Praise Baby Jesus

Joe Scarborough, all 'growed up', reviews the 'controversial' film "Talladega Nights" that he refers to throughout as Talladega Fights. A mistake, or just a strange way to cast the 'fight between the humor impaired Christian prick and his other guests, I don't know. I'm not sure where Dr. Ted Baehr got his education, but last I checked neither Christians nor White Southerners were considered a race. But not one to let reason get in the way of a mighty display of ignorance Ted manages a way to link "Talladega Nights" to the holocaust. This bigot masquerading as an educated man is a testament to the effects of superstition on an uptight "white guy", a dying race I believe. Joe to his credit found the clips amusing and predicted success for the movie. I saw it over the weekend, and will admit to moments of uncontrolled laughter. I particularly enjoyed Sacha Baron Cohen, who played the French driver and 'Ricky Booby's' nemesis.

Mocking Jesus? You stupid, stupid man. Not Jesus, the MORONS that hijacked Him for their own personal greedy, bigot mascot. Joe's generally an ass but at least he can laugh at his racist, ignorant, violent heritage.

Yeah people are real pissed off about mocking the south, I mean, look at the Blue Collar comics- suffering. Most of those dopes will be like the people that think Spinal Tap was a real documentary.

Grow up and put down the lynchin' noose and burning cross Homer.

Setting a man-made law that cannot be changed is stupid, such as touting every satire of christ as "bigotry".

I mean, satire of jews in the holocaust? what is he, a frustrated 12 year old?

Is this really an issue? Living in Texas, I see all these rednecks and country-folk laughing their asses off at Larry the Cable Guy who puts on a fake accent and acts stupid. People who are proud of their own undereducation deserve to be made fun of.

Secondly, this is not bigotry, this is freedom of goddamn baby jesus speech, so deal with it. Sheesh.

Oh, and fuck baby Allah, too.

I am a redneck, if that is defined by where I was born and my accent.

Funny, I don't feel oppressed. Last time I checked, white men pretty much run the world. We're doing a bad job too.

Maybe someone else will step up and run things. I think women should get a crack at it. Speaking on behalf of all white men, we abdicate. Now someone just needs to claim power.

Just how much satire of Christ was there in this movie anyways? I mean when I saw it that was definitely not what jumped to my mind. Yes he kept referring to "lord baby Jesus", but really, is THAT considered 'poking fun at Jesus'?? I am so sick and tired of these Christians in this country so desperately trying to make themselves persecuted against in every way possible.

Well, at least Ted Baer has Oliver Stone's "The Passion of 9-11" to whack off to this summer. Am I the only one who is avoiding this movie like the fucking plague?

"Karnes is portrayed a man of determination and few words. But Stone pours on the gravitas, and gives him a speech that seems too flowery for his character. Karnes arrives at Ground Zero and proclaims that it is 'like God made a curtain with the smoke to shield us from what we're not ready to see.' I don't know if Karnes actually spoke these words or not (though it seems a peculiar thing for a rescuer to say to another rescuer when he knows his mission to go behind that 'curtain' and search for survivors), but as it's depicted in the movie it strikes a resoundingly false note. The phrase 'less is more' just isn't in Stone's directorial vocabulary."

"Karnes is introduced dressed as a civilian, watching TV like everyone else. 'I don't know if you guys realize it yet, but this country's at war,' he says, and strides out of the frame. It's clear he's decided to do something about it. Cut to a close-up of a bible, open to the book of Revelation, followed by a shot of a looming cross. This is piling it on a bit thick for a movie that otherwise emphasizes the personal over politics and religion. Stone overtly Christianizes 9/11 in ways that go beyond the beliefs of his characters. A glowing apparition of Jesus appears twice, but the first time it just comes out of nowhere, and is followed by a memory-image of McLoughlin's wife. Where is this Jesus coming from?"

movieguide.org is one of the best places for movie reviews! :)

If its marked "Abhorrant" its guaranteed to be somewhat interesting.

For example: "CLERKS II is a tasteless, vile movie with extremely crude, disgusting foul language, sexual references and bigoted, politically correct, smug, and ultimately hateful attacks on Christian conservatives."

You can't buy reviews like that!

Those darned hollywood liberals mocking white men and Jesus! No one makes fun of blacks anymore (Well, except the Wayan's Bros, Samuel L. Jackson, Bernie Mac, Dave Chapell...), women are not made fun of at all in the movie either. I mean his wife is the portrait of feminist empowerment! Allah is untouchable (except of course in South Park, Family Guy...)

For a movie critic this guy doesn't no sh!t.

For fun, if any of you want to see a trailer for my film which is almost complete and rips christianity and blindly faithful sheep a new one, feel free to check out the trailer online. I'd love to get your feedback: http://www.CULTofEDEN.com or http://www.myspace.com/cultofeden

uptight white guys a dying breed?

We wish....

