Gore Movie Reaching the Red States, Too
Some very good news.
Last month, Paramount Classics conducted what it called "extensive exit polling" of "Inconvenient Truth" audiences in conservative suburban markets like Plano and Irvine (Orange County), as well as Dallas and Long Island. In a successful film, 60 percent of the audience rates it "excellent" or "very good." Among the poll respondents, 92 percent rated "Truth" highly, Paramount Classics Executive Vice President of Distribution Rob Schulze said Friday.
More critical to the film's continued theatrical run: 87 percent of the respondents said they'd recommend the film to a friend; the industry average for a successful film is 47 percent, he said.
"For people who are motivated to see the film, they're saying that it is entertaining and inspirational," Schulze said. "We're very enthused about its performance and see it staying in theaters all summer." . . .
In June, as the film opened to a wider audience, 19 climate scientists who had seen the film or read the accompanying book told the Associated Press that "Truth's" depictions are accurate.

The story of the Bonobo chimps reminded me of a Orangutan savant who knew sign language
Now chimps can communicate with their lawyers.
I wish more Christians were like Mary Gordon. I'm not really familiar with her in general, but in the Moyers interview she came across as genuinely respectful of atheism and atheists, and pretty much non-crazy. Seems like we could all just get along if they were all like that.
Though the bit about "if it weren't for Jesus I'd go on a killing spree" is a bit disturbing...
That bonobo story is really cool. I've often found it irritating how closed-minded Chomsky and his loyal disciples can be when it comes to findings that seem to challenge the gospel of Nativism and Generative Grammar.
As someone who studies language learning from the perspective that it really is learned, rather than simply "triggered", this story is particularly gratifying.
i like what mary gordon has to say too, but the "i'd go on a killing spree" bit might be instructive.
it's one of the red herrings that christians often drag out to shame atheists: without god, there is no morality. of course, there are millions of morally functional atheists, so that assertion is demonstrably untrue.
but here's a christian who's prepared to admit, publicly, that the only reason she's not a homicidal maniac is a doctrinal prohibition on murder. is that a characteristic of all christians? are they all one shade of doubt away from the clock tower?
that's pretty friggin' creepy.
i mean, i know her position is much more nuanced than i'm making it out to be. but it's clear that most follower of christ - most people, really - lack the talent for self-examination that ms. gordon has.
Somehow I doubt that dubya-supporting people are seeing this movie, being bowled over by the evidence, and participating in those polls on the way out.
I would not get too excited about the reception of the Al Gore movie in those areas. They are wealthier suburbs, mostly, and they have their share of soccer Moms living in it.
Mike, what evidence do you have to back up your conclusion?
