Nice find:D
Bush's renaming of the War on Terror is, ironically, a pure and perfect definition of what America has become under his regime.
A stupid president for stupid people.
WAIT, wait, wait, wait! You mean he's REALLY saying "they hate us 'cause we're FREE"?!?
..that was in Tom Tomorrow's (excellent) cartoon, This Modern World, as a JOKE .. and Bush is literally ...
sigh
I'll give Bush a little credit, I think that was the most nuanced (a/k/a accurate) description of the late unpleasantness I've ever heard him give.
A pity that TDS is on vacation. I could see them having a field day with this.
"And now, for new developments in The-Struggle-Against-Ideological-Extremists-Who-Do-Not-Believe-In-Free-Societies-And-Who-Happen-To-Use-Terror-As-A-Weapon-To-Try-To-Shake-The-Conscience-Of-The-Free-World we now turn to our senior analasyst..."
Confused indeed.
This means Rummy finally got his GSAVE (Global Struggle against violent extremists) in, and even a year later, Dubya mangled it.
I agree with Rummy, you can't debate ethics in a free society. Remember ignorance is strength.
America: get on the Imperialist warmonger bandwagon or get out.
"Any kind of moral and intellectual confusion about who or what is right or wrong can weaken the ability of free societies to persevere."
What the hell does it mean to "weaken one's ability to persevere"? Let's just get a casual definition of "persevere", shall we? According to dictionary.com, two meanings are:
to persist in anything undertaken; maintain a purpose in spite of difficulty, obstacles, or discouragement; continue steadfastly.
to persist in speech, interrogation, argument, etc.; insist.
So if we can restate "confusion about what is right or wrong" as "the ability to see multiple sides of an issue", then I suppose yes, that might work against the ability to simply insist something is true, or to maintain one's a priori purpose, in the face of obstacles such as, say, "evidence"...
So maybe what Rummy says is true, though by using "persevere" and conjuring images of the underdog, struggling heroically to overcome his innate disadvantages, he almost manages to make it sound like he's making an argument against moral ambiguity.
Not sure any of that is contingent on being a "free society" though.
He spoke articulately. So what's the joke?

Keith, Tom Tomorrow was just quoting him. Bush has been saying variations of those exact words in speech after speech for years. The earliest example I found is from Sept. 17, 2001, but there are lots more:That's from a speech archived here: http://archives.cnn.com/2001/US/09/17/gen.bush.transcript/
whats the joke? they're the joke.
I love how happy Bush looks after he says that.
"OMG! I said something without f-ing it up!"
Rumsfeld sounds very tola tera ter totalitarian