The thing I found most telling was when Dr. Ted was speaking of his classes at Berkeley. He said something about them being the best and the brightest but that their papers constantly come from this perspective (Jesus mocking) and attributes that to the media they're exposed to rather than, I don't know, perhaps the fact that they are some of the best and brightest and have a capacity for thought.

"White Southern Christian Redneck" is the new Jew? Who knew? Now that I think about it, that probably makes me one of the first official "self-hating rednecks" by virtue of getting an education, dropping the accent, leaving the South and becoming an atheist libertarian.

I'd be tempted to say we should invent some conspiracy theories (Rednecks control cable TV! Think about it!) but it turns out at the moment rednecks kind of already are running everything. Why else does pretending to be one get a person elected President in this country?

The fundy takes everything so personally, he must think he's Jesus.

Why is Ted Baehr so upset? He grew up in New York, studied in Europe but somehow he has a connection to NASCAR loving Southerners? Sounds more like another nut trying to get attention and play the persecuted Christian role.

I am kinda upset that he uncovered our plans for concentration camps in the South. How did he know this movie was our first step to Southern eradication? Might as well move onto putting nerve gas in the air conditioners.

Perhaps i should go all Mel Gibson on Joe's ass and proclaim that "rednecks are responsible for all the wars in the world."

sigh this is the horrible problem plaguing american christianity. if anyone parodies or satirizes our interpretations of religious doctrine, they are said to be attacking the roots of the faith as well (i.e. jesus directly etc.) nothing could be further from the truth for most hollywood movies.

Dr. Ted and a number of other Berkeley faculty who share a bigoted mindset are a disgrace to the university.

No, no, Mr. Scarborough, Atheist are the last group that is socially acceptable to make fun of. Well, not make fun of but to call immoral, satan worshippers that kill eat babies; as some would describe us as.

Maybe he doesn't understand the concept of satire. Next he will be calling Dave Chappelles show racist or any other comedians that harp on stereotypes not only for laughs but to show the stupidity of them.

This semi goes with a conversation I had with several friends. We where hanging out, playing Halo 2, and most of them are black (I'm white.) We started talkng about stereotypes, and I asked them what ones they had on white people. They responded with watching nascar. For some odd reason they where extremely suprised that I don't watch it nor have ever seen a race nor ever wish to watch it. I don't know why, but they believed every single white person liked to watch nascar. I found that pretty funny myself.

So do I think that this will enforce that stereotype? Not at all.

Oh, and both of my parents are from Alabama, are white conservative Christians. So are my grandparents who live in Alabama, as are both my uncles who live in Texas, who are also white conservative Christians.

They all saw no problem with it, as I wanted to go see the movie with them and they wanted to as well, but we ended not having time when I visited them last week.

I am tired of people thinking that white conservative Christians are persecuted. For hells sake, you almost literally own the damn country!

sigh I could never stand watching Joe. He made me want to bust my eardrums every 10 seconds with something he said.

Actually, he wasn't too bad there. I stand corrected, I should of watched the whole clip.

hangs head in shame

Making fun of the dominant culture is not the same as making fun of making fun of weak, minority cultures. More importantly, it's not a recent phenomenon. In the Middle Ages people used to perform satirical versions of all the Catholic sacraments.

All that said, Will Farrel's characters may have something to do with Bush, people from Texas and rednecks, but they are fantastically absurd. Hateful attacks are made of sterner stuff. 95% percent of white people are not going to watch this and think 'this is an attack on me and my kind'. This is especially true since it's all put together by white people. Some people haven't noticed that Jews, blacks, Hispanics, and many other groups have loads of fun making fun of themselves. Too bad that some white people can't enjoy the same kind of thing.

You always hear that Jews, Catholics, Christians, Hispancs, etc. are the 'last group which it is permitted to ridicule'. In actualy fact just about every group gets made fun of in a variety of ways. Some of it's quite tasteless too and it still gets play. Watch Comedy Central between 11 pm and 2 am.

Don’t take it to bad southern white males. I live in California and I run into plenty of dumb shit overly aggressive white males that act just about exactly like the characters’ in this film… this is exactly and they are not kidding. The preoccupation with cars, blond women with large breasts or a total disregard of the true message of Jesus is not over represented here. This movie is NOT funny because it shows exactly what many American males are like. This characters or not overplayed. They may have crammed more truth into one film then one might see at a signal NASCAR race but surly I have heard every kind of statement in this film since 911. Is sports illustrated trying to be funny, look at all those so called fighting sports on cable is that funny all the examples of bigotry in America is that funny? No and it is not funny because it is all true that is why it is not funny! Joe Scarborough you may not be a “cracker” (ignorant southern white males) but if you find this movie funny your dim. Your only consolation is that it is the hijacking of Christianity (just as Islam has been hijacked) of Dr Teddy Baehr that is exactly what is running this country into Armageddon.

I don't like Joe S's politics much, but I sense that he is being intellectually honest and I appreciate his sense of humor.

