fool thinken' driven' one out there?? God damned Hollywood elitests... mumble mumble

Oh, come on, nobody found it a little funny?

Seriously, I wonder if even republicans would watch this shit. It's less funny than SNL and MAD TV put together with According to Jim. It's very possible that they'll just watch it out of spite and this will get the ratings O'Reilly gets.

Probably Republican Nielsen families will just leave their box on Fox News while they go watch the Daily Show in the other TV.

OK, here's something else.

I just found that the creator of this show is a dumbass co-creator of 24. Maybe that's why they make Jack Bauer pronounce nuclear "nukyular".

I found evidence that Keifer Sutherland does this on purpose, in one of the recent episodes he did pronounce the word correctly. I think it was on the same episode that the bomb exploded. I watched it again and again just to make sure.

Anyway, 24 is fun if you don't take it seriously, but I was so surprised that some of these idiots were actually saying that people condone torture because 24 is so popular. Maybe another one for the conspiracy nuts?

I realize that the funniness of comedy is quite often in the eye of the beholder, but by Zeus's lightning bolts (I try to blaspheme in different religions, even dead ones), this is fucking lame! I couldn't make it past 30 seconds, and that was sheer torture just to get that far.

...

I'm so confused. Why do they feel the need to do this? Is this how they get their rocks off?

I remember seeing snippets of The Daily Show on Brit Hume's show (don't ask) when he signs off or goes to a commercial break. And as one might suspect, the jokes were about Democrats or the like, then you see Hume with a smirk on his face as it goes to a commercial.

So what the fuck is their problem? I would rather listen to the death rattle of my only child than bear witness to this shit for more than 5 minutes.

Jesus. That is just shameful and unnecessary. Ed is a sweet man. Electric cars threaten no one but oil companies.

Also, putting Ed in Beverly Hills was a nasty little political jab. They want to make him out to be some rich, elitist looney. He doesn't live in Beverly Hills. I know this, as do most Angelinos, because he's one of the most visible residents of Studio City. Visible because he walks everywhere. He lives a simple and gentle life. Good man.

Wow, where to start?

First off, Ed Begley Jr. doesn't live in Beverly Hills. He lives near me in the San Fernando Valley. Look at that map of Beverly Hills, all the country clubs are shown. What does Fox News have against the rich that they must somehow parody how many country clubs rich people have?

And remember, Ed Begley ISN'T rich. He doesn't live in Beverly Hills. He doesn't belong to country clubs. He's a steadily working character actor, not a star.

Apparantly Fox is against people being modestly successful, and they need to really stick it to them by playing them as rich fatcats. I really want to ask them why it's so evil to be rich? I don't have anything against rich people, why do THEY? To them, apparantly it's the worst insult they can hurl.

What I find HILARIOUS is listening to that sound mix. There's one guy laughing loudly in the studio audience (a paid laugher) and then the laugh track is played loudly over him. It sounds amazingly fake.

I definitely prefer liberal humor over conservative humor.

That last one with the riot could have been funny in a different context, but they put the emphasis on all the wrong parts.

Very stupid writers, stupid actors, dumb show.

I'm assuming Surnow is the weak link in the 24 creation chain, which is consistenly entertaining.

norm, we love you can all, but i just really hope you come to your senses and stop giving this crap a larger audience than it deserves. :)

Too many sites like Crooks and Liars air so many Fox and Ann Coulture clips all the time to the point where I stopped visiting them.

Sometimes I think these idiotic talking heads have a larger audience with the liberal bloggers than with the right wing, to the point that the commentators are directing their comments direcly at the liberal blog crowd in a kind uber inane of feedback loop.

so they are spreading disinformation about electric cars...what a shame. just buts me in a bad mood :)

here's something uplifting: Nissan's new eco-taxi here in Japan. Emits only water. gets 240 miles to the tank.

tinyurl.com/ytax8o

man, this just irks me to no end. What is the message here? People who care about the environment are homeless losers? That new technology which competes with Big Oil and our dependency on foreign oil sucks ass? That animals losing their habitat is somehow friggen hilarious (previous show).

