Rummy 's Vivisection
Truth to power. Rummy gets nailed with his own words, and is forced to deny them. It's an interesting argument Rummy makes. He argues that since we prepared for chemical and biological weapons it is proof that we believed they were there. I wear my seatbelt every day not because I believe that I'll need it, but rather as a simple precaution. What preparing for WMDs proves is that we were prudent, nothing more.

I get a QuickTime logo with a question mark over it.
I have never commented on your blog, even though I check it out first thing every a.m. Thank you! Thanks for what you add to my day. I don't have cable. In fact, I don't ever watch television, so my Colbert, Stewart, Maher, and Olbermann fixes come from your site. If I didn't see these videos, I would think that our world had no hope. Because I get to see them, I'm not sure that there's hope, but at least I get a chuckle once in awhile and I know I'm not alone.
So many lemmings in that audience willing to defend Rummy, a complete dirtbag. I don't think our species has long for this world...
Why were people cheering for Rumsfield? He got caught lying.
In any other country, he would be forced to resign and issue a general apology.
Does the issue of accountability seem so foreign?
And how dare he misquote Powell who stated that he was not comfortable with several so-called claims in his UN presentation, that he had to do out of duty, not out of conviction!!!!!
The audience's reactions in this clip are just sickening. I wouldn't be surprised if there were "applause" and "boo" signs over Rummy's head.
On Countdown, Richard Wolffe pointed out that Rummy's statement that he is "not in the intelligence business" is false. The DoD has its own rather large intelligence operation. It was, in fact, the DIA that sent Colin Powell to the UN loaded with bogus intel. And yet, confronted with his mendacity, Rummy hides behind the fact that Powell believed the lies he was given by Rummy's own crew.

Thats the way to do it; now do it again; and again and again, and do it to cheney and bush and condoleeeeeeeeza too.....Speak Up!
The media gets more annoying everyday (or at least BBC). I used to read BBC but when Colbert did his speech it was a footnote on the event.
Now they reported the incident like this..

Which makes it sound like the ex-CIA guy was also heckling.
he called him "colon powell"
I think that clip makes Rumsfeld look almost reasonable.
His answers were bull shit, but he seemed to be the only one in the room that wanted to listen to the guy. It sounds like they were attempting to remove the CIA guy from the room, and Rumsfeld asked to let him stay and continue, which was completely unexpected, given the administrations ability and desire to silence opposition and avoid tough questions.
It wasn't much, but it was a small step in the right direction.
Haha, here we again see the classic south park ploy, operation get behind darky. It would be comic were it not true.
Was Ray mcGovern the only non-neocon in the audience in Atlanta?? Aggh! Maybe those present were paid to be there, rather than the other way around. Outrage is the only appropriate response that I can fathom.
That guy is my new hero.
"I'm not in the intelligence business."
- Donald Rumsfeld
True on so many levels. This one's going up on my wall.
These are a whole lot more entertaining than the old scripted Q&A's we saw before.
The thing about al-qaueda - mcgovern says that Rumsfeld claimed there was "bullet proof evidence of ties between al qaeda and iraq". But Rumsfeld's actual words where that there were "al qaeda IN iraq"
The thing at the end where Rumsfeld is using the fact that troops wore chemical suits as some kind of proof or justification. They wore the suits because Rumsfeld et al told them to!
That was interesting.
Sad, too. The guy calls Rumsfeld on his bullshit and people boo and security tries to take him out.
Like he said, "this is America?"
I really do doubt McGovern's claim that Bush and co. knew that there were no WMDs. That may not have been the real reason for war, and they surely lied about how strong the evidence was, but I don't see any evidence that they didn't believe it themselves. They may have even believed that Saddam in some comic book mad scientist narrative would give these weapons to Al-Qaida. But that's quite beside the point. The point is that they were massively stupid to believe these things, and indeed lied about how good their reasons for believing them were.
The people applauding Rumsfeld are truly, truly, evil. Either that or incredibly stupid. Take your pick.
Huh?? What did I just watch? THe questioner asks about Rumsfield's comments - he replies "I didn't lie" - and the room bursts into applause like he just shot down his opponent with bullet-proof facts? And was the preschool-ish booing really necessary?
"I really do doubt McGovern's claim that Bush and co. knew that there were no WMDs"
Dende Blogger, I am stunned that you believe this. You come across as well informed and there is so much evidence out there to the contrary.
It all depends what you mean by they knew there were no weapons. To determine with 100% assurance would require that they were able to search everywhere at one moment. It's not possible, so there would always be some doubt. Hence they didn't know with certainty. The lack of evidence in spite of inspections and intelligence made it reasonable to doubt the existence of such weapons, but that isn't knowing they didn't have weapons. If the existence of weapons was the reason to go to war you wouldn't go until you found something that would prove the point. They were reckless to proceed without meeting that minimum standard.
The cherry picking of intelligence by the White House is one indication that they did not believe their own lies.

"I'm not in the intelligence business."
Good stuff Kevin, I thought that was amazing as well...
Does that mean he is in the stupid business? Of course you do have to be intelligent to lie correctly.

I mean, sure, they wore chemical [suits], because Rumsfeld and his generals ordered them to. This proves nothing, other than they went through with this charade. The Australian troops wore no such protective covering, because they knew there were no weapons there. The Australians knew these weapons were a figment of the propaganda put out by our Defense Department, so they blithely went in there without any protective covering. So it was all a charade.
And I suppose the good news is that finally someone had a chance to ask Don Rumsfeld -- if I were in Washington, I never would have got into a session where Rumsfeld spoke. I have to give him credit that he took questions and answers. But, you know, it's really interesting that when I walked into the place, I wrangled a ticket very surreptitiously. I was met with this little blurb on Donald Rumsfeld, and as I read it, I had to chuckle. It says, “There’s going to be a question-and-answer period, but please adhere to these guidelines. Refrain from using the word ‘lie’ in relation to the war in Iraq. Do not question the secretary’s personal responsibility for torture. And please don’t discuss first use of nuclear weapons against Iran. If you violate these guidelines, you'll be immediately removed from the auditorium, flown to an undesignated prison location somewhere in Eastern Europe and tortured. Thank you for your cooperation. The World Cannot Wait.” A wonderful, wonderful group. Those were the folks that spoke up and tried to brace Donald Rumsfeld with the lies and their charges of him being -- and he is, arguably -- a war criminal. And we shouldn't shy away from saying that.
Does anyone notice that, according to Rumsfeld, while Colin Powell makes "a presentation he believed to be true" that the president merely "made a presentation"? Easily dodged, but it sounds like Rumsfeld betrays the difference between who was in the know and who wasn't.
