These are the kind of public speaking mistakes I made in Elementary School, presenting a project.
I believe I may be MILDLY dyslexic...
He must have never been tested.
o.O
OMG...
...shoot the messenger... please.
Call me naive, but I think he was making a subtle point... The US doesn't have a good relationship with America - you guys are about 50-50 divided, aren't you?
NonProphet:
Something like that. But even the Bush supporters know what a joke it all is.
"oh that bush, invading iraq and spying on us, what WILL he do next!"
They may not have a close relationship but they can still co-exist peacefully with fish.
So its all win, win.
U are hearing him wrong, Bush says "The United States of America" Not "The United States and America"
comon, stop being noobs.
Reporters are being generous when they call Dubya "incurious". He's not indifferent to intellectualism, he's downright hostile to it.
the us does not have a good relationship with america: morales and chaves have been elected, peru nearly elected humala, we'll see in mexico...my point is, american countries are becoming increasingly anti-american. ironically, its because of bush's insensitivity, not the 35 years of political interventions that the US has had down there. that stuff is still not widely known by the poorly educated populous of Latin America.
though, i guess mr bush wasn't speaking about that...
No body told him what "A" stands for in "USA" thats it
Yup. He's back on the sauce.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I heard him say United States "of" America, not "and" America.
Not that I'd put a slip like that past the man who said that the terrorists never stop thinking of ways to harm Americans, and neither do we.
As a Texan, I personally understand that it's very frustrating to listen to President Bush. It's a secret language we share, somewhat like a fraternity (except not everyone is rich). For the sake of the President, allow me to translate that mixed garble into what my former Governor really meant:
"The subtle ambiguities of the matter are not to be taken lightly by you, Mr. Prime Minister, or the American people. America and the United States, seemingly two unified entities, are slowly drifting apart. In essence, my nation is slowly losing context to itself, leading to a disillusionment of mind, of soul, and of passionate hearts; how such a loss of self may be retrograded, and even the very potential for such a miasma may be diminished."
Oh who am I kidding. I've seen ranches which held less crap in a twenty mile radius than that bumbling idiot.
Two fingers scotch. Rocks.
Again.
Maybe he meant the Americas, as in, all of North, Middle and South.
In spite of what the Bushistas believe, I cannot take joy in this man's malapropism, only sadness. Sadness that the most powerful man in the world once got Cs in class.
No he had a C average, so he got worse grades in some classes. At a school where entitlement programs for rich Whities got him in.
Actually, the United States "and" America, is the only word combination that comes close to making sense.
I'm from Alabama and have lived in Texas, I hear what he said as clearly as any Texan. "United States and America".
The man is on auto pilot most of the time. Quit stretching so far to cover his ignorant butt. Makes you look like him.
Which prime minister is he addressing? He might have meant to say the United States and Canada, or some other country.
It's moot. Whether he said and or of, it's still an incomplete thought; formed, in hopes to sound terse and pithy, by intellegent writers, and subsequently pushed through the bowls of the mind, and delivered to you by a glorified, monkey-man.

Actually this is what we would expect to hear from him. We became used to his mumbling meaningless words he can't remember.
First of all, "the United States OF America" makes even less sense in the context.
Second of all, he was not trying to make a "subtle" point. We're talking about a man who, by his own admission, doesn't "do nuance." And who is also mildly retarded.
He was speaking of Japan
From the White House web site: Their transcript says "and America"......I think he ment to say "and Japan".

11:33 A.M. EDT
PRESIDENT BUSH: Thank you all. Please be seated. Mr. Prime Minister, as I said on the South Lawn, we are delighted to have you here in Washington. The Prime Minister and I have got a very friendly relationship. We've just had two hours of discussions. We talked about a lot of areas of mutual concern. I've reminded the Prime Minister -- the American people, Mr. Prime Minister, over the past months that it was not always a given that the United States and America [sic] would have a close relationship. After all, 60 years we were at war -- 60 years ago we were at war, and today we talked about North Korea, and Iran, and Iraq, and trade, and energy cooperation.
the u.s. and america don't have a close relationship. the government and the people have never been so far apart in terms of 'values'.
Looks like he had another stroke.
was he talking to the canadian primeminster about north america (canada us and mexico). and their new proposed north america plan
Remember - John Kerry had worse grades than Bush at Yale.
Though I think Kerry was probably busy with other things while Bush was just plain not that bright.
Actually I agree with this obvious foible. America should mean all of North and South America, not just the United States. It was not his intention but even a broken clock is right twice a day. I still deplore Cheney's puppet.
."in denial, oblivious, dangerous........." Nancy was right.
Who here has read or seen "Being There"? Sometimes it's better to call an idiot an idiot and not read too much into things.
I don't like Bush as much as the next guy, but I definitely heard "of."
Regardless of wether he said and or of, you wouldn't really be proving anything by making GWB look like an idiot. That's like giving an example of how water is wet.
Well, not meaning to dork up the place but please understand that there is a clear legal difference between "United States" and "America." One is a federal jurisdiction, and the other is comprised of most of us, citizens of the various states. As state citizens, most of us are outside the jurisdiction of the income tax, for example - regardless of how many who volunteer to pay it. All high level federal employees and judges, such as Bush for example, are extremely cognizant of this difference.
His point is that there is a difference between the UNITED STATES and America. Look up the definitions.
The UNITED STATES is recognized as a corporation.
America is recognized as a sovereign nation.