Two other conservatives that I respect are Chuck Hagel and William F Buckley. I don't agree with anything that Buckley says, except for his view that marijuana should be legalized. However, I appreciate his manner of engaging in civilized discourse. He debates high-level opponents instead of stooping to the level of other conservatives such as Bill O'Reilly who are only willing to debate light-weight liberals. The O'Reilly types don't engage in civilized discourse, but instead resort to petty bickering to please the low-class tastes of their audience. But who ever watched Firing Line?

I think Will Farrel might actually be trying to attack the Bush and his machoness. He is the guy that has done at least two, that I know of, parodies of Bush on his Texas ranch.

I honestly don't see why this is bad, as him supposedly being the run of the mill, "I'm always right. Stay the course", normal Texas cowboy is his large appeal to a lot.

"You always hear that Jews, Catholics, Christians, Hispancs, etc. are the 'last group which it is permitted to ridicule'. In actualy fact just about every group gets made fun of in a variety of ways. I think, honestly, the only group that can be made fun of in mainstream media by people in politics or power, are atheists.

Just look at Mel Gibson. If he had been saying that about atheists, you would have heard nothing about it. But change jewish people with any other type, such as blacks, muslims, catholics, gays, etc. and you would of heard about it, most likely.

You defiantly would of heard an outcry if you replaced one of those with jews, if he said it on TV. But with atheist, there would be no such outcry.

But, atheist are not as socially restrained as others, as most do not have to tell others that they are an atheist, and you also can not tell one by just looking at them. While it is hard to hide other types of beliefs or sexual orientation or skin color, from people.

Fuck these Jesus groupies and their fucking religion. Jesus would be so ashamed of these people. How does this shit qualify for news?

"I think, honestly, the only group that can be made fun of in mainstream media by people in politics or power, are atheists." - vonmeth

Amen to that.

"Maybe someone else will step up and run things. I think women should get a crack at it."

That type of hippie, pandering bullshit statement makes my inner child want to strangle yours. The world isn't in bad shape because it's run by 'white men'. It's in bad shape because rich people end up in power, or powerful people end up rich, and the system changes them rather than the other way around.

Or do you not recall Margaret Thatcher, Imelda Marcos, or even our own pseudo-female androbot Hillary Clinton?

"We're all equal! Except when I want to make some self-mocking comment to show how enlightened I am!"

I grew up in Alabama. My father lived four houses away from the Allison family of NASCAR and stock car racing fame. My sister used to baby sit their kids.

That is by way of saying I know something about the working class south and the great love of racing.

What was very clear to me was that this movie in no way mocked Jesus or God but certainly did have a lot of fun the culture.

Anyone from that area knows the reality of the characters and believe me, they love this sort of stuff. Truly love it.

As another poster pointed out, these characters and the cultural context exist all over the united states. Welcome to the cultural reality of working and lower middle class, white America.

Being from the ranks of the red neck south, I have seen and known many, many people who were stone cold proud of their ignorance and have a strong belief in their moral and "common sense" superiority to educated eggheads.

They laugh at themselves from a position of strength, not to make a show of being enlightened.

If you check the movie stats, and they are available, you will find that this move did very well, all over the south.

In the days of my own participation in the red neck, Southern Baptist, race hating and fearing mind set I had inherited from the place, I would have loved this movie and memorized my favorite parts of the stupidest parts of the dialogue.

Damn few white working class race fans are going to feel put down by this movie.

By this guy's logic Woody Allen movies are anti-Semitic. What is with these fundamentalist psychos?

Very good point Saturnalia. While the comedic styles are almost polar opposites, there is a direct analogy between Talladega Nights and some of Woody Allen's best work.

The humor was based on exposing and exploiting cultural follies. Taking the every day reality of the specific culture and blowing specific events and character traits, out of porportion.

This gets to another disengenuous point from the fundies. What if this were poking fun at Islam? Would the reaction be different? That, in truth, would depend on who made it.

Woody Allen is a Jew and his humour worked from the inside out involving something he knew about in a personal, involved way.

Likewise, the people involved in this film know the culture and are part of the culture that they base the humor in.

Humor made from the outside, of any cultural group, is always different from the humor made from inside that same cultural group.

They're just getting warmed up for the 'War on Christmas' bullshit. When do you think it will start this year? I'm guessing with midterm elections and need to fire up the base, mid-October would be a good time to dust off that old distraction. Gibson and Falafel Guy, get it going or I'm putting you on notice!

The blithering nincompoop preacher in the Scarborough clip is merely doing his part to advance the spread of theocratic facism in America.

Make NO mistake, before long it will be illegal to criticise JEEZUS. Just wait!

Ted just doesn't get the nature of humour and satire. It's just not funny to make fun of minorities, be they numerical or social minorities. If whites, men, christians and southerners were really these poor powerless groups he thinks they are, this movie wouldn't be funny the least.

But why doesn't he just produce a movie making fun of blacks, women, muslims and notherners, if he wants to have that? Oh, wait, we have Dennis Miller and Fox News for that, my bad...