I'm conviced that FOX's days are numbered. American is waking up to enviromentalism--with or without the governments help, corporations are going green. People do care about the environment, and about their childrens futures. Fox is painting themselves in a corner here. CONSERVATIVES care about the environment too. People haved turned away from this Administration and they will try away from FOX, most people don't really share those values.

For far better television viewing, check out Begley's series, Living with Ed, which is on HGTV. It's kinda contrived (we're supposed to believe his wife of +/- 15 years -- a pilates instructor and actress -- somehow has a problem with green living), but it is infinitely better television. If you really think Ed's a good guy, watch his show -- or at least tell someone you watch it.

It's hard to believe that the "writers", actors and producers really even share these disgusting values. I think they are just trying to say whatever would irk the liberal bloggers the most. That's how they are able to draw so much attention to themselves (and why Norm posted the video).

IF YOU IGNORE THEM THEY VANISH. Ann Coulture only exists because she says the most obxious things she can think of in order to draw attention to helpful.

If everyone just stopped paying attention to this sad, sick woman she'd probably lose her mind and share her head like britney or something...

Mega-stupid and bad taste. But there seem to exist people who laugh at it... Well, well, "il faut de tout pour faire un monde".

Well, here's no surprise--FNC and certain bloggers are claiming victory for this abortion of a show because it's debut numbers have "nearly equalled" (their words, not mine) The Daily Show's—1.5 million vs. 1.6 million—and surpassed TCR, which earns 1.2 million a night.

Of course, this "victory" conveniently ignores that:

TDS/TCR are late-night shows; 1/2 Hour is a prime-time show.

A lot of people will watch a train-wreck—once. Let's see where this settles after a few weeks. Hopefully in the dumpster.

"So what the fuck is their problem? I would rather listen to the death rattle of my only child than bear witness to this shit for more than 5 minutes." - Tummler

Now thats a review!!! ;o)

Unfortunately a riot has broken out in the prison where he's being held. Apparently two rival gangs of convicts have each claimed Ed as theirs.

And these are the kind of people who are offended by Janet Jackson's boob?

Wow.

What kind of people are angry about those who drive fuel-efficient cars? I don't get it.

Its amazing to me how many people ive read on blogs and websites going crazy over this show. I think they just act like they like it to piss off liberals.

user-pic

Do you ever go back and watch re-runs of the first years of SNL? It's pretty flimsy and arid. Likewise, this show is just finding its legs. C'mon now, soon this "Half Hour Hour" is gonna be sublime and overtake every comedic vehicle of the past. You just gotta bring back Minnie Pearl, Roy Clark, Buck Owens, Jr. Samples, and the fence in the cornfield that kicks people in the seat of the pants!

user-pic

really, norm, this stuff is SO bad, and so tortuous to watch. are you trying to get us to hate conservatives? i think this qualifies as incitement. please, i want to continue living in my make-believe world where everyone is equally stupid. stop it! just stop it!

Jon Stewart--describing a tremendous, cancerous wart on a dying man's ass--would be more lively and entertaining than these two.

I won't be posting more from the show unless it gets a hell of a lot better.

Didn't the simpsons do a much better Ed joke years ago?

user-pic

"I won't be posting more from the show unless it gets a hell of a lot better."

--which is like saying Never, basically. Sad. There is ironic merit to stinky TV of this Fox variety. It's not like the usual trainwreck stuff, which is predictably tiresome. Rather, it's misguided and nakedly interesting for its warped motives. And the more you torture readers with it, the funnier it becomes, albeit in a sick way.

Please reconsider! I don't have cable.

Our grandchildren will be watching this show in history class years from now, shown as an example of early 21st century propaganda produced by corporate barons (the true totalitarians of our time). With standards as low as the junk on this show, its obvious their on the losing side, and desperate.

