Bill Maher on Hardball

"If this really is World War III and bin Laden and Huessin are really Hitler and they're facists would we really be fighting the war on the way we are fighting it, on the cheap, not getting the homefront involved, not having a draft if it really was WW III wouldn't you think you'd have to draft people to fight that war."—Bill Maher

I think I'm gonna campaign to get Maher in Quebec damnit he's just to good.

How does anyone as unqualified or unprofessional as Matthews get a chance to host a show like this?

Matthews really does understand some aspects of politics. If read his original book, "Hardball", you can see that he understands how things work. But he can be a real dope about some things sometimes. Saying Bill Maher is smart is dopey.

Maher was still pretty good there. He's not quite right that Democrats have never said basically, "this is the wrong war and it was fought badly". That's what Kerry said the whole campaign in 2004. The problem was coming up with your own proposal. I don't expect left-wing comedians to have their own proposals but politicians should.

One of the biggest problems with the way people talk about Dems is the confusing of a real evaluation of proposals with a mere evaluation of rhetoric. If you want politicians to come up with good proposals, you would applaud what the leading Dems like Biden and Kerry are doing right now: laying out various proposals opposed to the current strategy. If you want, on the other hand, to critique rhetoric and campaigning and you don't care about coming up with good ideas, you will whine to no end about how the Democrats aren't unified, how they don't have a strong message and so on. Being able to communicate a strong message is an important part of leadership, but so is having good ideas in the first place.

Everyone in the country knows that the Democrat is the more anti-war vote. People don't need to be told that the GOP started the war and lost it. That's why I think that Matthews is wrong. The Republicans will not crack 48% of the overall vote for Congress. They'll get 46% or 47% and that's if they retain control. When you have a guy like George Allen fighting for his life right now, the Republicans are in trouble. In 2004 Republicans were motivated to fight for their guy. Now they really aren't.

Wasn't too bad if you ask me. Kinda repetitive with the whole "where are the dems", but i think apart from that covered some worth while ground.

I like Bill Maher, but John Edwards for president? He's part of the reason Kerry lost in the first place. If John Edwards ever got elected, people would get sued every time someone decided their food tasted bad. Litigation in America is out of control and giving one of the most despicable lawyers in America power like that would only make the problem worse.

Name a folksy speaker for the Democrats? Try Paul Hackett. Sincere, straight-shooting, and relevant to the times.

It seems to me that the Democratic strategy is to just sit back and let the Republicans sink their own ship. I don't think that's going to work, especially when the Republicans are so good at changing the subject (Islamofascism!) and lying.

And, the Democrat who needs to step forward and become the voice of the party is Russ Feingold. He didn't vote for this stupid war, he's articulate, and he's credible, unlike Pelosi and some of the other Democratic leaders...

This current administration has bungled almost EVERYTHING.

Yet, here is Chris Matthews constantly harping at Bill Maher the same tired question: "What's wrong with the Democrats?"

Come on Matthews - WAKE UP! He said it himself that Democrats haven't been able to get their point across, and thus they haven't had any power (Republicans control government!).

So instead of waisting airtime ATTACKING Democrats, why not go after the incompetent people who ACTUALLY matter (like our wire-tapping and torturing President)?

It looked to me that at the end of this clip Maher was rather amused at Matthews' cluelessness.

Maher is, as usual, brilliant.

He's right about the dems not being able to formulate a coherent persuasive response to W's countless fuck ups.

I have noticed he doesn't play "Hardball" with people he knows hit back or likes.

He bullied Michelle Malkin, yet said to Ann Coulter that she wrote beautifully and had a "brilliant brain"

He has let too many people get away with distortion on his show, without calling bull-shit.

Matthews is smart, but just doesn't hold the right people's feet to the fire.

Yes, Tweety, the Democrats are not on television. Guess why? Because we have an outright propaganda station dictating the script to the rest of the so-called "liberal media" which in fact is a huge MSM echo chamber, firmly in the hand of the GOP.

I'm sick and tired of hearing that the Democrats don't make their case. They make it pretty well and quite extensively. But they are not asked, not covered, not presented because lazy journalists like you prefer the comic hero world of Republican talking points. So shut up about the Democrats. Give them equal space on your program for a start instead of sucking up to hacks like Coulter.

I seem to remember The SS pulled Cheney off his feet and dragged him to the basement! There were questions in the online community about the state of alert of the national guard, has that been instantiated

The answer to the question that stumped Bill is: Howard Dean. He has consistently been the smartest, most articulate, most focused Democratic representative on TV, and his appearances have just been getting better and better. I'm surprised he didn't think of him. Dean also understands the role of the media, and is clearly interested in using the media intelligently, something most other Dems haven't caught on to yet.

Yes Max, thank goodness Edwards is not the VeePee. Afterall where did the parents of a girl, whose intestines were sucked off by a faulty hot tube, get the silly notion that they can actually sue the manufacturer of such device, the gall of these people and their lawyers!

Thankfully, Cheney also did not get elected. Afterall, this is a person with direct connection to the big military industrial complex. Maybe they may have had started wars and given arbitrary contracts to some of his buddies, and thus funnel billions of our hard earned tax dollars to parasites that have zero accountability. And maybe them rich bastards may have passed their own tax cuts, that would have forced the rest of us to pick up the tab for the tax bill that Chenney's buddies may have been suckering from us. I mean, thank goodness that didn't happen also, wait.....

So you truly believe that it is better to have people who are sucking our treasury dry, by funneling billions -that they don't pay- of our tax dollars, and killing thousands of people in the process. That somehow is better than having the right to sue corporations that make faulty products. Well, Max,in case you didn't know, Mussolini said that Fascism should be named Corporatism, since it is the marriage of the corporation and state. And people like you who keep giving absolute power to the corporation just may put us en route to get Mussolini's dream accross the Atlantic.

Sigh....

lol. Thanks, javi.

I still don't get why these interview- people have to shout so much. It's like they're putting pieces in a puzzle at breakneck speed. And then when there's only one piece left, they're standing there ready to hail the first person to ram the piece home a hero... And then happily axe down the person pointing out that the puzzle reads 5+ years. "Why doesn't the democrats have someone to "match" Bush".. shakes head
