Three Shakespeares? LOL!!! I'd believe him more if he said Cat In The Hat.

He sounds so indignant.... grin I suppose when you lie on a regular basis you have to convince yourself that you're in the right. He probably was telling the truth, just not the whole truth. He may have read parts of Shakespeare, and he may have read "The Stranger" but he almost certainly didn't think on it very long. Reminds me of the time he came from Bible camp and couldn't recall anything from the chapters he said he studied. Ah... a Preznit who'd fail a book report.... isn't that special?

Is that not the text book definition of a compulsive liar?
The one thought rattling around in my head most often when I see this shell of a man on TV is how anyone can truly support him. The guy should be in a group home for the mentally disabled, not the White House.

umm, so why is it that he only knows the cliff notes version, if that, of anything that he claims to read.

Geez... you guys act like our Commander in Cheif can't turn over a new, more literate leaf in his ripe old age! I'm sure when the Republican Party takes a political hit in November, Dostoevsky and Koestler will be by Bush's bedside.

Reminds me of a Fish Called Wanda.
Otto: "Apes don't read philosophy." Wanda: "Yes they do Otto, they just don't understand it."

why even try. what is he going to do, impress the PHD Philosophy crowd? I don't think so.
Let's face it. He should admit he is reading and re-reading Dale Earnhardt's Bio.

I wonder if he's telling the truth about those "Shakespeares". Quick, somebody: bite your thumb and see if W reacts. If he taps your phone or tries to liberate your house then we'll know he's on the level.

Do you think he'd get it if we sent him a copy of The Comedy of Errors?
Posted by: rachelB | August 30, 2006 12:17 AM | Reply to this comment
Rachel, I suspect that Comedy of Errors is probably one of the "Shakespeares" he tried to read. The title might intrigue him. It's a comedy written before Jon Stewart, it can't be harmfull to a small brain.
Would he get it? "Fool me once...uh...can't get fooled again." I don't think so.

"three shakespheres". Yea right. I've read three shakespheres because I was forced to, I can't see anyone reading it as a way to relax.

As a non-American I am most concerned by his awkward and defensive body language. He looks like a cornered, frightened child.
Cornered beings tend to desperate reactions. I really hope he doesn't do something crazy like attacking Iran.

Heh, I can agree with that Simon. Anyway, to me it seems people are a bit harsh. Other then the obvious, 'who cares about this useless trivia while there is actual NEWS occuring,' I have to sympathise with the guy. People are surprised too when I tell them I read Sarte's work, among others ("what? you!?")
C'mon, for all you know he DID read the book... and its foolish to say you know otherwise (unless you were stalking him. Then I guess its fair ground.)

I heard this this morning from a TV in another room and said out loud "Please tell me this is a comedian doing Bush." Then I went in and looked. OMFG.

you have to give it to him. I mean seriously. He is reading books that are above his reading level and way above his comprehension level.
The more important thing you should be asking him is "how can you read books with words that are SO complicated that you have to resort to phonetics?" Ill give someone a dollar if they send a clip of themselves asking the president this and getting an answer into the daily show.

Shamelessly the right wing press plays into the white houses plan to make the President look smart! The part where bush announced his plan to "keep expectations low" was left out. Obviously this site has chooses not to reveal the true genius of the president. How dare you take the words of the president out of context. PLEASE PALY THE WHOLE CLIP! LOL

To the "three Shakespeares" line, Williams (if he had any balls) should have followed up with, "Which ones?" Bush might be able to rattle off the name of three "Shakespeares" off the top of his head, but I doubt it would be easy for him.

I had to watch that twice. Bush's face starts to twich at the first mention of "reading."

Notice he dodged the question about what the book was about, and became defensive. I wonder if he actually read the book, or if this isn't just some sort of public image campaign? Shoot, I can't trust ANYTHING from this administration!

@simon Hey I read "Taming of the Shrew", "Merchant of Venice", "Macbeth", "King Lear" out of pure interest (of course, abridged versions :). I can definitely say I read them when I was relaxed not out of force.

Like Freedolin, above, I was particularly struck by the body language, breathing, and vocal tones.
This president really appears to be a 14 year old boy trapped in a man's body. Worse yet, the body he's trapped in has been made president of the US.
He's never done anything for himself. Everything he has ever had was laid on him. He has an MBA from Harvard yet never wrote a paper. How do you do that? (80Million bucks worth of architecture donated by daddy, that's how.)
I don't doubt that he read the book. Hell, I dropped out of the worst schools in Alabama. I read The Stranger when I could hardly read a newspaper. I didn't understand it until some years later but reading it was easy.
The man has no real confidence in himself. Tons of swagger and bravado. Much pretense and John Wayne style posturing, but it's all play acting.
I think he gets so defensive at these times because he is smart enough to know that he's not very smart and any scrutiny scares the hell out of him.
And this man is president of the US. The most powerful president of all time, with a vice president who has more power than any vice president has ever had.

Shakespeare is great! y'all should watch some of the plays. They aren't that advanced and they were designed for popular audiences.
When Colbert gave his speech in fron of Bush, I couldn't help but think of Hamlets play for Claudius!