How did these two "conservative comedians" get past their fear of the dreaded Hollywood "conservative blacklist" and decide to star on this show?

Oh, that's right, there is no such thing as a Hollywood conservative blacklist or conservative comedy.

Dzwonka: And I'm thinking, Fox News should do the same. Except, it should feature Bill "Falaffel-Boy" O'Reily jumping onto the stage in a pink speedo, and yelling "The Aristocrats!"

Now that would be funny! Conservatives can take heart that when the Dems are in complete control in early 2009, The Daily Show and Colbert Report will rip them to shreds-- then we'll all be happy.

Well I thought it was actually kind of funny. It was also funny in how obvious some of the jokes were. Prison rape? No, we haven't heard that before, and it's HILARIOUS...

But does any else find some of the jokes odd? So there's two huge gangs that are going to fight over some guy in the Beverly Hills PD jail? I've never been to LA, but I've always heard how slow the Interstates are. So, an electric car can't keep up with stop and go traffic on the the Interstate? Or, have you ever heard of a modern power plug just "falling out"? I think I'll go now and let my head explode.

Sense of humour's gone down the toilet for Fox. If they want funny, all they have to do is air another episode of MASH or the Simpsons. Those shows are always good for a laugh.

As for the car climbing the hill.. it reminds me of the Dire Straits song "Heavy Fuel"

"...When my ugly big car
Won't climb this hill
I'll write a suicide note
On a hundred dollar bill
if you wanna run cool..."

I thought we were supposed to be trying to encourage people to use hybrids?

Big Oil must be payin some of the bills over there at Fox.

Perhaps a hybrid vehicle association of some sort should sue for false and missleading info regarding the abilities of hybrid cars. Then again, that would just give the crap a wider audience...

Seriously, I'd be interested to know if there's anyone out there who genuinely thinks this show is brilliant or genius or the like, and why...

Personally speaking it just about reached my expectations: An unfunny, poorly-conceived and unsuccessful attempt at ridiculing the "liberal agenda". Which apparently means "Take everything liberals supposedly stand for and support the opposite, even if makes no sense."

Even the name: Half-hour Comedy Hour? Witty, guys, real witty.

Well, that was a waste of 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

I read a comment somewhere about "liberals" (by that, the author seemed to mean anyone in the English-speaking world who had a decent sense of taste and humor) just don't get "conservative humor." Yes, we don't see the humor in factually incorrect stereotypes and cruelty. Shame on us "liberals."

Well, the actual comedic ability of the fake anchor people in this skit isn't actually that bad. It's even kinda decent.

However, the very narrowly focused choice of jokes, and especially the use of a canned laugh track makes it clear that what we're really seeing here is Ye Olde Propaganda machine.

-- Furry cows moo and decompress.

user-pic

The anchors seem to have some talent, but they are on a very short leash and the material still makes no sense.

What??? They suck ass. And the ass they suck is not even pretty. They may not even be comedians, just rejected or starting actors (didn't bother to check out their bios).

Worse than kevin Nealon and Amy Poehler in SNL.

seriously, we get it. Bad bad show.

Don't use up good comedy space with this garbage!

if it wasn't for the laugh track i wouldn't know the fdifference between this and regular ol fox news

Factually incorrect stereotypes and cruelty are used in liberal humor as well as conservative humor. I don't like either type of humor, because they are not funny, only cruel lies. I will say this though. That Fox News "Comedy" clip was completely devoid of humor.

I dislike political satire. The Daily Show and The Colbert Report are nothing but cruel slams against conservatives. So, yes shame on you liberals and shame on you conservatives as well. You are both idiots.

user-pic

This Fox News Comedy sucks. The Daily Show sucks. The Colbert Report sucks. Liberals and Conservatives are morons. You should all learn to get along because like it or not you need each other.

I am sick of liberals and conservatives. They all need to grow up!

I tried to laugh. I like to see people that have opposing views as me that are funny and smart. It gives me hope. Unfortunately this show didn't.
