Only In Utah

Nothing is guilty to the innocent mind. If the children where actually innocent they would see a cactus and not the finger. Incidently wheres the thumb?

"In the state of Utah we all have good family values..."

She's making this claim on behalf of more than 2,400,000 people?

That's got to be one of the dumbest "controversies" that I've seen in a long, long time. Did the home owners say that it was a middle-finger gesture? Do the neighbors have a pre-existing dispute with the home owners?

Hell, I didn't hear any mention that the media tried to contact the home owners, let alone interview them.

Seriously, this just totally made my day. I just can't stop watching it. Thank you so much.

Not that the allegedly "obscene" interpretation isn't pretty obvious, but my first impression was of a cool looking set of church windows...

It's too bad they didn't get the house owners on the interview. Or, well, anyone with a different point of view than the pack of moralists they interviewed.

What the news piece doesn't tell you is why the display is there in the first place. The neighbor at higher elevation is upset because someone actually bought the property next to his and the newly built house barely obstructs his view of the surrounding mountains. Check out this article for pictures. Boo hoo, if he didn't want anyone to build there, he should have bought the property himself. There's also some nitpicking on the height of the house being taller than code, but the builder said after landscaping, it would be within code. The guy actually lowered the level of the property, meaning there's less obstruction anyways! I say good on the guy for the "art" but it seems it's been taken down.

I think it's hilarious, and shows a remarkable sense of humor on the part of the homeowner who put it up... a much more civilized alternative to violence and neighbor-rage.

I want to hear from the people who made the cactus. If it really did start out as a dispute between neighbors, you've got to admit the cactus people are going to win either way - they get to keep their "cactus" which the neighbors have to look at each morning, or the neighbors have to spend oodles of money in their "very large legal fund"

I'd love to see a Daily Show reporter interview the sputtering neighbor. "Look, look right there!" says the sputtering neighbor. "Where? I don't see what you mean? Can you decribe it?" responds the Daily Show reporter. Hilarity ensues.

I love stories like this.

That video makes me want to flip off all the neighbors.

The thumb? Since when does a thumb show when you flip someone off? Give yourself the finger with your right hand and you will see that the vent design on the house is proportionally correct.

I actually love this story. Have read into both sides and I don't blame the homeowner for what he did. His neighbours tried to hinder the building of the house the entire way (because their view of the mountains was going to be affected), so it's not surprising there is some tension. I would do the same thing in a heartbeat.

That there is some unbiased reporting. I couldn't tell the reporter's opinion about the situation in the slightest.

Um. I'd like to give the finger to the news station please.

// That video makes me want to flip off all the neighbors //

Me too, I am sick and tired of the overly-pious puritans.

It is all in the thumb has to have the thumb to be a bird

I'm gonna get a double-set for my house! Sit and spin, baby!

The owner of the "cactus" gets ten out of ten for this not-so-subtle display of affection towards his neighbors. Not the maturest of moves, but still divinely gets the message across.

As for the neighbors, they are all children of God--they're all children in the mental sense too. They had to have the mayor intervene. Too funny.

Upon looking at the pictures--I used to live in Utah--it seems like the house barely covers mountains; the damn mountains are miles away. People are peeved because the only thing to look at on the other side is Kennecott Corperation stripping, smelting and mining the hills behing them.

This is the kind of crap we get for news here in Utah. Sure it's a funny story, but lets discuss some real issues.

Well hey....if we can burn the flag as an educational lesson, I say we can paint our own houses with a pretty blue catus slash church window style bird.

It could be could've been an upside down cross with Jesus hanging on for dear life...

he is worried about te F bomb he should go joint the islam

Norm, I'm serious: I didn't understand what it was until the people started describing it as "obscene." I showed it to my 12-year old daughter and asked her what it looked like to her. She said, "windows," and walked away.

heh. Mormons.

It sounds a lot like the avant-garde art critics who see a phallic symbol in every elongated object. This is truly a case where the innocent mind would likely see nothing but an interesting set of windows. I'm sure that some prior animosity with the neighbor is driving the interpretation.

"In the state of Utah we all have good family values..."

I'm all for family values, in the true sense of the term, but that fact that people say this with a straight face is why I probably couldn't live in Utah again.

Wow. That is... really, really distrubing. These people have twisted minds.

Attention Riverton City Council: Don't FUCK with the First Amendment!

"Norm, I'm serious: I didn't understand what it was until the people started describing it as "obscene"

"It sounds a lot like the avant-garde art critics who see a phallic symbol in every elongated object"

hmmm, I thought it was supposed to be obscene because it looks like the shape of a hand flipping someone off. :/

"This is the kind of crap we get for news here in Utah. Sure it's a funny story, but lets discuss some real issues."

What, we can only discuss real issues? We can't ever laugh?

I didn’t think a house that size needed that much “venting”. (double entendre)

Such is life in Utah. It is not so much a challenge to live here rather just our unique circumstances we Utahns deal with. This kind of venting is what makes life interesting in Utah and keeps either your blood or your caffeine boiling. (inside joke).

This Protect the Family/Children rationale usually eventually becomes a shallow excuse for being on shaky foundations (legally).

You just roll your eyes and say: “puhleeeeeeze!”. And continue with your daily routines.

What “real” issues we need to focus on: Salt Lake City hosting the Veterans and President Bush next week. Rah Rah!

If I lived in that house I would remove the cactus and put up a huge mural of a gay orgy, but I would do it in a classy, dignified manner so as not to offend the good, family-value folks of Retardistan, Utah.

ha aha ah haha aha...

My first impression was of church windows. I couldn't make out what the fuss was about. I was 1/3 of the way through the video before it occurred to me what obscene gesture they were referring to. People see what they want to see, I guess. Seems like these people want to feel offended.

This the the WTF of the week. I'm thankful I live at least one ocean removed from this suburb in Utah

This is the kind of crap we get for news here in Utah. Sure it's a funny story, but lets discuss some real issues.

If you really expect local news to tap into any real issues, you're pretty much retarded. Local news is designed to make you afraid to leave your fucking house. Also to be afraid of all black, hispanic, and basically non-white people.

a huge mural of a gay orgy,

I was thinking of a giant furry orgy myself. I'd go out every morning and masturbate to it.

Why a gay orgy?

Would it not be more offensive to have a mural depicting a Polygamist having a romp in the hay with pre-pubescent girls?

It's nice they'll fail in court, and it's a novel way to offend the community and insult it's sensibilities, but I'd rather avoid scorn than pointlessly uphold some principle. (In this case, at least.)

I don't get it, what's obscene about it? Here is Kansas we have a community upset about a flag a 12 year old bought at a Wizard of Oz store. Must be something in the drinking water.

Daily death, torture and suffering in Iraq. But these people with their "family values" find this "offensive." How truly pathetic they are.

If it's so obscene, why does this TV news clip show it without the fuzzy cloud?

I want to give that guy a high five.

Hahahah... Party house!!

-If it's so obscene, why does this TV news clip show it without the fuzzy cloud?

Hahah, that would've made this video 10x funnier.

Am I the only one who thought this was a gothic window -- until all this other weird stuff came out of nowhere?

All of this started over the neighbors being jerks about the guy building his house too tall. I think this cactus was intentional - but I also think he should have left it up. I personally find it hilarious - and I live not too far from that particular home.

Ha ha ha. get over it. i hate local news.

First off I would like to say, thank god someone else from Kansas actually has a non-ultra conservative opinion. Fred Phelps used to protest my school on a regular basis, but thats another story. I my self am an artist and sometimes something that is asthetically pleasing to you may elude to something offensive to others. I did an abstract painting once purely to get out frustration and it ended up looking like a person being sexually gratified by another person and that happened when i was just smearing paint and ink. It is all in what you want to see. There was a man who said that Ritz crackers were bad because if you connect the dots the right way it spells sex.

This is a true story, it happened in Utah and was on the news! Here’s the story. A city councilman, Mark Easton, lives in this neighborhood. He had a beautiful view of the east mountains, until a new neighbor purchased the lot below his house and built. Apparently, the new home was 18 inches higher than the ordinances would allow, so Mark Easton, mad about his lost view, went to the city to make sure they enforced the lower roof line ordinance. Mark and his new neighbor had some great arguments about this as you can imagine -not great feelings. The new neighbor had to drop the roof line - no doubt at great expense.

Recently, Mark Easton called the city and informed them that his new neighbor had installed some vents on the side of his home. Mark didn't like the look of these vents and asked the city to investigate. When they went to Mark's home to see the vent view, this is what they found...

I have to say that you folks are loopy. If your property values were decreased by unsightly nonsense like this, NO QUESTION you'd be singing different songs. They won't allow the image on TV, but it's not obscene for the neighbors??? I'll tell you straight out, we wouldn't stand for this crap in NY... Get real and grow the hell up. This man should be forced to remove this childish display, and fined for the crude disruption of peace. I hope you insensitive people are kidding about this... Maybe it's the water you've been drinking!!!

You know... I didn't realize what they were talking about till almost halfway through this video. I thought maybe there was some obscure cactus/occult symbolism that I didn't know about.

People need to calm the f-bomb down.

I hate it when people try to legislate against things they find offensive.

"How will I explain this to my grandkids? Won't someone please think of the children?!"

People see what their minds want them to see! It's like looking at clouds and imagine any sort of figures. Those who saw a "finger" have a dirty mind.
